Some comments:

1. Lenin's and Stalin's policies shouldn't be mixed and confused. Red terror in Civil War was horrible, but White terror didn't mean something good. Lenin tried to introduce NEP (new economic policy) which was a success, but it was stopped after Lenin's death. Lenin DID NOT lay a basis for further murders. It's only Stalin's fault. They interpreted Marxism in their own ways. In Stalin's interpretation struggle for communism allowed lots of dead bodies even in peaceful years.

2. I can't say anything new about Stalin. To understand him one must live in his epoque in this country.

3. Gorbachev and Shevarnadze (who is now President of Georgia) 'opened' the SU and were much loved by the Western countries (because their main enemy disappeared). But absolutely foolish economic policy resulted in high inflation bringing the SU close to revolution or anarchy.

4. Eltsin was politically 'dead'. GNP was falling with debts rocketing. Actually we got a new 'nomenclatura'. All the key political decisions (Kosovo etc.) were made w/out his being involved.

5. Putin really looks different on this background. But I don't like him much. Too many words and too few actions (but I think it can be said of 90% of all leaders :) )

wasnt Putin going to bring the two large intellegence and internal defence organization and re-create something as big of a modern KGB mainly to fight corruption and organised crime (such as the "RED MAFIYA"

As you know Putin worked in some of these organizations. When he came to power, everyone thought that Andropov era was returning. But it didin't happen. I don't see any significant changes in this sphere. Putin is only trying to mantain the army and to reform it by 2010.

As to Red Mafia, we only hear of that from American or European mass-media. I believe the rumors about it are far-fetched and exaggerated. There's no such an organization or a group of organization as Red Mafia.

there is not? well there is a rusian mafia, ive seen stuff on the history chanel about them almost seeling subs to the colombian cartels for drug smugling (yes it does sound james bond style)
but u are from russia........mmmh..........is the communist/socialist party still strong over there?

well look at the poll, it appears taht it is between lenin and Kruschev .........i think Kruschev was the best premier of teh CCCP ever!

Personally, I watch a lot of stuff on TV, but I am not prone to believe everything I see. :) If a Russian is involved in some crime, let say, in USA, it doesn't mean that some HORRIBLE RUSSIAN MAFIA stands behind him. I don't think that the percentage of Russian criminals is higher than those of other minorities living in USA.

About Communist party, I'd say they are still strong and they will probably account for 20-25% of votes at the next Duma or Presidential elections. It's easy to explain. The SU was a mighty and rich superpower. Russia can't overcome the painful transition to market economy and the living standard is not very high. Lots of us believe that life was better then, 20-25 years ago.

Anyway, the role of this party is declining, and their way of thinking is not 'communist-like' at all (judging by their statements).

so in to ur words do u think that a new "communist" president be elected in the next elections or win a majority?

No, no. I didn't mean that. Communist president will not be elected. No way. I just say they are still popular. As to the Parliament, other parties usually join against Communists, so Communists are left in minority.

The most foreign:D
You know why? Because she was a German princess and married Peter the 2nd and then made a revolution.
The most loving:love:
she had so-called 'favourites' she maid love with. If I'm not mistaken there were14 of them during her reign period.
The most second:king:
They call her Catherine the second by number and by importance - she was the greatest Russian Emperor after Peter the 1st

Yeltsin, undoubtedly. Russia was better off under Gorbachev and, even with the purges, red terror etc., under Stalin.

u agree bifrost? well i simply think that gorvachev's glasnot and perestroika (bad spelling) were horribly planed! bam! free speach! bam new radical stuff from one day ot another, i think he should had simply cut money in building a large military, and build more consumer goods, so taht the people were more happy, he should had given TVs to teh best workers and presents to increase the level in productivity, or at least not to have people think taht there was no point in trying harder since everyone was teh same, if he hadent kept a BIG LARGER TAHN LIFE MILITARY (a lot of tanks taht get old after a while) he should had simply made teh military a more profesional one, instead of 10 million conscripts, 1 million elite spetnaz soldiers, instead of i million nukes, 100,000 but of the highest tech, and so and so on, he could had saved lots of rubbles, oh well, i hope the chinese are not that dumb in the future (no offence to anyone who likes gorvachev and his policies)

ok bam teh iron curtain ends and waht happens? one perso comes, is up to one man to save russia..........yeltsin? w/ his shock terapy he did shocked many..........
