Hi,

Im very new to the game but like to think im picking it up fast through good videos and general mistakes in games that i learn from.

I have palyed a few on imortal and lose bad i jumped up as won 2-3 in a row on king, i have had two games with great sea res whales pearls fish once 3 whales my instant thaught rush colossus and enjoy benifits i saved start of the game if i dont rush colossus another civ takes it, if i do then the AI rushes me with an army i cant defend any advice.

Also i would love some tactics or strats that i can try out as im just going with guts and its not always working.

Many Thanks

Bozo

If you are going to rush the Colossus, save some money to pay for defenses if they become necessary. Your scout(s) should be getting some money from discovering city states and busting up barbarian camps. You will also be getting a few gold per turn in income at the early stages. Colossus will also increase your income when it is finished. If you have linked up three whale resources, you can sell the two surplus to AI players for additional gold.

With your gold reserves you can easily buy defenses if it becomes necessary. If/when a neighboring AI player declares war, you can purchase Walls and units in the city closest to said AI player. Walls and a couple of units should be able to hold off almost any early invasion except maybe on Deity level where more units may be required for an adequate defense.

If you're going to be attacked while building an early wonder, make sure to tech Archery right after the tech you needed. If you have stone/marble around, also tech Masonry. (for the walls)

that way, while you're building the wonder, you buy archers and (only in dire circumstances) a wall.

going double scout first is sometimes the most important thing you'll do when trying for an early wonder. They'll (hopefully) go meet enough city states and AIs to be able to buy the archers.

IIRC Spearmen are at the same tech as the Colossus, and since you're rushing to Bronze Working, it should mean that you'll have Spearmen vs the rushing AI's Warriors (Spearmen are 280 gold each). Fortify 1-2 Spears on rough terrain around the capital and watch as the ******** AI throws itself on them (in addition, it means that the AI can't get to your capital due to zones of control). Just remember to focus whatever ranged fire you have (city defense, maybe a Scout-turned-Archer) on the enemy archers before they take their toll on your Spearmen. If the rush occurs before you get to Bronze Working, just do the same thing with Warriors. The trick is to just stay put and let the AI attack you on your terms. If you play it smart, you won't lose any unit while the AI will die in droves (don't be afraid to use the instant-heal promotions if you have too).

Also, Colossus isn't that good of a Wonder IMO. I'd rather just head straight to Calendar and start selling luxuries to everyone instead.

Thanks all for your msg very fast responses :) that was my plan to sell off the res, i got rushed by the time i had it, around turn 30-40 i went 2 scouts to look for gold etc however from memory 1 died to bad placement should always move one block at a time :).

I want to improve in every game i play i have been doing it on standard map and changing up who i play with i strugle to keep a simple game plan.

Example i love tech build and like getting my great sci guys, however somes games i have used them on a city for the +6 sci turn was this a bad idea as i had alot of short turn tech at the time?

That depends on when you made the Academy. Usually if its after Turn 75 or so, I'll get an instant-tech instead (unless you can pop out GSs like crazy, in which case a city with 5-6 academies is amazing, but that doesn't happen if you're not Babylon). I know there's a lot of very smart people who crunched a lot of numbers and concluded that Academies weren't worth it unless you get them really early (aka if you're Babylon).

If you have 2 whales or purles next to you're capital hell yeah it can make a lot of profit...

The early great merchant could olso be powerfull use it for a custom house and get even more money or use it on a city state early in the game that is really powerfull

It was very late :) had riflemen, so very bad idea.

another learning curve.

Colossus isn't that powerfull in late game better go for other wonders

Yeah its extra gold but you will get extra gold by market banks and stock exchange anywhays

Colossus is a little tougher because the Sailing track and the Bronze working track have no overlap. Still, if you have 2-3 luxuries and some fish the city radius it does pay off big dividends.

Thanks Seasnake that is what i was hoping however think i sacrificed too much on it and not what my AI was doing around me, i think im going to drop down a diff lvl to get practice in with tactics as if its done wrong on the hard diff i get punnished too hard :)

You shouldn't build colussus in late game, just very early. It's not worth the productiontime later on.

If build early it can be really strong however.

If I have 5 sea resources I will probably develop a Colossus strategy. This is what I've found to be the most common turn of events and why it's a pretty reasonable to go after.

The big one is the map. If it is a map that does not appear to have just about everyone starting on the coast then the fact that your on it means that you should have little, or even no competition. Also, the AI seems to go after the Great Lighthouse with much more fervor.

And with that type of city, it's not hard to ride a fast population rise which if you have decent production means you can get the Colossus out pretty fast when you shift to production mode. Just get workers developing those hammers. Pop 6 or 7 shifting to production focus is impressive.

I don't like to use the Liberty GE on the Colossus.

I wouldn't consider the colossus start worthwhile with only 2-3 sea resources. I need 4-5 for it to be worthwhile. Even then I kind of doubt the math is working out for it to be a smart build, but I like it in principle so I build it anyway if the start favors it. It's hard to imagine it actually being stronger than something like GL with its effective +3 science +1 gold and cheaper build cost in addition to the up front beakers which can potentially be quite a lot (getting civil service with it is just sick).

I know I'm in the minority, but I do also think an early Great Merchant is WAY underrated. If you have even one cutural city state nearby it pays off huge, but it works best with two:

You send your Great Merchant to one city state and use it, you'll get about 1,000 gold and a new ally, then you spend the 1,000 gold on another cultural city state and ally with it. You're then earning about 24 culture per turn, something like that, you can zip through social policies in short order.

Not to mention the extra happiness from the City State luxuries, speeding your golden age.

For best results, do as Siam or Greece.

Finally, another plug for the Colossus: It's the same tech as Statue of Zeus, my new favorite wonder! So if you have two productive cities you can build two pretty nice wonders after blitzing to bronze working. Just have at least two spearmen, one archer, and two workers as well before you start dedicating your early hammers to two wonders.

It was the 1st thing i build after getting bronze working.

Tyboy i agree with GL rush last night started a game as Babylon (King) rushed GL + fast tech and turning 1st 4 GS into acadamys great idea!! with walls and archers def. blocked in france and denyed open board they declaired war x3 times killing nothing and giving in giving me all gold they had each time, then got cannons blew them out the water going back to finnish the other civs off tonight ;)

watch as the ******** AI throws itself on them

In a recent game I was REXing dangerously and had pretty much no military units. Right after I bought up a bunch of tiles two nearby AI's declared on me, and I thought I was toast for sure--not enough cash to purchase real defenses. Literally, all I had was my initial warrior and my scout cum archer.

My warrior was exploring the map and happened to be near one of the civ's that declared. I stuck him on a hill and fortified. Soon enough the AI's huge swarm came along and started attacking my warrior. They did eventually kill him, but lost multiple units, and the survivors sat there regenerating their health for many turns.

By the time they moved along towards my cities I was well prepared.

The other AI never did show up--I think because it was already at war with someone else and had nothing left to send my way--why it declared, I have no idea, when it had nothing to attack with.
