Were you as peaceful as Neil ?

Did you put Hwacha's to good use?

Peace man :) ... Ok it was peaceful after I vassaled Mehmad/JC and Han.. Killed off Rag and Shaka and deprived Cyrus of his capital..

That was enough to trip the domination limit 1260AD. I did make good use of hwachas. Didn't realise how good they were.

I did think of going for a space victory at one point but thought Neil was spaced out enough anyway.. ;)

Thanks for the game.

Hwacha's are awsome, and have awsome animation to boot!

I built about 25 of them, and used them co conquer 55% of the map. Then went to space in 1610. Quite please with the result.

In retrospect, I could have save a couple of turns... The end game was a bit sloppy, and the final GA a bit miss-times. I can definitly cut one turn there, and almost certainly two. The only other thing that was a bit off, is that I messed up my tile count, and finished with only 58% of the land. I should have taken another two cities, which also might have cut one or two turns of the time...

Still, while these things are easy to see in retrospect, they are not trivial to get right on the fly, so overall I am rather happy with the date.

Late diplomatic victory. Was peaceful, mostly. Early on I walled Cyrus with my cultural borders, which grew thanks to the religions I invented in different cities. Didn't choose a state religion for a while, getting all those +5:culture:s from the holy cities (Cap. city was double holy getting +10:culture: from the first two religions, more later on with shrines). Cyrus lost his 3rd city eventually when it flipped, leaving him stranded with only 2. I finally gave open borders after settling all available land close by.

Ragnar and Caesar prepared for war so I built some cavalry just in case but Ragnar attacked puny Cyrus instead. And failed to conquer anything. Caesar and later Shaka declared on Ragnar, Zulus razed one of his cities, and finally peaceful Neil had to conquer the Viking cities to spare the people from evil and extinction. Nothing else worth mentioning. By the end, everyone was hindu, except that Ottomans switched to free religion just prior to the UN vote for diplomatic victory. Not surprisingly they lost the vote.
Maybe I get a shield for lowest scoring diplomatic game.
I knew "Sleep is for the weak" bit I didn't know it causes cancer as well:lol:

Sloppy diplo win in 1560, but hey, Neil's a bit sloppy also. :mischief: Conquered Cyrus and JC, took hindu when I noticed that Ragnar, Shaka and Hannibal were hindus and Mehmed a jew and biggest AI at that. Libbed Radio, but no luck with generating a GE. UN took like 34 turns to build when I started it, ouch. Oh well, a great win for Neil anyway, he's pleased to be liked by the rough guys.

The Hwachas won out over peace. It took me a while to get them rolling though. Watching the replay at the end, I was surprised to see I didn't start a war until 125 BC. Cyrus was up to like 6 cities by then, and I had only settled 4, so I ended up growing to 10 cities over the next 20 turns or so. I had founded Buddhism, and practically everyone adopted it in the early game, so I had lots of friends to backstab. I decided to leave Caesar where has was and take out Ragnar. The hwachas were starting to be less effective, but I got some Maces going with them.

I started conquering Hannibal in the NW corner, but I noticed halfway through that the Ottomans had also DoW'd Hannibal. I built a stack of new recruits to the east and pulled out most of the veterans to attack Mehmed from the west. Maces were upgraded to Grens right around then, and I went for Mil Tradition to get into the endgame. Once the Cavs started pouring out of the homeland it was only a matter of time. There was a surprise toward the end when Caesar DoW'd me. He didn't even have a stack ready to go. Maybe that means one of the others bribed him? Anyway that opened up a new front that was closer to home. I took four of his cities before I tripped the Dom limit in 1760.

So far, all the submissions seem to be from the upper echelons of the GOTM crowd. I hope others are just taking a little longer, because I really don't want to get a shield for the highest scoring game I've ever played.

So, I lost via conquest (AI captured my last city), so how am I supposed to submit it? I didn't think they were going to get me on that specific turn, so I didn't save it. It happened in 1740 AD and my last autosave was 1730 AD.

I reloaded the autosave to replay through to save it before 1740 AD but things didn't happen the same. I'm at 1760 AD and the AI still has not attacked my last city.

So what should I do to submit? I guess it's not a big deal since I lost but I played through it so I figured I'd submit. Should I just submit the 1730 AD save? Or should I play through the "second time" until they finally take the city?

Submit the save before you were conquered. The submission page is supposed to make this clear.

Goal: Fastest Diplo.
nocho's sloppy is my Best.

Libbed Radio [in 1300], but no luck with generating a GE [didn't really try, Shaka built Pyramids and Mehmed built HG]. UN took like forever to build when I started it, ouch.
Conquered JC first, and then Cyrus.

Ragnar vassalled to Mehmed early in the game. Mehmed was the leader and I focused on teching after conquering Persia.
Caesar has another city in the west somewhere. When I got paper and saw that taking it would get me Silver and Gold, I decided to capture it before taking on Ragnar & Mehmed. Then traded for Gold and popped a silver mine just before capturing it.
There was also a pair of horse archers wandering around on the east edge that delayed my Declaration.
Once I had Radio, it was time to go back to war. Hwachas were still great and good enough for Ragnar. I simultaneously attacked Ragnar (his NE and E) and Mehmed (far W from Carib and E) with four armies. Trades got me Engineering and Guilds so I had Trebs and Knights for Ottomans.

Mehmed, Shaka, Ragnar and Neil were all Buddhist.
Shaka was my best buddy the whole game. But it took so long to build the UN, I conquered all of Vikings and Ottomans.

1130, Silver Pops
How sad - I am about to attack my Buddies
1500, UN almost complete, being built in city in NE corner. I ran one golden age when I started the UN.
1515, Mehmed down to one wounded unit and he becomes Hannibal's vassal. So, instead of peacefully waiting for votes to be taken, last few turns I took 3 Carthaginian cities.

Haha, well as I also had to build the UN like forever, I assumed it could be won a lot quicker, this being noble and all. :)

So you got exactly the same date? You conquered more so I guess you'll edge me out on score. :)

...the final GA a bit miss-times.
I hate when that happens, I had 7 turns left of mine

1695 Space victory for 95k points

I had 63.61% land towards the end, so gifted Shaka one city. :mischief:

One thing puzzles me, I was only able to build the Space Elevator in my two southernmost cities (6 and 9 tiles from the southern edge). I thought we were supposed to build it close to the equator.

That's the Great Plains map. It's really north of equator so only the south of that area is within that 30 degree area of equator. Not sure how many tiles from the south it is but that's about where the 30th parallel goes.
I remember wondering why some Gotm map doesn't allow the elevator to be built, feeling :wallbash: :gripe::badcomp:because the map was modified from GPlains map which I had overlooked.

Yup.

WOTM55 we had a three way Diplomatic tie: zamint3, deckhand, Jastrow.
This is what kcd_swede said when I whined about not getting the fastest award:
The xOTM's use score as tie-breaker, unlike the sgotm's... so no, sorry, figure out how to shave another turn off your victory if you want that.:p)
Well, I didn't shave any turns off; but I did figure out how to get a higher score (Diplomation > Permanent Alliance).

I didn't finish WOM56 (and I created it, so not eligible...)

I'm pretty pleased with myself that I can get the same dates as some of the best players. And I am amazed that same dates occur this frequently when there are so few entries. I hope our date holds up (three more days).

I haven't really had time to play Civ for some time now, but this being noble and great plains I decided to try a quick play.

Plan:

Settle -> Agri+AH -> find horses and claim them -> HBR/archery -> spam horse archers -> spam some more -> Horse archer rampage -> Profit.

Result:
Conquest 125 AD. Game time slightly less than 3 hours. I wouldn't be surprised if someone got a BC victory.

Thanks for the game.

Just catching up on my threads.... and nocho has absolutely nailed me.

I cannot deny the obvious

But everyone puts up with me because I deliver...usually...sometimes only after some prompting. :D

Hey, I was referring to your alter ego, not to you! (Though only you know why you associate yourself with the other Neil :mischief:).

I have nothing but praise for all of you of the gotm staff.
