Worst Trait????

As far as the subject heading goes, I think Expansionist is the "worst" trait to have.

I just finished a conquest game as the Cartaginians on Monarch or Emporer(I forget which)...wiped the floor with the Greeks, Germans and Russians! I built the GL and ended acquiring only 2 techs that way(I kept pace w/the AI throughout the game); I missed the Sistene by 2 turns but got JS Bach's Cathedral and - when at peace - had no more than 10% to luxuries and WLTK Day in every city. The combo of Industrious and Commercial was devastating...I built an extensive infrastructure early & that allowed massive cash flow...by the industrial age I was pulling in over 1200 gpt.

I believe the reason the AI plays so poorly is that they concentrate on the military units early while neglecting their infrastructure...so they have few workers to build roads to take advantage of their commercial trait.
An aside...I found the Numedian Mercernary quite a useful unit...true they are more expensive than spearman but they are the same price as pikeman w/an additional attack point...and if you time it right a very useful GA.

I pretty much agree that expansion is at the bottom of the list. Exploring with an early warrior still gives you contacts, goody huts, and map explored.
All the other traits have plus/minus depending on the map played and the civs on it. For example: religious can be very helpful when in close proximity to other civs. Since anarchy shuts down all production, it can be a killer to have occur when you research a new government and then get hit with war while switching. Something that happens often when you have close rival civs.
I tend toward industrious, commercial, and scientific combinations for the most times. Anything that fights the killer curruption gets a high rating from me!

If you play on Deity/Sid the worst *has* to be Expansionist. On Sid I know of no-one who has popped a tech or settler from a hut...
I played this one Sid game where my neighbor expanded so fast that I could not get a warrior past him to make any other contacts. Expansionist would have saved me because scouts will not be kicked out of rival territory. On a broader level, playing a Sid or Deity pangaea game, you will have contact with all your rivals before most of the other Civs, and this "can" help you stay caught up in tech.
