It's just that I'm, in the opinion of just about anyone I know offline, highly intelligent, and was teased (well, "mobbed" is a more accurate term) at school, and am having little luck with the opposite sex.

I'd say this is true for Junior High only. In high school people are a lot more tolerant. Well, that was my experience, at least

But as far as the opposite sex is concerned, I entirely agree with you, and for two reasons :
- beautiful girls are usually used to have what they want simply by their looks, and so, usually, are rather dumb and vain, thus are ininteresting for intelligent boys
- ugly girls are, well, ugly.
So my advise : settle for the rather-nice-looking girls, who are usually really smart, because they know the only way they can beat beautiful girls is with their wits.
(NB : this is ironic, of course. Ah, yes, a smiley will do the trick : :) )

I wouldn't know about the US.
Sorry. Guess I watched too many youth-oriented Hollywood movies back then. Thus the stereotypes. :(

I was also above the crowd then, and received my share of grief at first, but quickly turned the tables around by 1) fighting back against the most obnoxious ones thru low-down dirty means  thus gaining respect and 2) Befriending the rest, occasionally helping them out of trouble (and sometimes INTO trouble. :mischief: ) As for the girls, well I wasn't doing that bad either. I was unique. A kid with good grades hanging out with the bad boys. Plus I've always had quite a sense of humor. ;)

I'd definitely rather be stupid. All the socialists will still take care of me.

I was being literal - I do not know about the US situation on account of never having been there.

I never gained any respect for beating up mobsters. May have related to refusing to obey the "honour code" prevalent among the boys at my schools. For instance, if someone attacked a friend of mine, I'd leap in to defend my friend, which was not acceptable according to the code. (OTOH, it was perfectly acceptable to maul the offender after he'd finished beating the crap out of your friends. What kind of idiots invent these things?)

What kind of "honour code" is that? Obviously our worlds are totally different. Here the buddies that you fought back-to-back with during high school basketball rumbles, or the guys who stuck by you during a bar brawl (thus earning you all a night in a police holding cell) end up, 20 years down the line, your lifelong friends and occasional business partners.
