Lets say Califonia actually were to leave the Union, would it be a viable country? What would the effect be on the rest of the nation? I think they might actually be willing to go along with this actually... What would the seat of government be? Hollywood?

Btw, help me get out the vote. I'll be sending 50 PMs a day urging people to do whatever I believe in! HELP>>>Get out the vote!

Last time states tried to secede after a Republican won the elections, the result was not so good for them.

Yes, but the rest of the country was against it that go round.

Are we? Might be Cali would be stranger alone.

Being from Oregon I might just end up in the bowl of granola as well. Get the pink and lavender passport. My help my kids immigration, so I'm all for it.

It's always been tempting.

Ya that's right Hygro, and I'm thinking, being originally from Jersey, that the rest of the country might get on board with this.

As pointed out, Dixiexit didn't work.
Neither did the Palmexit during President Jackson. Rick Perry was unable to pull off a Texit, although he did thwart Obama's planning invasion.

A Calexit would be an economic boon for California. It sends much more in taxes to Washington than it gets back in services.

Someone suggested a pullout of the entire West Coast. :smoke: That'd be great in that "Pacifica" [?] would cut the rest of the US off from Asia, and we could charge tariffs on goods crossing our territory. Hawaii would feel compelled to join us, and we'd have the entire Pacific fleet. We could make Alaska a protectorate, so we could exploit their oil but keep those yahoos from voting.

California has just voted to legalize recreation use for marijuana. That's good because if Calexit leads to disaster, no one will even care. :smoke:

Hollywood is not good for the new capital. The parking there is bad enough already. I suggests building it adjacent to Disneyland in Anaheim. We could call it LaLaLand.

Alaska wouldn't leave I'm sure, but yes I think Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii would vote to leave along with Cali.

I wouldn't if I were a Californian, although I would vote to secede from the Philippines if I were Californian and California were part of the Philippines. Donald Trump is dangerous, but at this point it's premature to say that California's way of life will materially change. However, Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines has defended assassination and committed extrajudicial killings, so if the question were seceding with him as President, then yes, I would support it.

If this did happen and Hollywood became the capital, I'd probably immigrate to the United States. Wouldn't if it remained Sacramento though.

Would California be ok financially as in independent state? Yes. California "GDP" is somewhere in the 2TN range iirc which puts it somewhere around what Italy does. Should California do it? No. For one it's illegal to do so. For two the Democratic Party and therefore America would be even more fudged than it already is without California's 55 electoral votes, and for three it's a pretty weak move, dude. What coward cuts and runs the instant things get tough? That ain't American, and it ain't Californian neither.

Did you watch the vid Owen? I include audiovisual aids for a reason ya know. :)

The majority of Americans voted for Hillary, lots of folks would be moving either way. There would be loads of support.

Oregon is already working on a ballot initiative, so California won't be going alone.

The comparison to the southern secession is interesting, but it breaks down at the stupidity level. The north needed the lock on southern cotton that a united country gave them. They knew it, so they wouldn't let go. California is the economic engine that provides the wealth that keeps the dim and destitute afloat, but the dim and destitute are stupid and don't understand reality. They can easily be manipulated into "better off without you, so go." The only problem will be that when the RSA (Remaining States of America) realize that letting 10% of the population leave with 20% of GDP was a really stupid play they will likely go to war after the fact.

Zkrib, I doubt the Pacific fleet would go, although it would lose its bases in the Pacific except for any in Alaska and Guam and other islands excepting Hawaii. The military voted overwhelmingly for Trump. Alaska vote for Trump by the same margin aprox that Cali voted for Clinton. Likely the US military would quickly expand bases in Alaska and Guam. Guam is expanding anyway...

There would be a base lease agreement. Almost a certainty. How long it would last might be a question.

I seem to recall that it's going to leave anyway, some day. Some little issue called "plate tectonics"... :coffee:

Wouldn't it be more viable if it took the rest of the pacific coast states? It would then have a border to Canada too.
Why on earth would we want a border with California?
