I read a book about the Inquisition a few years ago, and for a group of people who claimed to be "Christian" and "loving," they sure invented a lot of horrible ways to maim and kill people.
In the future we will be able to directly stimulate the mind to create extreme unbearable torture at an intensity beyond that we currently experience, and we'll be able to keep doing it far beyond the natural human lifespan.

Feel free to read it yourself, as there are too many references to list here. But I recommend that you don't read it during or right after a meal.
