Getting ready to declare war in a few turns and currently have a stack of (soon to be enemy) units traveling through my territory. Would like to attack these guys on a favorable tile when I launch. I know when war is declared these units will be transported to a tile outside my border ... the question is where?

Played around with worldbuilder and could discern what was happening usually but not always. Does anyone know the hard logic for how the computer teleports units when war is declared or open borders are closed?

I would say, it is (from the position of the unit) the nearest square that is friendly or neutral. If there are more then one, it is the one that is nearer to the capital of the units nation.

Am i wrong?

Cancel the open borders agreement first. They will be teleported outside your territory and you will know where before declaring war.

and, there's an admittedly very small chance that doing so would tick them off enough to declare war on you, which might avoid earning negative "you declared war on our friend!" modifiers which can be handy.

That's what I decided to do when they were 4 squares away from their territory (and heading back) and only 2 from a neutral area which was a good place for a ambush.

I would like to know the answer to the question, too.

It's definitely not always the closest neutral/friendly square.

Exactly, instead of moving 2 squares where I wanted them they moved 4 back to their territory.

Ugh, I mixed two situations: the one in which they are still on open borders terms with me - in which case canceling them won't mean much in terms of diplomacy - and the one in which they're angry, hence no open borders, hence (as you pointed out) they wouldn't have troops in my territory in the first place. :D Don't know if I'm actually making things clearer...
