I'm not sure what the hell is going on precisely, but I'm getting combat previews on the order of 45 vs 30 only to take more damage than I'm dealing, time after time again. Level 2 Cogs versus level 1 Kalams.

By my rough estimate they have about 25 combat strength more than the preview is showing.

EDIT: I originally thought this was an issue with the Kalam, but it's a general issue with all ships. I just attacked a Cog with my Carrack, one owned by an AI that doesn't even have Shipbuilding yet (it's stuck on one city and I saw it take damage when trying to traverse the high seas not ten turns ago), and I took more damage than I dealt despite all my combat bonuses.

EDIT2: I also deal significantly less damage than the preview shows when attacking embarked units. Now I'm wondering if the issue is that my own units have a bug in their combat strength.

It's a generali naval combat bug, it's happening with all the types of ship; in the preview is reported that you win the fight and then you lose a lot to deal almost no d'amare. No idea if it's a UI bug or the combat values itselfs are bugged

There is the commander promotion that lowers reciprocal damage. So, maybe there is a hidden reciprocal damage amount that isn't being reflected in the UI?

Is this happening on coastal, open sea, or navigable river tiles?

Happens on both coastal and open sea. I haven't fought on navigable rivers.

The AI does not have a commander with his ships anywhere. I do have one in some battles, but they don't have such a promotion and their presence doesn't seem to make a difference in how strong the AI units are.

I have yet to see any such behaviour in my 70 hours of play, so there must be specific circumstances that trigger it.

I just played through a Chola run and did a lot of naval warfare, I didnt notice anything of this sort. Maybe share a save

This is the other thread reporting the bug, I think they are the same; don't know what trigger it

So, I just started a new game. Did some ship to ship combat. The combat preview shows me dealing X damage and receiving none. However, I always receive some. This makes sense, since the ships are "melee". Strange that it didn't show in the preview both times that I attacked.

This was in antiquity age with galleys.

I noticed this too. I thought it was a UI bug, but there's probably something else going on as the AI ship's strength was totally out of whack.

I think it may just not be showing the return melee damage in the preview. I am currently in the exploration age and this is what I am seeing. One of the patches made ship to ship combat melee, but maybe someone forgot to include it in the preview calculations.

It still makes no sense that ships with much higher combat strength are taking more damage than they deal. Something is bugged with this mechanic. Wish it got addressed in the upcoming patch because it makes anything naval unplayable.

I’m wondering if the preview is still calculated on ranged attack even after the actual combat was changed to melee.

First weird thing: Both Cetbang & Galleon L3 have Combat of 45 and RangedCombat of 40. Neither of which are the 43 shown:

I just ran a quick test using the cheat panel to prep.

Carrack (me) = 40/35/30
Cog (AI) = 35/30/25

ROUND 1

Before: 44 (me) v 35 (ai)

Actual: -27 (me) v -23 (ai)

ROUND 2
Before = 41 (me) v 33 (ai)

After = -25 (me) v -31 (ai)

So part of the variance can probably be explained by 2 x Global Parameters:

COMBAT_DAMAGE_MULTIPLIER_MINIMUM = 0.25
COMBAT_DAMAGE_RANDOM_PERCENTAGE = 30

I can't really find / figure out any other particular patterns to it, but there's definitely something suss here.

This happened to me as well. It was most noticeable when attacking embarked units with my ships. It would frequently estimate that I would kill them in one shot, but I would only do 30-50% damage to them instead
