Zwi1 - Low Pressure Deity

Preturn:
MM Atlanta to make aqua a turn earlier (Atlanta max out on pop so no need to work on food surplus)

IBT:
About 5-6swordsman and archers in the south (french)

250:
Washington makes horseman, starts horseman. (Not sure what the intention is for washington, but seems to have been allowed to grow beyond settler production)
Seattle makes worker, starts worker.

French completes Sun Tzu in Chartes

MM Boston to work on completed mined hill (growth at same time, market faster by 2turns)
Las Vegas founded, by the sea, how ironic, starts warrior.
MM St.Louis and Detroit for St. Louis to grow a turn sooner.
Phoenix founded, starts worker.

French has engineering. We can't afford it.

260:
Washington makes horseman, starts settler.
Kansas makes war, starts worker.
Sack a barbarian camp +25gp

Engineering is still too expensive. Astronomy cannot be bought.

270:
NY makes pike, starts pike (MM with Altanta to grow in 1)
Albuqueqe founded, starts archer

Thinking of cutting our loses in engineering(27turns left) and switch to a 40turn printing press gambit.
French wants 776g+63gpt for engineering. I think we should go for printing press. Please commend.

I will carry on after discussion.

Iroq+India are up by Monarchy+Chivalry.
French is up by above+engineering+astronomy+musical theory(776+36gpt).
Civ treasury: iroq(2), indian(4) and french(5)

Here is my advice for the current turn:

1. Since France has Engineering and there is so much time left on the min science, it is a good idea to change over to Printing Press. I actually expected someone to get Engineering much earlier which is why I cancelled the research on my last turn, but it turns out we might have had a good shot at discovering the tech at a discount. :(

2. Forbidden Palace: Unfortunately, even with a courthouse Memphis has 7 out of 9 shields corrupted (and suffers 11 out of 13 corrupted when set for maximum shields). Switch to a marketplace immediately and rush it to enable WLTK day for reduced corruption, then resume production of the FP.

3. Micromanagement: Washington makes 20 spt and should continue to build troops rather than settlers at this point due to the extra food expense at size 7+. New York can switch to settler and continue to be a source of new settlers. Atlanta is about to complete an aquaduct and will need food to grow, so take the workers currently mining the gems mountain and set them to chop the forests south of Atlanta.

4. Technology: None of the upcoming techs are immediately necessary, so it is safe to wait for India or the Iroquois to learn a tech before buying in. Of course, we would want Astronomy or Navigation before our palace builds runs out, but that is a ways off.

Thanks Zwingli, I wasn't sure the intention of Washington.

I'll wait till tomorrow morning for others comments.

Please explain the thinking behind above comments. IOW, help me process what you've written.

@dojoboy

Atlanta is at pop of 6 without aquaduct. It also has max food in the food tray. Hence making any surplus food is waste. I moved the pop working on irrigating land to mined hill, hence increasing shield production, while reducing food production(which is wasted anyway).

Washington is greater than 7 pop, the granary requires twice the amount to fill. Hence it is not worthwhile to reduce pop. However, you will realise for now, producing 20spt is wasting 10 spt every other turn as the best unit we can produce is a horseman or a swordsman (30sp). Hope I explain this right.

Also I will wait another 2 more hours. If there are no objections to switching to printing press, I will finish my turns starting a 40turn PP gambit.

Thanks gormdragan, that is clear. This is exactly the kind of game-play I lack, which keeps me solidly on monarch w/ occasional wins on emperor. I usually just go head lng into a game w/ little thought. This SG is good for me, especially w/ the 10 turn plays to keep me focused.

Sorry for the delay, pple. I was called back to work on Sunday and hence could not finish the game. Will do so tonight.

270:
As per advised, I rushed marketplace in memphis, hopefully corruption becomes managable for FP. We aren't going for war any time soon so we can forget about depending on great leader.
give up our research in engineering, start a 40 turn PP gambit.

I made a simple calculation, with the mined hill that is to be completed and another mined mountain, Washington can produce 30spt a turn (1turn swords/horseman).

Miami change to rax, since Miami will not grow anytime soon, might as well use miami to produce units(vets better than reg)

Buffalo can be a power production city when there is little production, we might want to rush a marketplace (next player can veto).

WM yield us 2gp.

280:
Washington makes a horseman, starts col to keep 12 pop happy. With 12 pop, Washington can make 30spt a turn, enough be a 1turn unit factory.
Atlanta makes aquaduct, starts horseman.
Memphis makes market, starts FP
Portland (spice city) was founded, starts worker.

WM yields us 2gp.

I intend to rush the last 2 turns of Wash's col so that wash can produce horseman every turn.

290:
Cincinnati makes worker, starts worker (lots of jungles to clear, lots of roading to the south)
Memphis celebrates WLTKD. FP in 49 turns.
Cleveland makes worker, starts worker.
French starts Leo, implying they have invention.

WM yields 2gp.

300:
Rushed settler in NY, starts NY.
Miami makes rax, start pike.
New Orleans makes horse, starts horse.
Sacked a bar camp, +25gp
Need to MM NY to grow and make at the same time

WM yields 1gp.

IBT:
French have about 5-10pikes, 10-15swords, 3-5horseman in the east of our civ....We may be at risk of invasion once we run out of settling space.

310:
Atlanta is a 3turn horseman city (11spt per turn, can't be improved), makes horse, starts horse.
Boston makes market, starts horseman (need to rush 1 turn earlier to so that settler can be timed properly)
Denver makes worker, starts worker.
Memphis hires a clown to maintain WLTKD.

OMG....scratch my previous estimation, at see 15swords so must be more than that. We need military fast.

vet horseman kills consript bar war.

WM yields 1gp.

IBT:
French reveal 20+ swords, I will get an ROP with French to prevent war, as tao has pointed out, we are dead meat if French attack us.

320:
Seattle makes worker, start horse
I gave French 28gp for ROP, French is now gracious. I hope this can deter them.
Boston rushes horseman.

IBT:
Despite ROP, French troops moves towards our cities.....I count at least 50+ units.
India+Iroq sue for peace.

330:
Washington makes col, starts horseman (mountain mine due in 4 turns)
Boston makes horseman, starts settler
Indian's start Cop Ob.(They have astronomy now)

Vet Horse sacks bar camp, +25gp

Settler at NY rushed to time growth.

WM yields 3gp.

Summary:
NY could use mined hills
a spare pikeman in San Diego is waiting for settler to arrive for escort
Boston+NY are producing settlers
Atlanta in need of irrigated grasslands
Might want to hook up gems in San Diego for trading purpose
Atlanta/Boston are 3 turn unit producers, Washington is 2 turn (soon to be 1 turn)
Worker crew in process of linking up spice city
Seattle is low corruption city, give priority for working.
Cincinnati needs MM next turn to time production and growth.
We might want to rush market in Buffalo.

Diplo:
French(Gracious) has Monarchy, Engineering, Chivalry, Music Theory, Astronomy and Invention.
4gp, we have quite a few treaties with french, hopefully they dun attack us.

Iroq(Polite) has Monarchy, Chivalry. 2gp. We have no treaties with them.

India(Polite) has Monarchy, Chivalry and Astronomy. 2gp. 11turn silk deal with them.

We should wait for Iroq to get Astronomy before we get it (Important as it decides our GA)

P.S. If you look at current save, the french army is even more scary.

Wow, that is one scary French Army. If it looks like they are going to attack, I will buy as many techs from them as possible on credit, then buy alliances with India and Iroquois after the war starts. (Got it, and will complete the turns tomorrow).

We just have to keep going, until our FP comes online. I would suggest to buy astronomy now and trade it for chivalry.

We also need 4 or 5 more settlers really fast to claim the territory around the future FP.

Once Portland is connected, we have another asset to sell.

Good luck Zwingli and keep the French drunk ahh happy. ;)

330 AD(0)
Aside from moving a few workers and changing a build or two everything looks good. I will play 12 turns to bring the date to 450 AD.

(IT) - The French army starts moving north toward their territory.
Buffalo riots and gets an entertainer.
NY Settler->Settler
Richmond warrior->temple
Phoenix warrior->worker

(1)
I go to Chicago and temporarilly change the palace to a scout. The advisor said that the change would waste 234 shields, so that means we have 244 shields accumulated. At 13 spt there are 12 turns until Chicago can build Copernicus, so I will buy Astronomy before that point.

(IT) - The French troops are headed south again. It looks like they are sending their entire army after some barbarians in the south.

(2)
Rather than improve tiles around fully corrupted cities, I switch some of them to courthouses and begin chopping forests to complete the builds more rapidly.

(IT) - 3 Indian settler pairs continue to move through our territory (without ROP), and Iroquois boats are moving settlers by sea. We have the advantage of roads, and will get most of the better city sites.

(3)
We hook up the second gems (we are trading away the first, and join a worker to Memphis shaving a few turns off the Forbidden Palace.

(4)
The mine outside of Washington completes, but it only gets 29spt after corruption. Washington set to courthouse to attempt to recover the last shield.

380 AD (5)
Atlanta has some forests chopped to allow growth beyond size 7. Chicago grows to size 10 and can finish Copernicus in 7 turns. The French city competing for Copernicus is also size 10, but is far from Paris (the French have also gone through Anarchy at some point as they are a Republic).
Buy Astronomy from India for Ivory + WM + 365g + 27gpt.
Trade Astronomy to Iroquois for Chivalry + WM.

Washington switches to a knight which wouldn't be helped by 30 spt anyway. Copernicus is started in Chicago, and it is due in 6 turns after the city is assigned an extra mountain (losing 2 food per turn however).

(IT) - New York settler->settler.
Renew the wines for silks deal with France, giving 5gpt more.
The French army is now in the far south chasing barb camps.

(6)
Start gathering the available horsemen near Memphis for organization purposes. Some more forest chops finish near corrupted cities. Found Minneapolis east of Memphis.

(7)
San Francisco finished its aquaduct and is set for growth. The French have 35 swordsmen + 11 other units moving past our spices city.

(IT) - Pay 3gpt more to France while renewing gems for wines deal.
We discover a new source of iron.

(8)
We hook up one of the spices, and Memphis can now work all tiles at size 8 while maintaining WLTP day. (16 turns to go on the FP)

(9)
Continued jungle chopping in the cities surrounding Memphis in anticipation of the FP. The southwestern cities get more forest chops to speed along the courthouses.

(IT) - One of our scouts gets ambushed by barbs.
Marketplace completed in Atlanta and Washington starts on a university (built a library after the first knight)

430 AD (10)
Copernicus will complete next turn which means we will get a golden age [dance].

(IT) - As expected, we get Copernicus starting a Golden Age.
Boston and Chicago start libraries as we may be able to research significantly owning Copernicus in a Golden Age.

(11)
Our FP is now due in 9 turns.
Rush Courthouse in Baltimore for 24g.
Rush courthouse in Detroit for 72g. (both of these were nearly complete due to forestry).
We crank up research on Printing Press and can get it in 8 turns while breaking even.
Buy Engineering from India for silks + WM + 450g.
Sell Engineering to Iroquois for Music Theory + 29g.

(IT) - Courthouses complete in New Orleans, Baltimore, and Detroit significantly improving output.

450 AD (12)
A round of worker and city management.

Military: We have 14 horsemen, 2 knights, and 45 workers (+4 slaves). If France attacks I think we can now hold them off with a horseman upgrade.

Management: A few workers near Minneapolis should head south and hook up the other two spices for trading purposes (I forgot to hook up more than 1). We have 2 settlers in the area which can found additional cities around Memphis.

I have set the core cities to build libraries/universities, but you can also buy Banking from India or France to get Wall Street. The Iroquois lost some key cities to India during the war, and are falling behind in technology, so we might have to do some research rather than buying tech at inflated prices.

Just a thought, you might want to unhook the iron to build 1 turn horsmen for upgrade

Great to get the GA starting. IMHO we need to maximize our benefit from it:

I would NOT build a settler in new York, because its cititzen are producing a lot. Hurry a settler in San Diego instead. Fire the useless scientist.
Detroit can be micromanaged to finish aqueduct in 13 turns.
Baltimore might better build an aqueduct before the market.
I would set Dallas to market to trigger wltkd.

We did/do not clear the optimal tiles from jungle. A lot of river tiles would give 3 commerce and we work 0 commerce ones.

I would have upgraded about 3 horsemen to knights to protect our settlers.

The settler race is on. The Indians are coming and we should claim the prime southern spots first. Very important for our future!

no just 10 turn, zwingli played 12 to right the clock.

Just a couple more tips for dojoboy:

Buffalo is a large city which will suffer significant corruption even after the Forbidden Palace completes, so you might want to rush the courthouse there to recover some golden age production. You can also use a few of the horsemen to run interference and slow down the Indian settlers so that we can get the best sites around Memphis (block the southern diagonal tile so that the settlers have to move in non-cardinal directions and take 50% more time to reach their destination).

Zwingli, IMHO, WLTPD works better against corruption than courthouse. I would vote for marketplace instead, if we haven't done so.

I believe that both the courthouse and WLTKD have the same effect on shields (25% reduction in rank waste), but courthouses also affect the loss of gold (25% reduction in rank corruption).
