100% Jungle, no rivers, huge mountain range to the north with the Ottomans on the other side.

Then a little later :(

Early successes - managed through passage denial with Archers and Spearmen to secure the only Iron deposit on the island (no horses). Already my population are dying of disease from the Jungle. Is this game a no-go?

 Woah, that's pretty bad. Luckily, I've never had such an awful starting location. If I were you, I'd probably keep on playing, since I like challenges.

:rotfl:

Your only hope...mass workers and cut that jungle to ribbons! (whoever said deforestation was bad). You'll probably end up losing anyway though...

One time I was surrounded completly by jungle with absolutly no resources or luxury goods, and there were no goody huts near by. Not to mention the fact that the Greeks were right next to me. that game didn't last very long.

Depends on the difficulty.

If you're in Regent or less, it could be a winnable game - but you need to go crazy on workers :)

I see it as a challenge!
Maybe it is something for a SG? Could you specify the level, mapsize, etc?

Apolyton's demogame had almost that same start. You do have one thing going for you. An apparent monopoly on silks. A UN victory might be in store.

Just check out our Crazy Celts SG. *shudder*

If I can utilise the Iron and mass build Swordsmen I'll invade and wipe out the Otto's to the north with a bit of luck. They have much better terrain.

If that plan doesn't work I'll give it up as a bad job.

Game Info:

Large Map
9 Civs
Archipelago
Warlord
Persians
Raging Barbs (I always have barbs on raging setting)
Young world, wet & warm climate.

Currently I'm falling behind already, losing pop to disease all the time. I have 4 or five workers clearing Jungle (I only need to clear 6 tiles per city for now) everyone else is churning out units to kill the Otto's if I dont manage to monopolise that one Iron resource.

How it come you have all these icon for your worker?

I do not have as much icon at the buttom of my screen as you do!?

Jungle isn't actually not that bad, remove the jungle and you have grassland underneath... the best terrian possible.

In the preferences screen, one of the options is whether or not to have buttons for the advanced unit actions.

Isn't this also only in PTW? I could be wrong, it could be in Vanilla 1.29 as well. Haven't played Vanilla Civ3 since October.

The worst starting position I ever saw was on a tundra next to the ocean. The city never got very big, two or three, IIRC, and they were killed off pretty quickly. That sucked. It was Korea, too, and I generally have a lot of problems with them when I play them.

With Vanilla before any patches, I actually started on an island so small, it wasn't worth a second city. After an hour of every single galley sinking, I quit.

AFAIK, those buttons are only in PTW, not in vanilla Civ3...

And the worst starting position I know of was Aesons' cold world start, where he was alone on a small tundra/hills island on deity level...
He won that game, btw

i think that aeson game is probably the best known nightmare start. the fact he won on deity is just showing off.

Thats another thing, whenever I start on an island I never start there on my own even on huge maps - there is always another civ at the other end of the island without exception plus they are usually aggressive too :(

Still if I can hamstring the Otto's with my Swordies when I manage to get that Iron hooked up I should be OK at least to survive, I dont know about winning the game though.

If I ever get that Jungle cleared I will be OK. As someone else said, once cleared Jungle yields excellent lands. Thank god I chose Persia! That Industrious trait is really paying off right now.

My personal worst was a desert island (no rivers) just big enough to get 3 cities. I played until I got to mappmaking (hoping for a close landmass to settle) and found nothing. I gave up shortly after this.
