Wow....plus SMAC mod reborn!

I thought it was possible, but IIRC it won't happen for *most* units in the smac mod.

Sorry in advance if this was already discussed in the last 13 pages, but have you guys found a way to make the units modular? Like adding weapons, armor, etc, like SMAC does?

There won't be a workshop per se, but I was at one point making parts that basically 'snapped' together. I need to get back to that.

The units will hopefully be uniformly shaped so that successive armor upgrades or weapon additions will simply use the same base art, but have these new pieces attached. Reactors too.

Check back 2-4 pages for some prototype pics.

Amazing... simply amazing.

Thanks Grave. A long way from being implemented though. Citysets for the original 7 are about done so I'll get back into unit mode now.

Yeah, but you don't want to rush a good thing, though. With the new expansinon pack around the bend, you guys probably would end up reworking some things anyway. This looks like it'll be well worth the wait.

But keep up the good work, I'm gonna keep an eye on this.

For you, Grave, and for others a little preview of specialists :

These are ones which don't make the cut but they are representative of what you'll see in the city screen.

I thought the upper right one was the engineer?
(and what doesn't make the cut can be proposed in SotM, you know ;) )

A quick screenshot of a Former in action. It has 6 animations right now.

Here's what I'm hoping will work as far as snap together Unit parts.

In this screenshot is a 6-4-3-1 Missile Foil equipped with a Fission reactor and Plasma Steel armor. The chassis, armor, weapon, reactor, and foil "tube" are all individual pieces that can be put together. Additional reactors, weapons, armor types, and misc items can also be attached to create new units.

Woodelf, that's pretty cool :)

Doesn't Plasma Steel have a defense rating of 3 and not 4 though? (ok, 6-3-4 you meant. I get it).

.... wow, that's a rather big thing isn't it: Is the combat engine going to be one strength like Civ4 or back to the old Attack/Defense/Movement system that you've (kinda) hinted at with the missle foil stats?

I don't know if we're going att/def/mov or not, but that's what the stats were in SMAC in my workshop screenie. :)

Yeah, 6-3-4 is the right label, thanks.

This looks cool, can't wait for a version to play!

I remember apolyton guys got bogged down doing the workshop and that was one of the reasons that lots of people dropped out as they saw no progress. Perhaps its better to do that last?

This isn't a workshop at all in the SMAC sense. We're going to go with a set number of choices with all (or most) possible permutations. I merely have to make all of the pieces, fit them together, export the nifs, and put them into folders. Merely might be too light of a word, but it's going. :)

So are you kindof like doing it so that when you get Air Superiority (for instance), you get like 20 versions of the Needlejet but require the other techs (like Fission, Synthetic thingy, etc) in order to build the different permutations of the needlejet - much like Archery being required for all archery units right on up to Crossbowmen?
