I am also having the problem with game crashing always at the same point. The error is a page fault that references 14f:406... thats all I remember.

I am running a P800, 356 MB, Win98 with a GeForce 32 meg graphics card. I still need to update the drivers. I will also try the uninstall/install if necessary.

The fault always appears at the same point, and in more than one resolution. (1884 is the year) This newest patch seems much better besides that, never crashed before though.

Is there any fix out there for this Win98 bug? I want to finish this game, I have the Aztecs right where I want them!!
:goodjob:

buy Windows 2000, works great :)

Windows2K does NOT run every game... if it did, they wouldn't have released WinXP. Also recomending someone spend $100 bucks or more for an "old" OS is just plain rude.

I have Win98SE and a GeForce3 card running Nvidia's Detonator XP referance drivers and Civ3 runs without a single hitch.

One thing the original poster didn't mention is WHAT drivers he is running? The ones that came with his card, referance drivers from Nvidia... which version#, etc, etc.

As I mentioned, I am currently running the latest NVidia referance drivers, and I ALSO made sure I COMPLETELY deleted the old drivers from the system AND Registry.

If you do this, you'll have no problems with Civ3 running on Win98, and you'll also save yourself spending a ton of money on an OS that won't even run every game... there's a reason Win2K was targetted at the business user and not the home/game user.

I have now updated my drivers from the Nvidia site for my GeForce 2. How do I update my registry and delete my old drivers?? I can't find where my drivers are saved even. Forgive me for being only quasi vid card literate.

Anyways, I loaded up Civ III after I rebooted and once again the game froze at the same moment. This time I got to see the message that came up a split second before it crashed. It said that pollution had occurred near Vacouver, (using Canadian mod), which was on a mountain square with the gold resource. I'm now wondering if the beautiful rocky mountain graphics I downloaded from this site are causing the crashing.

I'm going to try that next, anyone have any suggestions??

Well, that didn't work either... This is the error I'm getting.

CIVILIZATION3 caused an invalid page fault in
module CIVILIZATION3.EXE at 015f:00403046.

Its really annoying, and when it kicks me out, it leaves my system in the same res as civ III. If I try and load the game again at that point, it crashes immediately, then goes to a huge icon/font screen.

Am I the only one having this problem?? Everything was very stable before the patch!

rude?

how dare you.

Windows 2000 is the single most reliable operating system on the market today, and I have yet to find a game that I can't run on it. Windows 98 crashed at least once a day when I ran that, win 2k has frozen ONE TIME in the last EIGHT MONTHS, I'd say it's a pretty solid OS

Hi Matt,

I am running Windows 98SE as well, and after some fighting with the system I have no problems. A couple of questions:

(1) Are you running any Anti-Virus Software? I have to remove all anti-virus related things from memory (using CTRL ALT DELETE), otherwise the game CRAWLS.

(2) Is your optical drive able to read high capacity CDs? I had to reflash my CD-ROM BIOS, I'd get all sorts of page fault errors.

I also recommend getting Registry Healer (from www.tucows.com, amongst other places) to clean all those old registry references from your system! It's one of the few shareware programs I actually bought, and it works great!

Hope this doesn't sound too technical... :crazyeyes

Hey, thanks for the tip... Nope, I'm not running any anti virus, although I should probably get one...

I've never had issues with anything crashing in Win 98, except Netscape and sometimes Explorer until now. My entire system seems to be a little less stable now. Never any issues with cd drive either.

If the registry thingy doesn't do the trick, I may have to do the full reinstall, which I've been trying to avoid, too many horror stories about install wizard and CD drives not reading any more...

Thanks for the help...

Suggestion to topic poster: Try posting your question to the CFC technical support forum for Civ3. You would probably have a better chance of getting help there. Make sure next time that you are posting to the correct forum, ok? Thanks
