Ok so that's the error message I get when I try to install CIV IV. Can anyone help?

What language of the game and windows are you running? I have seen this error message only once, and it was when trying to install a french piece of software on a German windows, and after some effort, one of our tech support guys found that this error (at least in my case) was related to windows foreign language files. Have no idea if this might apply to your problem or not.

Ok sorry I haven't been on in a while. I still have this problem. I'm running english windows xp and an english version of CIV 4. Please help, I really want to play my game.

Buh. Well.. this is what 2kgames says about installation problems. Your symptoms are different, but I'd still try some of the fixes (especially those 2 at the bottom).

uhm ok, I got the game to install and now when I try to play I get this error message.

Anyway, the first thing would be to install the latest patch: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/patch/. Install the latest DirectX: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx.

If that won't suffice, we'll have to take a look at your system configuration. Please post your CPU, RAM, and above all, graphics card. "Failed to initialize renderer" is a really common problem and we should overcome it somehow.
