Wow....plus SMAC mod reborn!

Is there any place to take a closer look at the current status, just to get an idea how things go?

Didn't I just do that? :o Or do you mean I can ask, but probably won't get an answer?

Anyway, so, what's the current status? What works, and what is being worked on currently?

We're still very much in the planning stages. Lots of good ideas are being thrown around as we slowly add substance to the mod. I'd hate to guess on any timeframe.

I already see this is progressing better than Apolyton's C4:AC mod, even if this is still only in planning.

If this project needs hosting of any kind (for anything, even development-related), I'd be glad to provide it at no cost.

remember the next expansion will have expanded events! we might need to wait for then to really flesh out the system

Well, the "basic event" I believe was in reference to our current leadership transferal process, not actual in-game events. After a few months of my pseudo-rule, I'm stepping down to concentrate on programming while others are stepping up in leading various teams. Wodan will be team leader, which is good, because he's got tons of real world experience

When you have finished the prototype and the basics, will you evolve the mod? Throw in a few new ideas fitting the SMAC universe, perhaps?

Well, the "prototype and basics" are already evolving from SMAC. The mod is not going to be a clone, we're taking the best of the worlds and adding some more. So, while I guess that yes when the basics such as the terrain, units, buildings, etc. are completed we might look into more evolutionarily-speaking game rules.

I read a few pages of this thread. Just what is SMAC? I got that its a sci-fi mod, but thats about it.

SMAC was what Sid (and company) did when he left his original company and went off on his own. It was a civilization-like game that was basically set "after the people of earth got to Alpha Centauri".

SMAC was non-historical and contained signfiicant plot elements that explained the strange world you ended up on. They put in the kitchen sink in many cases, and would add features even if they knew the AI couldn't exploit them at all effectively, so long as it made the game interesting. After all, you can always ramp up the AI's ability to cheat to deal with that kind of tactical hole. ;)

So you had planet-busters that changed the terrain, significant terraforming, spies that bought cities, water cities, space satalites that sent resources down to your planet.

The AI was set up to "role play" their faction in a reasonably convincing manner -- it was set up so that you knew why you where at war with a faction: because of ideological differences, not because of blind grasping for power.

Because it was set on an alien world with future technology, a lot of the suspension of disbelief problems go away: your leaders do live for centuries, because you have the technology.
