Marathon, I think it's better balanced for huge maps.

When I play standard, I just can't get as immersed in the various phases ( for example there's no time to build and use musketmen) and war feels too easy, because the enemy stack is obsolete before it arrives . It feels as if techs are flying out of my ax, research choices don't feel strategic to me.

Marathon as well since I don't like when a game ends. Now that I'm used to the slower games I can't bring myself to enjoy a quick session. That's life.

Marathon since it gives you a greater atvantage earlier on. I find that I can build a far more impressive civ and conquest victories are easier. Although I do admit that they can drag on through some of the eras but overall believe it is more fun playing on marathon.
On standard I am usually first impressed by the speed at which I can build things but soon fall behind for not being able to keep up.

Dear God you people must be insane. How do you find the time for all these Epic and Marathon games!

I chose Normal because frankly, I just don't have the time for games that take much longer. I've done one Epic game I think, and that was for a GOTM. It took forever. I play Normal 75% of the time. The other 25% of the time I am in the mood to try something different like a new civ or a new strategy so I'll choose a Quick game.

There's a function called "Save". By "saving" you can play a little at a time.

I play Marathon (a little at a time).

I get bored playing the same game for more than a month. I prefer to finish my games in a week or so. Normal lets me do that. There are still at least 20 leaders I haven't tried and lots of official scenarios that I've done little more than play a few turns of, not to mention high-quality mods available here. I don't have time to play one marathon game "a little at a time" for six months (which is probably how long it would take me).

Epic. Because I would like marathon research speed with normal build speed, so I play epic.

More than a month? Geeze 1 hour a day and you can finish a nice marathon game in a week, maybe 10 days if you take your time. If you don't have time for 1 hour a day, why are you playing Civ in the first place!? ;)

Marathon, for all the reasons given and because it just "feels" right to me. When it first came out as an option, I switched and never looked back.

Here's one to consider, on the few times I have gotten the kids to try LAN games, they have wanted to do Marathon as well. We are in an ongoing discussion of how appropritate it is or is not for MP games. (Although we enjoy ourselves, we have yet to finish a game.)

I am sure for many here, the idea of a Marathon MP game would trigger shudders. Some people just don't understand obsession as a good thing. My family thrives on it. Some of us are that way for medical reasons. Some of us are just that way and have no excuse.

IMO, if you have time to watch the drawl/crap they try to pass off as television these days, you have time for Marathon.

I'm retired, and I can find the time to do whatever I want to do. I also multi-task it.

For me a game usually takes about one week. A lot of my playing time is done on my laptop, sitting in front of the tv in the living room, watching digitally recorded shows, many of my wife's choosing. She has a laptop, too, so she can shop on eBay.

Somedays I keep the game running and I'll think about it all day while doing other things around the house, entering commands each time I pass the machine, and I'll often play while eating lunch.

I'm a marathon player because, well, I'm a bit slow myself. I tend to play cautiously, and if I'm on a faster speed, by the time I finally decide I have a decent stack and declare war, I've lost any advantage I thought I had. Marathon speed gives me enough time to first realize my advantage, and secondly apply my advantage.

normal, cause its 'normal' and got used to it. i want to start a marathon game soon but university costs me a lot of time so i don't have the time to play that much and i hate it when i need to lay a game down for a week cause then i've lost all the fine thinking behind a game.

I chose epic cause its long enough to react to things. I would choose marathon but I am still new and want to experience more of the civs and leaders. I think marathon is great cause it makes civics more effective and you may actually use all of them

I don't know what y'all say about saving or playing for a week to a month.

Like I assume many players (probably not routine posters) have the sensation of watching the dawn rise after finishing a civ game, I must admit that is me as well. If I play on normal or epic on a reasonably sized map, I will play 2-3 days and not even turn off my laptop. I have "just" enough processing power to alt+Tab with Civ still running. HOF mod appears to have actually improved long term performance.

I don't play quick duel or quick tiny because for me, finishing a game in 15 minutes to just under 2 hours seems like a lack of investment. I would rather watch a movie if that were the case. Immersion is the best way to enjoy any game. The reason I enjoy civ over the MMO is that I don't hurt anyone if I don't show up for a week or two because work has kept me away.

Then I must be doing something wrong. :) I play normal speed and I had posted another thread asking about Quick Speed. I thought I stayed in the same game way too long. I thought Quick Speed would make he end the games quicker and start new ones quicker.

Do you put some units to sleep or automate them? I find I start losing interest (not enough to NOT finish my game thought ;) ) later in the game because I keep toggling between units. For example, I have 5 destroyers not doing anything. Should I just put them to sleep if there is no threat of war? What about all my workers? I just usually set them on automate trade routes.

All this being said, maybe that's the nature of the game. In the later stages, the game gets longer.
