World Cup 2006 Qualification thread

No world cup for Belgium :(

Bosnia Herçegovina - Belgium 1-0

I have little to add, we don't deserve it ... a bunch of weak *******, that's what they are.

It's funny that Dutch people consider Germany as their rivals in football, because this seems to be a rather one-side feeling.

Well.. not very one sided.. It's true that we feel the rivalry bigger than them, but most Germans I know are very excited about this game as well. In 2002 they didn't make the song 'Ohne Holland fahren wir zur WM' (without Holland we go to the World Cup) for nothing, and every time there is a game some magazine pulls out the stereotypes of caravans (houses on wheels like Germans call them) and slow drivers on the left road (eventhough it's the Germans that drive slow... we're happy to finally be allowed to go over 120 km/h!)

oh ****... forgot! Holland played another **** game, but won 1-0, bringing us a bit closer to the World Cup. Later this evening Rumania gave us a big push forward as well by beating the Czech Republic 2-0 in Bucharest! Now we have a 4 point lead with 3 games to go; Andorra, Czech Republic and Macedonia. So even if we lose against the Czech Republic, and win against the other two, we win the group. Rumania has a small chance left.. if Holland wins against the Czech Republic, it might even become tight.

No World Cup for Turkey either.

Turkey - Denmark 2-2

Conceeded a goal in the stoppage time(90+3).

Turkey`s goals were brilliant. A 30 yard free-kick by Tumer and curling shot by Okan. I am glad both are Besiktas players. You should watch them. Denmark exploited Turkey`s weaknesses but this result does not do them any good.

We are in the second place but we have two away matches to Ukraine and Albania.

Denmark - Greece(or Greece - Denmark) is the key match it in the group. It is on Wednesday.

Ukraine drew Georgia away. I am happy that Sheva will play in the World Cup.

Scotland 1 - 1 Italy> Pretty good result we were winning at ahlf time so maybe we should have won. I didnt get a chance to see the game. If we beat Norway and get a home win aagainst bleerus ( would expect that.) then the last game could be interesting.

As willem said, that is hardly correct. The Netherlands are most certainly our biggest rival.

Ours too ... they sure have lots of rivals for such a puny country ;)
Although, if I'm gonna go to Germany to see some matches, I'll probably end it in the Dutch (or American) seats...

USA 2-0 Mexico

USA is on their way to Germany. :)

Who do you suspect is going to be third and fourth in the Concacaf group ?
Congrats btw, Mexico's a tough team these days.

Thank you. :)

I predict Costa Rica and Guatemala will do it, at least their teams are the best on paper. I will make what I think will be a more accurate prediction once Panama-Costa Rica is over tonight. It's 0-1 to Costa Rica just before the half.

Seeing that my country won't qualify for World Cup, ever!! I support Holland all the way, and it's good news that they are one step closer over Czech to Germany.
BTW, I suspect that Czech will be there too, just hope that we won't be draw into the same finals group, AGAIN!
On the other hand, I really wish that Ukraine will be in the finals, it'll be a big miss if a player such as Schevcenko didn't make in into World Cup.

I like games against Belgium.. it's a far, far smaller thing than playing Germany, but it's a small rivalry for sure. Usually we win anyway though.. although it must've been a while already. Last time it was 1-0 to Belgium and before that we had a lot of draws with some awesome scores like 5-5.

And thanks for supporting holland, mate ;)

We all know only once a WC was won on the other continent (apart from WCs played on neutral ground of course).

Ah, the cumulative football quiz, those were the days...

I surely hope wednesday's match v.s. Andorra is better than this crap.

On paper, I would say that Trinidad & Tobago will do it instead of Guatemala.

Indeed, 3 games remain. For Guatemala, it will be Costa Rica, Mexico and the US. For Trinidad & Tobago, it will be Costa Rica, Mexico and Panama. Knowing that Panama hasn't won a game yet, I would consider T&T as favourite for the 4th place.

I'm sorry Naervod but when I know that there will be only one team qualified between Drogba's Ivory Coast and Etoo's Cameroon, and that I know one seat is played between T&T, Bahrain, Tajikistan and Guatemala, I really believe something is screwed in the qualification slots of the FIFA World Cup. :(

Hey, our countries still have that love-hate relationship going on. We tease eachother all the time and laugh if the other one fails (yes, I laughed in 2002 :p), but at the end of the line ... you guys are our biggest rival, but it's a friendly rivalry :)

One thing though, I won't wear orange :D

yeah.. it's well said I think hehe...

I laughed in 2000... not get through the first round in your own country? And well.. in 2004 I laughed.. and in 1998.. now I'm not sure if I should laugh because it's a bit too dramatic.. losing against Bosnia? :(

It is dramatic idd. We haven't got ONE SINGLE chance this match, and blaming it on the Bosnian defensive attitude or on the bad pitch is not an option...
A 1-1 home draw against Lithuania, a late 2-1 against San Marino (a stolen victory, imagine that) and now this ... I wouldn't be surprised if we'd end up fifth ! :(

It's so painful because the cup is so close to home (Köln, Mönchen-Gladbach, ...) and I really wanted to see my country there. But no, I'll have to support the Dutch then.
I hope they get into the final and lose on penalties... they should do good, but having the Dutch win a World Cup would be extremely painful and we'd have really NOTHING to laugh about anymore ;)

wahahaha... if it gets to penalties, we don't have much of a chance anyway.. just Sweden is worse :p

But c'mon, Belgium ain't that bad.. I have thought once how it would be having a Dutch-Belgian team and stuff... but nowadays it would be mainly Dutch guys I guess. A few years ago that would've been totally different.

We're behind Lithuania and Bosnia at the moment ? How bad can you get ?
We don't have many good players ... and when we do, they always fail in the national team like f.i. Vanbuyten (ex Marseille, ex Schalke, now Hamburg), Pieroni (Auxerre) ... I think you guys should also remember Luc Nilis, a disaster in the national squad.

The basic 11 are :
GK : Proto (Anderlecht)
DL : Deschacht (Anderlecht)
DM : Kompany (Anderlecht)
DM : Van Buyten (Hamburg SV)
DR : Van den Borre (Anderlecht)
ML : Van Damme (Werder Bremen)
MC : Vanderhaeghe (Anderlecht)
MC : Simons (Feyenoord)
MR : Buffel (Rangers)
F : Mbo Mpenza (Anderlecht)
F : Pieroni (Auxerre)

Subs :
GK : Moons (Genk)
D : Deflandere (Standard Liège)
M : Goor (Anderlecht), Daerden (Genk), Geraerts (Standard Liège), Chatelle (Genk)
F : Vandenbergh (Genk), Bob Peeters (Genk), Emile Mpenza (Hamburg SV)

Note the total lack of famous player in international teams and the many players still in the Belgian league. Also note the large number of players you never even heared about ... it says enough ;)

Kompany I'd take of course... Van Buyten maybe.. Buffel is good but I think Holland has better players on the position... Van Damme would be welcome for left back; I see him as a better backup for Van Bronckhorst than De Cler.

Btw, Timmy Simons plays at PSV I think...
