#1 country in Youtube censorship: Germany

100% of youtube video are banned in China.

You cannot even go to the website. Same for facebook, bloomberg and twitter.

I do not know how they make this list as the link is in German...

To clarify the GEMA's position on youtube videos: They demand a flat payment of € 0.00375 for each view on videos GEMA claims to have distribution rights on.
While it seems reasonable on first glance to pay €3,750 for a million view hit video, it is easily understandable how this demand would force google to close down youtube altogether.
Paying 4 million Euros to GEMA just because they claim a right on Gangnam Style for which they didn't even pay?
Sure, you can argue that google is using the videos for ad revenue, but at least they provide a world wide public service while the GEMA just acts as a parasite, raking in money for doing nothing.

Must be all those Downfall parodies.
Yes, those too, but in these cases the GEMA isn't to blame. It's the copyright holder itself taking down those parodies in an act of complete idiocy. Even the actors and the director love and endorse those parodies publicly, but hey, copyright, y'know. :crazyeye:

Anyway, the downfall parodies don't rank in the top 1000, so they don't count in this statistic.

And even then, I doubt they're very popular in germany...if you actually speak german, those parodies aren't funny at all since it's almost impossible to focus on the subtitles if you understand what's being said (at least that's how it is for me)

One would think the Vatican wouldn't need to ban Youtube videos, since all the citizens should have enough sense to not watch bad videos.

Are there videos on youtube that aren't bad. Don't get me started on the comments section.

To everyone suspecting swastikas or something like that (let's say HOI let's plays), there is no "anti-swastika agency" in Germany which searches the internet for illegal swastikas. If nobody complains, nothing happens. And no one has commercial interests in taking down swastika videos.

Copyright laws are really that strict in Germany?

Colour mich surprised
I don't even think they're a lot stricter than American laws. It's just that the German association of copyright holders is that anal about seeing them enforced.

That was a joke anyway. But I do need clarification. Those top 1000 videos, are they for the country or worldwide?

Are there videos on youtube that aren't bad.

Of course there are. University channels pump out hours of informative lectures and seminars every week.

I expect they're worldwide, after all what video will make it to the 1000 most played vids if it can't be played ;)

They might still make it, and then get censored after the fact.

I was expecting Red China to have the #1 on YouTube censorship.
I guess 100% censorship doesn't make it on to the list.

Some other countries I expected to top the list aren't on it for the same reason:

As of September 2012, countries with standing national bans on YouTube include China, Iran, Pakistan, Syria, and Turkmenistan.
