You gave me malicious popups!

J'accuse l'index! :p

Chances are there is a thread on this already, but I felt I should start a new one because, rather than simply complaining, I am also asking for help. When I first came to this site a number of popups appeared, which is not too unusual, though I did notice a particular news piece about malignant popups on the site. Then, popups started appearing at other webpages, where there were no popups before. Then many, many, many more than usual. Then I went online and was utterly flooded with them, including one that pops up every time trying to get me to sign a terms of service thingy for some unknown product. According to one of the popups, this is a result of spywhere (i seemed to fit all the symptoms). Rather than take more effective action, I simply got offline, changed the home page, deleted everything I could (including numerous programs that had made half of my Program Files folder things I had never seen nor ever wanted to see). This caused it to go away for a while. But its happening again. The "New Document" popped up, I had a new home page, programs try to install themselves every two minutes, and a number don't even have the manners to ask my permission first, Tricky.com is constantly asking me if I think some chick is hot whenever I open a thread, a program just a second ago installed itself after I typed the letter "d," and google has more popups than most porn sites. I have a cable connection, tend to leave it on (I don't give a damn if hackers use my thing, though I have saved a file to my desktop insulting them, out of hope that they will see it and I will, somehow, feel clever for having done that). I have absolutely no idea what to do, and plan to simply delete everything I find slightly suspicious, followed by a lot of cleaning. I also plan to leave the computer (a laptop) completely unplugged and under a pillow for the duration of my trip to St. Louis this weekend, when it will be at home.

As far as I can tell, this all came from this site. I hope you're all happy. :p

Seriously, though, I've brought this up to
1. Prevent this from happening to other people by notifying the staff. This was the site's main page, not the forums. It has spread to elsewhere, however, including the forums, and tends to take place continuously (like when some program set itself up halfway through my rant).
2. See if anyone can give me advice. I'm whatever the opposite of computer savvy is, so be very patronizing. Currently I plan to purge anything and everything that doesn't seem familiar, which will probably end up deleting notepad (happened a while ago somehow, but it reinstalled itself :crazyeye: )
3. Tell someone, because it was pissing the hell out of me
4. Subtly inform the citizens and citizenesses of the Demogame that I will be away until late Sunday, and thus unable to ask stupid questions and screw things up. :D

Hopefully this will have accomplished something good by the time I excavate it from the sofa cushion fortress I plan to build around it (to stop those damn popups/hackers from doing anything while I'm gone). :p

Also, the popups have begun inserting themselves into my favorites list, despite my clear dislike of them. And thank you for that link, I'll do those things upon my return.

Epimethius,

Have you visited the Windows Updates site? If you haven't, you definitely should to go there to download updates, especially the critical updates and service packs. It shouldn't take long to download the updates with a cable connection.

Those windows updates fix lots of bugs and exploits and make your computer much more secured. I installed nearly all the updates available. That's likely why I haven't encountered any bad ads that change my browser homepage or things like that.

Not screwed, it will just take longer....

Don't not do it simply because you're on dial-up. This can affect any internet user regardless of speed of connection.

It's well worth the time. Leave your computer up the whole night to download the updates if you have to. :) I have the automatic updates enabled so my computer downloads all critical updates the same day it's available and notifies me when the update is ready for install.

At least go there to scan your computer to see what updates are available... You'll be surprised to see the number of exploits that are fixed.

The problem with my dialup connection is that they time out before they can finish, and then have to start up again...just to keep timing out. Someone put together a pack of all the updates a while back as an installable package; I had a friend with cable download it for me and put it on a CD.

Isn' it possible to download each update separately so that when you eventually get disconnected you have at least managed to download some files.

Yeah, but that takes even longer than doing them all at once. Then you have to babysit it until each one is done.

I suppose if you have time on your hands....

Its probably worthwhile to get the downloads though and if thats the only way to do it...

Epimethius,
In addition to keeping up with the patches and updates for Windows (which I very strongly recommend you do, despite the hassle of doing it over dialup), there are software products available which can help you avoid malicious popups. ZoneAlarm Pro is available at computer stores for $40 or so. Also, have a broadband-equipped friend download the (free!) Mozilla Firefox version 0.8 web browser and use that for CivFanatics; I'm not aware of anyone using that browser having a problem with popups (including me). You can use still use Internet Explorer for anything you want after you've installed Firefox.

Or if you must use IE, get avant browser. It's IE core, but has lots of nifty features, including a pop-up blocker. All this time people have been complaining about trojans and popups here, I've been using Avant with no problems. And it's little over a meg d/l.

Or go to www.zonelabs.com and get the free version of the firewall. (I e not Pro)
Having a firewall is very good.

Little issue with that. I do not own a computer with internet acess. The only two computers with internet acess are in my brothers room(he does not understand the concept of internet security) adn my parents room(ditto) :(

@QwertySoft: Thats why I DL a DL manager a while ago. i wouldn't be able to DL much without it. ;)

Thanks for all the help. Tomorrow I intend to fix this, by doing all of those things recommended and deleting everything popup-related that I can find.

In one particularly strange incident, a large amount of porn was installed onto my mom's profile, which obviously I do not use, especially not for porn. That I managed to take care of myself, though.

Epimethius,

Marine Corps posted a link to a VERY useful thread. By far the best thing to do to get rid of spyware is to use AdAware. It is free and will identify and remove 99% of the crap on your PC that is pissing you off.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com

As others have mentioned GET A FIREWALL!!! This will stop you getting any more spyware in the future. ZoneAlarm (the free version) is perfectly adequate for your needs.

I recon 99.999% of the hasstle you get online is not hackers looking at your files, but automated spyware and other programs that don't have a user at the other end looking. These things are out there in their millions, so a firewall is essential to stopping them.

One last thing: IE is so flawed that you will still get spyware when using it to browse sites (especially if you go to warez sites), so make sure to run it about once a week anyway, even with a firewall.
