Your favorite Civ to play with and why

getting suzerain status of enough citystates as Pericles is nigh impossible on higher difficulties even with a fully wonderful Apadana city
I have played a few Pericles Deity games and found they are frighteningly good at becoming suze of at least half the CS as long as you

1. Explore fast
2. Get the acropolis in use fast
3. Push those quests
4. Do not go for popular CS
5. Do not build many CH <<< Seems still to be many peoples downfall

Peri will get you to the end of the culture tree way before anyone else if you play them smart

I have trouble with No. 4, since oftentimes it's hard to tell which CSes will be popular and which not (unless the AI don't explore--which happens in some games, but this is all undone if you are suzerain of a CS when they declare war on you, in which case the CS becomes reveals after the AI DOWs you).

Why does building commercial hubs make it harder to become suzerain of many CSes?

Are harbors a good alternative?

It denies you getting more Acropli and Campus

The secret is not to rush... wait, hold your envoys a bit, suddenly you will notice some CS's are being fought over by 2 or 3 civs. Yours is the long game, while Gorgo's is the short

Are harbors a good alternative?
Not really, only on island maps.... a good alternative is not to soak yourself in so much gold and always be trading your goods when you can. You do need some trade routes just 20 means you have less of other districts

Makes sense, but I usually build Campuses or Acropoli first (depending on which adjacency bonus is stronger), and CHs or IHs as a third option when playing as Pericles.

Good tip on saving the envoys. If only the AI would be less successful at obliterating the CSes...good thing they don't raze CSes though.

Not asking which one you think is most powerful, but rather which one you've had the most fun playing as. For me it has to be Arabia. They are not the strongest civ, but the madrassa is my favorite building in the game. Get 6 envoys with a couple of scientific city states, slot in the natural philosophy policy card (doubles campus adj.) and you will be generating a disgusting amount of science and faith per turn. I won a science victory with them the other week, was generating over 450+ science and 450+ faith a turn and I only had 5 cities. Highly recommend every try a turtle science victory with Arabia.

I like to play with the vikings and be the first to colonise on a nearby Island. Often i get 4 good city spots on immortal without AI opposition. Haralds other abilities are often hit or miss. Sometimes extremely effective and the other game pretty useless.

Going to try norway on the standard tsl map tonight, but drop down to emperor i think.

I am thinking norway would be ideal for early colonisation of america? (i tend to select only old world civs)

On ludicrous size TSL maps, marathon pace, all 26 civs, Emperor level...

Australia: tough pre-fall patch/DLCs because they were so isolated and other
civs got a better start with respect to city states and trade. A bit easier now
because Indonesia provide a buffer between Oz and Japan, and they also get
thumped by Khmer. (Indonesia are, all-in-all, quite weak and easy to steamroll
by pillaging, especially their Kampungs.)

England: my favourite in Civ5 because it was such a huge challenge to get them
going with so few hexes and the annoying "friends up north". They are easier to
play in Civ6, but still challenging because Kongo, Aztecs and Brazil are
powerhouses if left alone. It's difficult to disrupt all three simultaneously
early on.

China: Wonders galore; bottle up Japan so they can't expand and the rest is just
a matter of technique (except for Kongo, Aztecs and Brazil!)

In short: with my setup, Kongo, Aztecs and/or Brazil are very hard to beat. I
hate them and hope Firaxis introduce natural disasters so that I have something
to pray for (as a militant atheist).

Or introduce Maya's, Inca's, Ethiopia, Mali and Zulu. :p

Yeah I am hoping for more North American, South American civs, and maybe one more African civ now that you mention it. I love TSL maps, and I often include every civilization (I often alternate with either Gorgo or Pericles however). But the cramped European ones often can't compete with America, Pedro, and Kongo. and Indonesia is hopeless, the AI does not know how to deal with islands.

This talk of Australia has me wanting to fire up an Australian game right now. It's my Friday, and it's my normal Civ and drinking time. The question is TSL or Continents map.

I haven't played Civ 6 in a while. Just started playing again recently and having a lot of fun as Warmonger Gandhi. (Obligatory "Gandhi 2" link) Build holy sites and commercial hubs everywhere and a few harbors and campuses. Build archers, Varu, and battering rams, then spam warrior monks while waiting for Professional Army (so you can afford upgrading your archers) and Theocracy to unlock, then spam crossbows, muskets, field cannons, knights, whatever. And go kick some butt. (your monks and archers and Varu should be able to get you started capturing cities. Raze a few so everybody hates you. You stay at Theocracy even when new government types.

I won a cultural victory like that a few days ago; most of the culture was stolen, plus a few seaside resorts for extra tourism.

all the reviews say norway are poor, but i am having a lot of fun with them on tsl map although its early days

I dropped to emperor because my start was terrible. But those longships are great with the policy card in place i can churn them out.

I had several city states and the english wiped out very early (was funny doing viking raids on the english coast!)

When i logged off i was faced with the choice of more warmongering or super early colonization of the new world.

Trev I also very much enjoyed Norway on TSL (YNAEMP) earth. So much nearby forest. Get Goddess of the Harvest. Build your melee ships until one turn left and then chop. With leader ability and 100% naval card that is a 250% chop that also gives faith. Throw in the Venetian Arsenal and it's game over.

Honestly think that Norway would be a lot better/more fun if they made it so that pillaging fishing boats gave gold as well. As it stands right now naval pillaging is too weak in comparison to how important it was historically to Viking culture.

Hey softly, i cant run the giant earth map without really slow turns unfortunately, so im using the standard tsl, which is a truly horrid start, i just love the historical context of how the game has gone so far (pillaging the english, beseiging paris etc) - admittedly the vikings didnt colonize america but hey ho :)

As for faith, embarrasing to admit this but i never bother with religion.

Speaking of Norway, coastal pillaging is the thing, who cares 'bout them fishing boats? :D

Fishing boats healing is there for inferior other civilizations (not Norway) to be able to heal their ships :D

@Trev You can use faith to purchase great people (or units in theocracy) so it has value even outside of religion. Goddess of the Harvest is by far the best pantheon in nearly any circumstance, to the point where I don't choose it anymore since it makes the game too easy.

@Rosty that is kind of my point. Norway (from a historical and role playing POV) should have more incentive to raid fishing boats than other civs, not less. Norway is already widely considered one of the weaker civs so I think that giving them gold from fishing boat and farm pillaging would be a good move.
