I'm surprised that I don't see any threads on this. I tried searching for windows 7, but couldn't because words have to be at least 3 letters to search.

I'm trying to install Civ 4 on a new Dell Studio 15 with Windows 7 (32-bit) installed.

When I run it, it always hangs at the same spot - the Init MP/Voice part of the loading process. I end up having to go into Task Manager and ending the process. It's the same whether I run the base game or BTS. Also, I've tried thing like going into Properties/Compatibility and adjusting it to XP SP2 or SP 3 or Vista compatibility mode and having it run as Admin. Nothing seems to work.

Ideas? Are people getting this to work on Windows 7?

I'm surprised that there are so many threads about Civ4 on Windows 7! :p

Well, I think this is the third thread I've seen about whether or not Civ4 works on Windows 7; and the other two were basically filled with people saying "it works fine for me, no problem at all." So let me just be the first to say ... it works fine for me, no problems at all.

Sorry I don't really know why it isn't working on your computer, but I don't think Windows 7 is the problem. By the sounds of it there is some kind of problem related to the voice chat thing... so maybe you should look for a way to disable that, either in the civ config file or by disabling/adjusting sound input in your windows settings somewhere. Sorry I don't know much about it, I'm just trying to give ideas.

That is a good idea, thanks. If anybody knows how to do that in the .ini file that would be best. I'm not sure otherwise what I would adjust. I will scan through it myself and see if anything is obvious.

Hello facesnorth,

Just an FYI for you.

It is always best to check with the software manufacturer FIRST. They will tell you if they have tested the product and the version, as well as whether or not it will work with Windows 7.
Check out the Windows 7 Compatibility site: (There you will find out about hardware and software compatibility.)

There is a pulldown from which you can choose "hardware" and "software".

There are also some great articles, instructional videos and such to help with your Windows 7 at our Springboard site:

works fine with me. I think the only games i had issues with with Windows 7 was The Witcher and World of Warcraft. In both cases, I found workarounds and/or fixes. Generally a google search with the error message will help you. Unfortunately in your case, you don't seem to have a specific error message. Is it a problem with the CD/DVD perhaps?

I think when Microsoft pops in to tell us all that it works, it must therefore work.

I think we can put this subject to bed now, no?

Edit: I've been saying this for months, John. Where's my cheque?
