Game costs are all about how many people working on the project and for how long. To put it into perspective, warcract 2 only cost 750,000 k to make, becuase the art was simple, so they only needed two artists to do all of the games art, and they were just using an updated version of an old engine. Diablo three had several more artists and twice the development cycle, but there were still very few programers, becuase the designers could just plug in new items and such using the old engine, it took roughly nine million to make and complete. Lets take a more recent title, a triple A title, lets say. Halo 3 cost forty million to make, but thats at the high end of the spectrum, so the average game today in developement takes about twenty million to make.
IIRC final fantasy seven also cost forty million just to make, and that was in 96 when a new game was forty dollars.
My dream game would be Hellgate: London with better writing and quests, LAN and mod support, general engine polishing, some rebalancing and regular content patches. Oh, how I miss the multiplayer in that one.
