Wonderful Projects

Our fourth term dawns and Fanatikans find ourselves at a most exciting time!

We have successfully waged a war against the evil Aztecs and driven them from our lands. We now find ourselves locked in a mighty struggle against one of the leading superpowers in the world, Japan. With the help of our allies, we hope to persevere against this daunting foe and emerge from this conflict even stronger than before.

As your newly "elected" Domestic Leader, I find myself alone in my office, wondering what great projects we should undertake to share our greatness with the rest of the world. We have successfully liberated the Great Library from the Aztecs, and we have completed construction of our Heroic Epic.

Shall we no longer pursue such goals? Shall we be content with just these two testaments to our greatness? I, for one, say with fierce conviction, "No!"

However, what great projects shall we undertake? The decisions are not easily made. Choose wisely and we shall be rewarded greatly in the eyes of our neighbors. Choose poorly, and we shall waste many, many years of blood, sweat and toil on a failed project.

So I put the question to you, the loyal citizens of Fanatika. What great project(s) shall we undertake in the near future? Let us use this venue to discuss these matter of such high import, lest we ignore this subject and forever regret not having tried.

Just to clarify...

At this time, we have the opportunity to begin construction on the following:
  • Sun Tzu's Art of War
  • Sistine Chapel
  • Palace
  • Forbidden Palace
Of course, others will likely be available soon, and we should consider the possibility of pre-building for some of those wonders as well.

Coincidentally, this thread can double as a "capitol-moving" discussion since construction of our palace in any city would constitute moving the capitol.

Normally in my games (at least the ones on monarch level) I shoot for the Sistine Chapel at all costs. However, to survive in this game we will need to continue expanding through the middle ages, and Sun Tzu's would be more valuable than I can even estimate towards this purpose.

A discussion of moving the Palace should only take place once we have at least named our next target after Japan...

SUN TZU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

of course if we can't get that... then sistine

Sun Tzu would prove to be an extremely beneficial wonder given the world as it is and our military tendencies.

However, other nations, who undoubtedly have a production advantage over our meager towns, have already begun construction of this wonder and will quite likely beat us to it. Unless, of course, our military department provides us with another Great Leader or two.... (hint, hint...)

What if we don't get Sun Tzu? What should we go for? Sistine, or when we get it, Leanardo's (which we should have some time not too long from now) Maybe...

As a militaristic nation, Sun Tzu's would be our best bet. We should get our highest production city to start work on it.

IIRC, Bremershaven has the highest production, 12 sheilds, I think. The project, I believe, would take 50 turns. Even if we do not get Sun Tzu's, these sheilds could be rolled over to another beneficial wonder.

I feel that we will build no wonders except by the acquisition of them through conquest, or by getting great leaders. Our next GL should go to building Sun Tzu if it is available.

The other civs have already been building these wonders for a while, and if we start now, I fear we will lose those shields once the inevitable cascading effect begins.

Is the military minister thinking that we will have a GL soon? Cause if there are chances that we get one, we could rush-build STAoW while the city that was constructing it could pass to Sistine or Leo's Workshop.

Sun Tzu is of course the highest priority. After that, I would really like to see us get the Sistine Chapel. It would be nice to know that when our cities hit size 11-14(and they will), cathedrals can be built with double the power, effectively putting our happiness troubles at ease for some time. Plus, it would be nice to toggle our luxuries down to 0 one day and put it toward science once the Great Library starts to cool down.

I have to agree with Bill here. Hurrying the Wonders with great leaders is the only path we should be looking at. That was our plan and we should stick to it. We need to rebuild our Military plus start on our infrastructure (libraries and temples), and now 40J wants more Settlers (which I don't think are a priority right now). We will need them, but we need other things more, now.

We don't really NEED the AoW as we get barraks for half price already. Sure it would be nice but it's not an absolute must have. The Sistine Chapel is very important to have and one of my favorites, but I think the only way we'll get it is if we take it. Hopefully, by the time Hoover Dam rolls around, we'll be big and bad enough to start building them at will. Until we are, we're going to have to do the old wing and a prayer thing.

Where the Great Wonders are concerned I agree absolutely with Bill & Cyc that we shouldn't even contemplate attempting to build them ourselves. I live in hope that we may yet get a Leader out of the current war, and if we do we should use it to rush the Sistine Chapel. Why? Because it's an incredibly powerful wonder whose effects cannot be reproduced by any other means, and will seriously bolster our culture output - making future conquests further from our Capital & FP a slightly more certain business.

Speaking of which, I will repeat my assertion (made in one of the FA discussion threads somewhere) that we should be looking at beginning the FP somewhere in our heartlands, with a view to moving the Palace further afield, preferably into one of our Japanese acquisitions.

Let me clarify my position on settler production. I don't want settlers to become the primary focus, but I don't want them ignored either. Failure to produce a steady stream of settlers is what caused the problem in the North province, and I fear that it may happen again (maybe in areas vacated by Japanese cities auto-razed during the war) if we continue to ignore their production entirely.

Are we fighting this war with Japan so that the Japanese lands can be re-settled by Babylon or Russia once the war ends? We will need settlers, not only to fill the gaps in our own lands, but also to fill in the gaps behind the Japanese frontier as our troops continue to move west.

On the idea of using Great Leaders to produce these wonders, I also agree with both you and Bill. I believe we are too far behind in the production race to catch up to the other nations. Our primary focus on Great Wonders at this time should be either FP or pre-building for a future wonder, which leads me to...

Eklektikos
Thank you for finally bringing up this topic. Now is a good time to begin discussion on location and strategies related to building the Forbidden Palace and potential relocation of our Palace. (Although, I'm not looking forward to the discussions related to redrawing our borders... ;))

As Culture Leader, I must sadly agree that we should not start any Great Wonder projects yet. We simply do not have the production capability. If we do happen to get a Greal Leader, I wiould like to se him rush Sistine, somewhere, though, for reasons given by Eklektikos.

So, is the main focus of this discussion now how best to use our next Great Leader? By this I mean hurrying the FP in a city such as Bremershaven, or hurrying the Sistene Chapel in Octavinium. Maybe Ekleknochtitlan should get the Chapel? Should we be reconsidering the Palace move? Can we regroup here ans summarize what our new or current focuses are?

I think we should build the Sistine Chapel, then the Sun Tzu's Art of War.

Let us focus on priorities.

First, there seems to be general agreement that building any wonder is impossible, and that the next GL should create the Sistine Chapel. This is a definite.

The palace conundrum, however, is more difficult. Considering war with America is likely in the future, perhaps it would be advisable to keep the capital in Bavaria, or somewhere south from that point, towards Strider's Haven or Bremershaven.

 OMG! I'm quoting myself. What a disgusting thing to do...

Anyway, thanks Naervod and Octavian X for answering my first issue of this post. Would anybody else care to discuss the relocation of the Palace or the next location to build our next Wonder (whatever that might be...)

Yes. Let us begin discussion immediately.

Please post proposals on possible locations for our capitol (even if you think it should stay where it is). Also, do the same for the Forbidden Palace.

ie. We could build the Forbidden palace in Bremershaven and then build (or rush with a Leader) the Palace in Kyoto or some other distant city.
