Wonder Elimination Thread

Downing pyramids because with the Liberty policy this is overkill. You want to delete or have your workers sleeping by the start of the Renaissance era?
I use mine as combat engineers, nothing better than having a clear field of fire on the enemy city, or roads going over that rough ground all done is super quick time.

The Pyramids are built for war and expansion!

Hey, look back through the thread it looks like Uffizi got dropped off accidentally a while back(it was never voted off, nor even voted on at all, from the look at it).

Next person to vote, add:

Uffizi- 20

to the bottom of the list (or if this hasn't been done when my time comes around again tomorrow, I'll do so).

and don't forget to bring a great prophet along, to combat convert the city you're about to take so you get "Defender" of the Faith combat bonus ;)

So you build a road up to the enemy city before you take it? I used to love doing that in Civ 2 when you could still do road spam. It made for more creative games. IMO road maintenance is too high in Civ 5 to do that though.

The strategy works very well as Inca though. It's the only civ where I would also connect my non-capital cities together with roads.

So you build a road up to the enemy city before you take it? I used to love doing that in Civ 2 when you could still do road spam. It made for more creative games. IMO road maintenance is too high in Civ 5 to do that though.
Road maintenance is 1 gold per tile? So if I make 5 road tiles it is 5gpt for a few turns, then each worker can remove 1 road tile each turn. It's less if you have the Commerce SP 'Wagon trains' (which also give +2 gold for land trade routes to other civs). Commerce is a good way to support your army. I am not sure if the road is in enemy territory who pays the cost, I only know it was affordable and cheaper than buying extra units to replace casualties. I think this would work well with CKN. Note; I only do this where the terrain is a problem and remove the unnecessary roads afterwards.

So the cost isn't really that bad, especially in the middle game. You don't have to build a road all the way from your city, you can just focus on difficult terrain then rip up the roads you don't need afterwards. Compare the cost with supporting one extra unit and those maintenance cost are pretty light.

For example I recently had a game where I was attacking a US city flanked by a mountain range with jungle 2-3 tiles deep in front of it ...oh and they had already built the great wall. I used 2 workers to first build roads into the jungle, now here is where I noticed a strange exploit. When I got next to the city the garrison jumped out to capture them and of course my ranged units killed them and I re-captured with a pikeman (possible because of the roads). With roads and the jungle cleared the city got swarmed by my ranged and melee forces (the GW had really got me angry by this point) and fell quickly thereafter. It then became a new source of gold because I quickly built lots of trading posts and on to the next city.

But the worker bait exploit is a worry, my workers were there for good reason but I can see that some players could use this to destroy ranged garrisons. In game it seems the AI does this with it's non-combat units as well, that is why you may often see workers charging towards your cities. Human players don't fall for this trick though.

Alhambra - 14

Sistine Chapel - 27

Stonehenge- 18 +1 = 19 : I have hammers for a wonder. GL, Artemis or Stonehenge ? Better gamble versus AI, panthon and many times religion, Great engineer point : Stonehenge.
Sydney Opera House - 10
Temple of Artemis - 17
Uffizi- 21

Alhambra - 14
Big Ben - 18 I don't see why everyone downvotes this. The reduced purchase costs in tandom with trade unions results in an easy mobilization of units in a domination game. And even if you aren't going for that VC, this wonder can allow for some easy setup of newer cities. Besides, not alot of AIs go for commerce so it's a fairly easy wonder to get.

So in voting it down I've taken into account the fact that you run a high risk of just losing a bunch of early hammers, something that may cripple you.

Alhambra - 14-3=11 AIs beeline to this wonder. 20% culture is not worth taking the risk; go for Notre Dame or Pisa instead. Mixing it with Brandenburg Gate is cool as you can pump out units with March at once (maybe even Blitz for Caroleans, tried it once) but it just died above... :(

Especially great in a puppet empire given the predilection puppets have towards defensive structures. Notre Dame - huge boost to happiness, descent amount to faith and few other perks. Comes with really useful tech, and in general it's placed on useful tech path (workshops :D ) . Too bad it's hard to get, so you'll need to have some planing with GE.

Oracle - it's not a terrible wonder, but it's just a free social policy and it comes at the time when you'll go for much better and more important wonders... or infrastructure for that matter, so wasting 10-15 turns on one SP isn't that worth it.
