Workers of the world, unite! [RFC RAND]

Declare on Germany and you can OB with France. :p

Not going to happen. Are you crazy?

I'll declare on France, since they don't have knights...

LOL, even in RAND they have no Iron.

P.S. Did you people know LOL is actually a Dutch word for fun?
I was surprised I first read it from non-Dutch people... LOL

I'll be brief this time.

Some pictures:

I was right in my protest over that city near Turkey. Now that city is nearly worthless unless we raze that Turkish city.

Civ4ScreenShot0118.JPG

Mongolia collapses (as I predicted), luckely we are not at war with the new Indy cities and units.

Civ4ScreenShot0119.JPG

Okay, from the beginning:

- Great Scientist in Moskva, let him wait, next Great Person in 10 turns in Kiev, probably a Great Engineer which means Golden Age for AnotherPacifist?
- Declared war on Netherlands, gift Aken to Germany.
- Traded Education for Astronomy with Arabia and get Dye from them for Deer.
- Next research: Music and then Military Tradition, because China already has it.
- Contacted Carthage (yes, they are still alive) and Mali, both are Islamic
- Building observatories in Moskva and Kiev
- Founded Caricyn on the spot Onedreamer had marked (how do you remove the sign: Next city?)
- Also, with Astronomy, Caricyn is 'class-3' city with free forge and aquaduct.
- Aken taken by France (Aix-la-Chapelle)
- Netherlands collapses, Amsterdam independent city now
- Declared war on France, take Prag in 1 turn (Praha)
- Mongolia collapses
- Mali declares war on us
- Most units are at Amsterdam now, lost 2 knights there and 2 war elephants on their way over there killed by France
- France is sending War Elephants to Praha, 2 pikemen are there along with knights and cannons that are healing
- Found another city north-west of St. Petersburg close to Vikings, they would now be easy to vassalize
- All old cities now have courthouses and the core cities have observatories

AnotherPacifist, it's up to you to capture Amsterdam, then maybe give Prag back to France for peace, because they are stronger than expected.

No, why military tradition??
- Found another city north-west of St. Petersburg close to Vikings, they would now be easy to vassalize

Or tempt them to declare war on us (and the Vikings like to do that) because it's easy pickings. (NO MORE CITIES TO BE FOUNDED!!!)

0. Alright, since everybody wants to befriend Germany, I trade for PP from them with 350 g, Education and philosophy. Our gold situation improves vastly after PP. Trade for some gold with spare resources to England, Germany and India. I switch research to RP (rifles beat curassiers any day, and it's also a boost to production). Praha is INDEFENSIBLE! I kill the 2 war elephants and maceman outside of it.
1. 1721 A French Galleon kills our caravel. 2 doubly promoted musketeers threaten Praha. I give it up to...Arabia, and our science rate is up. Our Praha veterans go towards Amsterdam (which is very strongly fortified by 5 longbowmen!).
2. 1724 Nodygrad gives us a new Great...Scientist! :( I use him to partly bulb SM (we still need our monasteries). We meet the Maya.
3. 1727 The Maya want Civil Service...uh no. Our caravel kills a French Galleon, and peace is sold to them for 220 g. (We need to shore up Amsterdam and then strike at Marseilles). We capture Amsterdam and I build a Confucian missionary in St. Petersburg to load up on a galleon together with some troops. Another great general is born. I send him to Astrakhan since the Turks are annoyed at us and our great Buryngrad is flimsily defended.
Civ4ScreenShot0497.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0498.jpg

4. 1730 France makes peace with Germany. I start Opera House in Kiev (15 size and still growing)
5. 1733 Plague spreads to England and Vikings. Sigh...it's going to be cold winter for lots of cities with just 1 unit.
6. 1736 No plague yet. Amsterdam comes out of rebellion and gives no gold?
7. 1739 The plague comes to us from the Turks to Buryngrad (which is totally nerfed by Turkish culture), which is also threatened by an indy cannon. A great engineer is born, but in view of the plague I did NOT start a GA.
8. 1742 Plague hits Moscow, Archangelsk, Kiev and Jaroslav.
9. 1745 More plague and a f@#$ing event hits us:
Civ4ScreenShot0499.jpg

10. 1748 I think our lack of foresight has doomed us to lose a city to the Germans...see their threatening stack right outside Archangelsk? I transfer some troops from Odessa to Archangelsk.
Civ4ScreenShot0500.jpg

To do:
Germany must die. If not, they WILL attack and we'll lose our UHV.
Build troops to shore up our borders (Turkey, Germany, Vikings). This is why we should have never gone fishing for Amsterdam but used our stack to hit Germany while they are at war with France. Our border with Germany is badly positioned (no chokepoints, their knights can reach our cities in 1 move so we can't even use our UP, if the AI were smart enough and overwhelm us before bombarding)
Start GA next turn (I think no more plague is spreading and we need troops fast).
RP in 3 turns, go for rifling next and upgrade some border units ASAP to riflemen.
Our stack in Amsterdam would be better off coming home, but I don't trust France. At least if Germany attacks us, we can attack them from the west.
All our espionage is spent against France. DON'T steal SM since I partly bulbed it.
Odessa and Nodygrad are undefended for the moment. Build troops!

Every civ player should know these by heart.
Especially this one (when we should have declared on Germany):
Take the opportunity to pilfer a goat (順手牽羊/顺手牵羊, Shùn shǒu qiān yáng)

While carrying out your plans be flexible enough to take advantage of any opportunity that presents itself, however small, and avail yourself of any profit, however slight.
And this one (distant state in this case was France--now we're neighbors):
Befriend a distant state while attacking a neighbour (遠交近攻/远交近攻, Yuǎn jiāo jìn gōng)

It is known that nations that border each other become enemies while nations separated by distance and obstacles make better allies. When you are the strongest in one field, your greatest threat is from the second strongest in your field, not the strongest from another field.
I think we'll have to use this one pretty soon (i.e. give up Archangelsk which seems to be their target):
If everything else fails, retreat (走為上/走为上, Zǒu wéi shàng)

If it becomes obvious that your current course of action will lead to defeat, then retreat and regroup. When your side is losing, there are only three choices remaining: surrender, compromise, or escape. Surrender is complete defeat, compromise is half defeat, but escape is not defeat. As long as you are not defeated, you still have a chance.

Umm AP, without a save I won't be able to do any of those things..

I guess the strategy discussion was pretty pointless, because in the end Nody did what he wanted and went, for example, for the absolutely useless music and MT. That's a lot of wasted science. So long communism. This military campaign also makes it harder to get the UHV, but I do agree that it is more fun this way. Also I like the challenge! :D

We will never beat China to Communism, even if I bulbed SM with the 2 great scientists because we have so many cities. It's military matters that are more concerning now.So
Sorry, here's the save:

Yep, no chance for communism, since China already has it and Nody we can't trade MT to anyone, because nearly everybody has it. If you want to trade a tech, you should go for something that nobody else has.

Anyways, my turns went by quickly, since I didn't really do anything besides building troops and banks, why some of our largest cities didn't even have them?

0. Started the GA, adjusted building orders, checked the trades and made some new ones, currently we sucking out nearly every penny that other nations can spare. Trade around for some cash. Science up to 70%
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0000.jpg

1. Barracks' builded in some cities, others build musketmen and cannons, science up to 80%

2. More units, we get RP, next rifling, I don't build knights because musketmen will be more useful, since we get rifling in 10 turns, plague is gone
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg

3. Musketmen and cannons built everywhere

4.-6. More units, I am switching to buildings, since 1gold per unit will destroy our science, I trade the almost complete world map from mayas for CS

7. Defences are now pretty much inpenetrable, no need for units anymore, we have the largest army, and pretty much everything else, cities that don't have any useful buildings to build are working on wealth and research
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

8. More buildings and couple units are completed

9. Arabia collapses, Prague flips to France, not good
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg

10. 2 turns until we get rifling, science is up 80%, unit upkeep isn't too high, but we should keep it that way, net foreign income 37, (I made one deal after the screenie)
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg

NOTES:
-The spy in aux-la-chapelle is waiting that we have enough espionage to steal something from them, that will take some time but not too long (the tech stealing cost number in the espionage screen doesn't include any bonuses!), so don't move it!
-After we steal one tech from France, all espionage should be directed towards China, those spies in Smolensk are waiting for that
-Defences are pretty good and after rifling nobody can threaten us, so no need to build units, we should focus on science

besides building troops and banks, why some of our largest cities didn't even have them?

It's not called the plague for nothing. I moved units out the turn before and then back, but then some of them will still die. St. Petersburg and Odessa I left undefended because I moved whatever I can squeeze to Archangelsk for deterring the Germans. (Vikings were pleased so I took a gamble). Nodygrad was well in the interior so it could be undefended temporarily.
If you mean some of our cities didn't have banks, it's because I was busy building markets and grocers first!
When we have rifles I would declare on Germany and vassalize them. If we let them get rifles they will be a threat.

When we have rifles I would declare on Germany and vassalize them. If we let them get rifles they will be a threat.

Okay, with rifling military tradition will be a good thing to have, because of... COSSACKS!

Also, I once read that having MT as Russia is good for stability.

Since Danger Bird is away should I pick up the save and he'll play when he gets back?

1781 (turn 1): Novgorod: Bank -> Observatory (5), Odessa: Musketman -> Library (8).
As resident of the AP I get to choose between open borders between all members and stop trading with Portugal, the former is picked as we have Mercantilism. Dropped research down to 20%, rifling still due next turn and we'll have 415g to upgrade. Traded extra wheat to Khmer for 3gpt.

1784 (turn 2): Rifling is in, started researching MT for Cossacks and possible military alliances (7), research is at 70% for a little more gold if we'll need to more some emergency upgrades. China wants Rifling and 170g for SM, no way. Spy still can't steal from the French even with 50% discount. Gave the Japanese world map for 290g for more upgrades this turn, upgraded the offensive troops (non-city defense promoted) to riflemen. I didn't notice a German knight near independent Tashkent until now so I had to whip riflemen in Novgorod.

1787 (turn 3): Great engineer is born in Azov, sent him to Moskva. Jaroslavl: Cannon -> Stable (3, for soon-to-be Cossacks).

Here's our battle plan against Germany: Two stacks coming from the east, first stack goes for Frankfurt and then to Munchen. Second stack goes to Artaxata and then to Bremen:

sg16.jpg

By the time we'll capture Munchen Germany should be willing to capitulate, and if not then Bremen and another city could be captured to ensure their vassalization. I would bring the stack in Amsterdam but the French have a lot of units in the cities nearby and we don't have open borders.

Declare war on Germany, take out knights and musketmen at our borders near Frankfurt, also declare war on independent Tashkent to remove the Germany knight, Riflemen dies at 95%, another riflemen takes him out.

1790 (turn 4): A worker is killed by an independent cannon. We rank the most powerful empire, Portugal being second and Turkey third. Carthage offers open borders and I agree. Nodygrad: Bank -> Observatory (8). Smolensk: Confu temple -> Bank (10). Rifleman takes out Independent cannon.
Frankfurt's defenses are down to 25%, Artaxata's are down to 38%.
GE arrived in Moskva, he will stay there until we really need him (GP or rush a wonder). Science is up to 80% now that we have enough gold in reserve.

1793 (turn 5): Machu Pichu (Incan) has been captured by Portugal, who also signs a defensive pact with Carthage. Frankfurt's defenses are down to 11%, Art's are down to 16%. Our riflemen can attack Frankfurt with 70% win chance but we will wait another turn for better odds. Spy still can't steal anything from Aix-la-Chappelle.

1796 (turn 6): A congress will start in 2 turns. Jaroslavl: Stable -> Knight (3, but will be changed to Cossack since MT is due in 2). Kiev: Opera House -> Stable (2). Roma was captured by Portugal (they seem to be much more militaristic than usual).

Frankfurt's defenses are down, we will attack next turn. Art's defenses are also down and we wait another turn before attacking as well.

1799 (turn 7): We don't bribe anyone. Nodygrad: Observatory -> Wealth.
Frankfurt is taken, first by 89% riflemen against longbowman and then 73% riflemen against musketman. The city is kept and we get some gold, but our research suffers and we increase science to 90% at -48gpt to keep MT arriving the next turn. The Germans also tried to send a cannon to defend Frankfurt but now it's easy pray to our rifleman.
Art is under attacked by all 3 cannons starting at 70% and then 90% but the first one dies, riflemen attack the weakened city defenders and the enemy's forces are almost destroyed. Germany will sign peace for some gold and world map but that is obviously not enough.

1802 (turn 8): World Congress of Fort-de-France: Napoleon wants Amsterdam (Russia), no. Result: yes, we agree and get our stacks back in our borders without an immediate French threat or losing the UHV, only disadvantage is losing the spiral minaret which wasn't worth an unnecessary war with France I think.
Survyavarman II wants Lahore (Indian), abstain. Result: no. Ragnar wants Luanda (Portuguese), yes. Result: yes. Tokugawa wants Kampot (Khmer), yes. Result: no. Hannibal wants Kerkouane (Portuguese), yes. Result: Yes. Ming Tai Zu wants Tashkent (Independent), no. Result: no. Suleiman wants Makkah (Independent), abstain. Result: no. Joao II wants Texcoco (Aztec), abstain. Result: no.
We get a choice between: Birag (French), Providence (English), Munchen (Germany), Bremen (Germany), Aspadana (Turkey). I ask for Bremen, result: no. (For: Hannibal, Tokugawa, Peter. Abstained: Mao Zedong (wasn't he Ming Tai Zu a moment ago?), Ragnar. Against: Survyavarman II, Napoleon, Joao II, Suleiman.)

MT is in, switch to Economics (7). Archangelsk: Bank -> Observatory (7). Kiev: Stable -> Cossack (5). Novorossijsk: Observatory -> University (8).
Artaxata is captured with no casualties, however we have some wounded troops and it'll take some time to continue our campaign against Bremen. Frankfurt's stack should be able to move in a couple of turns.
Our Mighty stack near Amsterdam approaches Koln.

1805 (turn 9): Egypt respawns and declares war on us together with Mali (who became their master). We meet Washington who is reluctant to trade.
Carycin: Bank -> Market (7). Odessa: Library -> Courthouse (10). Korinthos: Bank -> Observatory (8).
Our SoD arrives near Koln and finds it lightly defended (a great example of "Make a sound in the east, then strike in the west", which is also literally true in this situation).
Our Frankfurt stack starts marching earlier than expected since enough troops have healed already.

1808 (turn 10): Neapolis is captured by Portugal. Bombarded Koln to 31%. Mali is willing to accept peace for Buryngrad, we'll see how they feel later on.

To do: Capture Koln and Germany should capitulate, if not capture Munchen as well. Liberate all captured cities back as we don't need them. As before my turnset, our military position is very good, and now we have our UU, the cossacks. After we've got a few of them the cities currently producing them should switch to wealth. China is our greatest threat and they're in the industrial age already, I think with espionage we could cause some trouble and maybe collapse them. Don't forget to first steal a tech from the French using the spy in Aix-la-Chappelle, check every turn if we have enough espionage.
GE is sitting in Moskva and Kiev will spawn a great person next turn, 31% of him being a spy, other likely candidates are scientists or engineer at 27% each. If he is a spy send him to China and start stealing some valuable techs, the other options I'm not sure what we could do with them.
After Economics get constitution ASAP for jails, which will give stability and extra spy slots (I should've gotten it instead of economics).

Nice job Scipio!
Some of our cities should just build gold from now on.
Did somebody say we should go for domination? Turkey would be my next target.

I did!:D And that seems to be the way we are heading, but it is not too late to aim for UHV either. We should be able to get some techs by stealing soon.

So we should aim for Communism, Nationalism and Fascism. Switch to state property, nationhood and police state.
The problem with techs being so expensive is because of the number of cities. But I wouldn't liberate too many cities to Germany if we're going for domination (their land only counts for 1/2 of our percent).

Problem is that not liberating them would leave Germany in a severely weakened state. I think it'll be best to keep them as a strong vassal no matter which victory we pursue.
If we go the domination route we could benefit from their military might if we gift them the right techs, we could conquer France and maybe Portugal with their help and gift all of Europe to them. Get another vassal in Asia, maybe Turkey, and gift most of Asia to the vassal. Then we'll have to worry about Africa which should be easy to find a vassal there and Turkey could hold some land there too, and the Americas which we could give to a native american civ or vassalize America itself.

If we go for the UHV route then we'll obviously need to liberate all the conquered cities back to Germany to reduce the scientific penalty. We'll then keep them as vassals to keep France at bay, we'll only have to look for our borders with China, Turkey, and the Vikings.
