Yet another hin at CIV VI being released this year

Oh boy, I sure hope these rumors end up being true. I'll be very disappoint if they are investing in another BE expansion.

we might not like it but Civ:BE was 2014, Civ:BERT was 2015 and if Firaxis follows the 2 expansions per civ game rule then its Civ:BE??? 2016

Due to the sci fi nature of civ:be, no reason we can't have a 2nd expansion and Civ6 but it is highly doubtful.

I consider BE to be an expansion of Civ itself.

I think be and bert sold pretty badly. Its possible a second expansion wont ever happend. Or wasnt ever plannee.

Also, i would have thought an expansion to be already announced

I would love to know just how many units of each were shifted. They may have sold badly in terms of projected units sold but they may have still been profitable.

I do also agree that I would have also expected a 2nd expansion to have been announced or failing that, talk about 'a big patch, coming soon', I mean the rhetoric was that Civ:BE was going to be a franchise! Well it might of had a rocky start but look at Sonic or Mario, they don't always hit home runs but if you are in it for the long haul you don't make 1 expansion and then just give up.

Who knows, maybe lightning struck with Civ5. I find myself becoming less enthusiastic about Civ6 the more I look back at Civ:BE.

Unless in Civ6 the aliens from Civ:BE invade during the information era. Even if the base game of Civ6 turned out to be a huge stinking lemon, I would give huge brownie points for having aliens invade

Oh I'm sure they made profits. I mean it isn't like there was as much invested as a completely new project; the bones were already in place, they just had to flesh it out with a new space theme.

I am bias, but I don't know why they would bother with a second. They know how much Civ 6 will sell just off the name alone. As for a second BE expansion, probably not so much. Even around here with the most hardcore fans, it gets lukewarm reception. A lot of us not even picking up the expansion.

Maybe they have some people working on a Civ 6 engine, and others working on BE expansion since Civ 6 isn't ready. You don't need the same people working on both. I'm not a programmer, but I at least know there is a difference between an artist working on new images for an expansion and a coder putting together a new game engine.

My guess what happened:

2nd BE expansion was always planned for 2016.
Civ VI always planned for 2017.

Because of awful BERT sales, they scrap 2nd expansion of BE. So no 2016 release.
They want to make sure Civ VI gets a great reception, so keep planned release date of 2017.

I wouldnt mind a 2017 release, though i would be disappointed, but i want to know about it. I hate being in the dark. Firaxis needs to spill the beans

Are Firaxis working on Civ 6 at this point I would be more than surprised if they weren't, the good question is will it be this year or next that is an open question. I honestly doubt BE has impacted on Civ 6 in any meaningful way, X-Com 2 however, given how successful it was could be diverting resources.

Will we get more BE, also an open question, it will depend if it is profitable for 2K, it is clear there is a much smaller team working on it and it didn't need a engine created from scratch, also it could be being used as a testing ground for new ideas for the main series. All of this means that it might not need that many sales to be profitable, it will depend if BERT hit that target or not.

I'm looking forward to a new iteration to rummage through news feeds for new information.

It's probably worth distinguishing between the concept and the implementation of that concept. I think the hype building up to BE's release, and probably even the initial sales, demonstrated that there is an audience for the type of game that BE was trying to be. It seems clear that, although being a decent game in its own right, it didn't live up to everyone's expectations - but that's largely because expectations were really high, given a winning concept.

Why do you think games are announced so long before their release?

Seems like it's usually a year or more.

I think 5-6 months would work better. So...announce in June, release in October? Would be nice if that's how it worked out.

Firaxis actually has pretty low announcement ~> release times, but in the past it has always been spring and then fall release. We are getting to the point where even if an announcement comes, then 2017 is the probable date. Considering winter holidays and such tend to push things back.

That depends from one company to the next. Firaxis usually has small windows... also im betting for a xcom2 expansio so it wouldnt be so surprising
