Wow....plus SMAC mod reborn!

This sounds like an exciting mod. Just as long as I can plant trees again I'll be pleased.

Any plans to throw in some scripts about the planet fighting back? I loved that part of the story of how the planet became sentient.

Yes, I'm sure planting trees will just be one of the improvements that you can use to help/hurt planet.

Right now, unit production and combat is a priority, but there is already talk about how Planet will work. Suffice to say, we will hope to make room for those who want to befriend Planet and milk that relationship for all it's worth.

So, when are we seeing the animated Deirdre? :groucho:

Re: the tech tree, something I liked in SMAC was the option for randomized research. It just feels appropriate that you can't decide exactly what you'll discover next. Helps the AI a bit too. :)

We're casting for the actress to model for her right now. :)

Blind research, :hmm: I don't think we've discussed that yet. Has anyone done anything similar with Civ4 yet?

You cast for Diedre, I'll cast Santiago :mischief:

I, for one, was not a fan of blind research. I don't think it would be too difficult to create, however, and could probably be put in as an option.

I never used blind research unless I was getting :gasp: bored with SMAC and needed a change, but as an option it would be nice to expand replayability.

I don't think anyone has created anything like Blind Research yet. I asked about it earlier and didn't get much response. I've looked at the SDK and I don't think it would be too difficult for a seasoned Modder to do (I'm not a seasoned Modder:mischief: )
I was thinking about trying to create this option by looking for the 4 or 5 'cheapest' techs to research and having one randomly chosen (for both the AI and the human player). If I do try to create this I'll keep you posted. I love the idea of an Alpha Centauri Mod! And of course, if someone else does this first, please let me know :D

Well, what's interesting is that "blind research" wasn't altogether blind. You could choose one of the four "types" of research (Explore, Discover, Build, and Conquer). The research tended to go in the direction you chose.

Another thing; is raising/lowering sea levels at all possible with the Civ4 engine?

It is, and way back when I was messing around with it with a SMAC mod in mind, but there are some problems with it.

One of which I noted in this thread. (The RIGHT picture is "before" the LEFT is "after", strangely enough)

It seems that when you remove a land tile through python (because the water level "rose above" it), the water won't continue to "creep" in, but just stay on the border of the tile. Save that game and reload it, and the water does continue in.

To emulate "blind research" could one turn control of picking the next research over to the current AI scripts, with the leader personality input replaced by choosable research "types"

I always liked that option, made me feel more like I really was stuck on a world I had very little control over. And it got too easy when I could select research goals myself.

Blind research would definitely make you fill out the Flavor tags more carefully in the TechInfos XML. As it is you can type in a 10 value for one flavor and omit the rest.

I would imagine you'd just need a 'blind research' method that just uses the soren random number generator and then spits out a result based on the available techs to be researched whenever the 'blind research' option has been turned on. They could be seperated based on their type the way the great people select their techs when bulbing (or something).

I don't think I even understood it, I just liked building a huge mountain, no real strategy involved ;P

There is strategy - Humid air coming from the oceans when hits mountaind makes rain falls much more offten - and when it pass mountain is dry. It's why the tybet and further north terrains are very dry - and in northern india near Himalaya Mountains they are one of the biggest rain falls in the world. This strategy was also in SMAC - rising land to high - makes the neighbor is getting dry - so this kind of inciddent (making it without permission) even could start war

I always raised my own terrain to increase the output of solar collectors as well. That and creating a land bridge to an enemy city for quick conquest.

Although I have never played Alpha Centauri, and therefore don't have much to contribute to this discussion, what I have read so far seems promising. Any idea when a playable version will be available?
