workers doing nothing

Hello. I wasn't sure where to put this one.

I have automated workers doing nothing, even though a huge amount remains to be done! (only 5 or so tiles improved among 2 cities). I've googled this and while lots of people seem to have the problem, none has a solution that I've found.

I have version 1.52.

I'm suppose this Q has been asked before, but I tried to use the search facility and it didn't go :)

Aside from automating workers being a very bad idea overall (there might be exceptions, like late game railroading, where it is less terrible...)

I seem to remember, there was a bug in early versions of the game, where auto-workers would stop, because they "missed" a new tech unlocking new improvements or something.
Try to wake them up by disabling automation. Then you could re-issue the auto order, which should now get the guys moving.
Or just go ahead and improve manually, which is better anyway... :p

Well, I've just fired up a new game, with no techs discovered. Automated the worker, he's just sitting in the city. Doing nothing. At all. No improvements have been made anywhere yet.

The funny thing is, they worked fine the first time I played! (I gave up because I wasn't doing very well).

Well, with nothing researched... Can you at all build any improvements ?

i forget where within the options the setting is, but make sure you dont have it checked so workers will not change existing improvements.

You have no techs discovered, and you're REALLY gonna ask why the worker isn't doing anything?

Even with no techs discovered, there'll be two techs given at the outset. But if they're Mysticism and Fishing then these don't allow any Worker actions other than movement; Mining is only useful if there are Gems, Gold, Silver, Stone or Marble handy; Hunting allows making a Camp but only if Deer, Fur or Ivory are handy. The only base techs which do always let workers have something to work on are The Wheel (roads) and Agriculture (farms)

Are you playing as Louis, Napoleon or DeGaulle?

(sorry)
