Is this the Worst Sid Meier game ever

I got enough enjoyment out of NewCol to justify buying it, IMO.

But I still think it's a weak offering from Firaxis and find their lack of followup support or community interaction to be pathetic for this day and age.

NewCol is like a fire and forget title for them, it seems. They just vomited it up for some extra cash.

Worst Sid game ever was Dinosaurs. So bad it never came out. :D

For me personally I have to say Gettysburg. Sid + Real-time = :nono:

Wow. I thought this one flat out rocked. Was a Brian Reynolds Design, though. I've never played a wargame in any theater that made me feel as much of what I imagine a real field commander must have felt. Hollering at my soldiers on the screen, begging them to hold that right flank, and watching in despair as it slowly crumbled.

Gettysburg and its followups (and the Close Combat series in WWII) are the real showcases of why "real-time strategy" is not an oxymoron.

Gettysburg wasn't a Brian Reynolds design actually. That was Sid's game. Brian was busy working on SMAC.

NO NO NO !!! Civ 3 is the worst

Man, I thought the same as you 2 weeks ago BUT I found AOD2, AND a way to win. It was not easy but possible.
I tested my strategy at low levels first, then allow me to win at Governor level, which is hard in itself because natives like war at that level... Now I just think it's the hardest game Sid made for the "easiest level".

I never played Gettysburg, but I absolutely loved the Close Combat series. The Market-Garden one was a masterpiece. If you want to know why Market-Garden didn't go so well, this game will show you what happens when your enemy has tanks and you don't.

I really liked both SimGolf and Gettysburg. I'd actual nominate Covert Action as the worse Sid game of all time. That said in the last few years it is toss up between Railroad and Spore for my most disappointing game.

Colonization was fun for a good week, trying to figure out the game. It's replay value because of the numerous bad design is my main objection.

Market-Garden was easily the best of the bunch. I still remember my paratroopers holding on to Nijmegen while the army was trying to close the gap. Intense stuff... By the end of it Nijmegen had been completely turned to rubble after so many battles and all the paratroopers were out of ammo and were forced to capitulate after the army got held up by Jagerpanthers and the like. Awesome game, thanks for reminding me

And Civ4:Col is completely broken. Once I figured out how to win I realized the mechanics just were not balanced at all. Haven't touched it since the first two weeks I had owned it.

I loved the idea of Colonization in a CIV4 suite... until I tried playing. One asumingly has to follow a strict strategy to get through even on the lowest levels. You did not need to do that in the original game. Until there's an official patch released that alows me to play COL the way I like, as with the old game, it's still shelfed. And I do not know if this is the worst since I've only played CIV and COL. CIV2 only had improvements while CIV3-4 has had good features from the earlier games removed. Naturally one can not go back due to the graphics but CIV3 is still playable. The only real downside is the completely mad level of pollution in that game... (even when playing scenarios from BC :-p)

You can try playing as the French if you want to keep native relations peaceful.

Welcome to the Forums Nai.

They took a great game in the original railroad tycoon, and made it STINK ON ICE. Col II needs some polish but the gameplay is still there. Railroads was like "here have some model trains and don't worry about a game"

Im currently giving AoD2 a try thanks to dale. But it still seems like you cant play col as it should be played. The main tactics being guns, tools and food....... and trying to get around the floored core game mechanics.

I just look forward to playing an epic game,
10+ colonies,
taking on the other european factions,
lots of trade with the natives,
producing all types of goods,
recruiting as many founding fathers as possible
buiding huge army to take on REF

or is it just me?

I'm still working on it Twinkles. :)

Baby steps, means they're the right steps. ;)

Indeed. I still believe col has great potential, and may get as addictive as the original.

I guess I just needed to vent my frustrations :)

Not at all, that is exactly the kind of game I like to play too - and am playing now.
I generally have about 10 colonies, one each producing coats, cloth, rum, cigars, tools, guns and horses with the others producing raw materials, food and silver.
When I can afford some military I do take on the other European powers to gain new colonists and restrict their growth.
I trade heavily with the natives, especially when my tax rate climbs too high.
I generally average 30 FF per game, and pick the best ones for my gameplay.
Once I declare independence I can usually call on up to 100 dragoons, supported by cannons and a few fortified soldiers in case of amphibious assault.

I play vanilla with a normal length game and standard victory conditions which means I have to finish within 300 turns, unfortunately that did trip me up in my last game (on Revolutionary) and I missed victory by just two turns.

The only change I make is that I play on an XL 60x96 tile map.

Railroads (aka Rails3) was truely awful! How could they lose all the fun bits of Rails2, and make the not-fun bits the entire game? Did they set out to make a crappy game? Did they sniff too much glue filming their model engines (used for the game graphics, eh?)
Colo2 is good, but really needs patching.
Patchware, I think, is modern game designers way of dealing with piracy. Make a game full of bugs, then require authentic copies to get the patch. Worked for Gary Grigsby's World War 2. Of course determined pirates can still get around it, but it's less likely to find a patch-hack than a hack of the origional game.

CtD means Crash To Desktop.
