Well, I thought I should join in the fun and post yet another "it doesn't work" thread.

The game seems to run fine for a random period of time, then the PC either crashes completely to a black screen and auto reboot,

or; the screen freezes completely. No input is possible, ctrl, alt, del doesn't respond, a soft reboot is the only option,

or; the screen turns black, the PC freezes completely and again ctrl, alt, del doesn't help. The difference this time is that the speakers make a strange intermittent white noise pulse.

No crash log files are made with any useful info, although one entry in init.log says something about "NOT Using XML cache, failed to find crc.dat file". No idea what that may mean.

I'm using the latest drivers all round, also tried some of the tricks mentioned around here. No luck :( I'm wondering what percentage can't reliably play this game... Here's hoping for yet another patch.

EDIT: I did find a couple of weird entries in resmgr.log:
RESMGR: Texture PlayerColor01.tga failed to load
RESMGR: Texture PlayerColor02.tga failed to load

and Lsystem.log has a million warnings stating:
Node Leaf_3x1 has no generic art matching constraint xxxxxxx
building:Art/Structures/Buildings/Obelisk/Obelisk.nif does not contain a node called SHADOW. Its shadow, if present, will be corrupt! etc, etc.

First let me state I hate this hell spawn of a game. WHen it plays it is like crack. Which makes the lock ups and ctd's all the more painfull.

I do have to ask though, have you tried a uninstall, reboot, clean up of directories (including any and all files added by civ), then reboot, install to a different directory, reboot and a patch?

Before you ask yes I have problems still. I have gone back to the 1.09 patch and Harks patch to be able to play. Truthfully that is getting less and less. I do not like having my rig lock up tighter then a virgin in High school.

This was my "first time" this evening, so I've never installed anything other than the second patch and I already installed the game to a separate partition. There really shouldn't be any files to clean up, I've only been trying to play it for four hours!! I think my PC has seen enough reboots for one evening...
