Yet another hin at CIV VI being released this year

Well, tell me if Ed Beach is in any way included in the credits for X-Com 2 (I don't have it), and I will tell you if Civ 6 comes out this year.

:D

... and there you go.

;)

More seriously though, it's clear that Ed is working on Civ 6 since he saved Civ 5. And yes, even if the Shafer apologists don't like it, Ed Beach rescued Civ 5 from the disaster that an improvised "designer" did to it on launch. I said it 100 times before, and I will say it until... forever. But I don't need to say it, any intelligent person can follow the sequence of events since September 2010 and reach, well, an intelligent conclusion.

And that is why, to me at least, it is obvious that Ed is working on Civ 6, and hence, that there is a Civ 6 coming, and I am 96.7% sure it comes this year (although I accept the possibility that some suits are looking at the still strong sales of Civ 5 complete, once again, thanks to Ed Beach and team after Shafer, and hesitate to release Civ 6 "too soon", and instead continue to milk that cow...).

the Shafer apologists

I once attended a Shafer apologists meeting. They ordered pizza, said it would arrive in an hour. I left, but apparently they're still waiting on that pizza 2 years later.

Good people, though :goodjob:

I don’t really know anything about John Shafer nor Ed Beach. Yes GnK is so much more than vanilla, and BNW so much more than BnK. But could Ed have added religion and ideologies if Shafer had not left enough of a robust framework for adding those in? I think plans for both were in the works when Shafer left.

I think Ed deserves full marks for how well balanced are both religion and tourism. Yes, if Ed added religion and tourism from scratch, that would be amazing. But then why didn't diplomacy and AI combat see radical improvement under his watch?

So over on Twitter, I asked Brad the following question, "Brad do you or Soren know any insider information regarding the status of Civ 6"

His reply "none that I can share"

Well Its kinda a long shot to read into that but if you knew there was NOTHING you would say so, and if there was anything at all than I would assume the statement above.

Not much but its a hint, I guess.

As far as I know (there is an interesting reading about that somewhere in the net, but I don't remember where and cannot search now), yes, Ed and team had to built the new systems from scratch, and manage to make them work with the existing (poor) framework. Diplo and combat AI ARE better after BNW, and compared to vanilla, WAY better. Consider that it had to become better with new systems in place, so it's not an easy feat.

I feels duping all the problems of Civ 5 shaky launch on Shafer is quite problematic as it fails to take into account the realities of game development. There are a whole other range of factors, from pressure from publishers, all the way down to individual coders and artists that can effect the outcome of a game. To say this game was bad because of this one person, even if that person is the lead designer (unless it is a one person production team) just does not hold muster.

Now can you say some of the structures that exist that were problematic at the release come from decisions made in the planning phase by Shafer and other that did not pan out in the final release, sure. But can you say Civ 5's bad launch was all Shafer's fault, no, not really.

The core Civ5 vanilla design/production team was Jon Shafer, Dennis Shirk, Ed Beach and Scott Lewis. The core Civ5 G&K design/production team was Ed Beach, Dennis Shirk, Scott Lewis & Anton Strenger. Now, Anton is great, but if you're looking for the difference between Civ5 vanilla and G&K, time is probably a stronger explanation.

... and there you go.

We had a word for that kind of personality in South America: chanta. Impossible to translate accurately. Maybe Google is your friend...?

Shafer is the typical chanta. The way he "denounced" his own production after thousand of lines of complaints about it were written by the long term fanbase right here, in CFC, speakes volumes about his professionalism. Like it or not.

But this thread was about Civ 6, so let's go back to it, shall we?

So IF they plan to announce the game at E3 (14-16th June), how long before that Firaxis will inform that it makes an appearence?

Is there a standard that E3 participating companies are, for example, all known one month before or something?

I have the sense they are going back to October release dates, as in late October. Traditionally, they never announced the civ titles with a lot of ahead time, so for a late October release they still have plenty of time to announce.

The real question probably is: will the 2K suits stop the milking of the V cow when it is still giving some good milk, or will they force a year-skip for the sake of said milk (that is pure profits for the last 2 years or so)?

Yes, that was terrible. And he took no personal responsibility whatsoever, and demonstrated no insight as to what he would do differently in the future. I would also note Barbarians at the Gate is still not shipping...

Sure, it is pure profit, but it is not much profit. Isn't the nominal price for Civ5 Complete like $20 if you wait for a sale? Sales seems to be okay, but pretty flat.

I would expect the suits are comparing that to the $60 bucks they can expect on a new version -- with pretty much everyone who has already bought Civ5 as a potential customer.

So I think it comes down to how broken and buggy civ6 development is. Firaxis has demonstrated pretty convincingly that it only need be of beta quality. So I think we will see something in fall. I also agree with the folks pointing out that it could ship any time in 2017 and still be called a 25th anniversary edition.

Back when Total War: Rome II was released, I remember reading that the "big suits" like to have a big release before year's end/xmas so that it will be a good spike in the company revenue(not sure if revenue is the right word I'm looking for, english not my own language..).

There was talk that Rome II was released before year's end because of that instead of letting it get properly finished.

For a 25th anniversary edition they would have to ship it in 2016... oh boy, that unforgettable 1991... :)

I don't know if I share your guys's faith. If it was still March or even April, but now I'm not so sure. 2017 is becoming increasingly more likely.

I still give it time to the end of june. After that I won't expect it will be released in 2016 anyore.
