Would you give your employer your facebook password if asked?

A friend of mind was just telling me how she was interviewing at a firm, the interview was going well, they were hitting it off, when the employer said, "Alright, now if you could just give me your facebook password then we can finish up after that."

She ended up telling them she wasn't comfortable giving the password but that she would login and show them her facebook page if that's what they wanted. They were alright with that and she logged in and the employer scrolled to it giving a cursory glance to the page. Presumably looking for the tit shots.

Would you have given it? I don't think so. I have nothing at all incrimination on FB, but I'm one of this giant dicks that has this whole 'I stand on principle thing' So I would probably turn it down. Of course that's easy for me to say, I'm not desperate for a job.

In related news, a CISPA amendment that would have banned the aforementioned failed:

No to password, no to access. Of course, I don't even have a facebook account so I'd probably not be believed on that and not hired anyway.

If you use facebook, you should have two-factor authentication enabled, so anyone with your password wouldn't be able to log in anyway: https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150172618258920

If I was asked for any passwords for anything, that would be the immediate end of my involvement with that company.

Aren't you old as hell? They'd probably believe you.

Or just say that you don't have a Facebook account on advice of your lawyer.

Because telling a law firm that you're involved in a lawsuit is a good idea?

I dont use facebook, I use 4.Chan so Iam safe.

I'd wonder how I would give them a password that doesn't exist.

Not a chance. Although I'm of the opinion that that I don't have much on Facebook I don't mind people seeing, so I'm pretty sure most of my stuff is public anyway.

no?

how can they ask for password?

Some employers make it a condition of employment. Last I heard about it various states were trying to pass state laws prohibiting being able to do it.

I'd log in as a one time courtesy for a good enough position.

Yeahhhh.. no.

I would assume that it's a joke and laugh. It's against facebook's ender user license agreement and it would open up whoever was interviewing you up to lawsuits, because as soon as they get your facebook login and password they can look up your sexual orientation, religion, and other things like that. That means that if they don't hire you, you could take them to court and cause them a hell of a headache if you wanted to.

I'd probably just show them my buttcrack though, because if they really want to invade my privacy like that, they might as well see it.

"Thank you for this opportunity but I think we're finished here." get up and walk out.
