1001 Quick Tips and things you learned

When building the end-game spacerace projects, or basically in the end game period; remember that the Conservation Civic allows your workers to plant forests. If you turn all your flatland into forest you can massively boost your production, just make sure you don't get the city into starvation.

Yes, and even better is if you still have original growth forest left, you can rush the space projects by chopping them down... this makes no real sense but hey, it's Civ :)

... and then you can plant new forests and create lumber mills to have the best of both worlds

You only get full XP from barb combat until you take your first promotion. After that, you will see that XP gain is capped at +1 XP per combat. It takes a LOT of barb combat to earn promotion No. 2 (much less higher promotions).

If you are in an early war - and about to take the last city of your enemy - you can keep it in their hands - and round after round shoot arrows/catapults in it. 4XP per attack - even when there is no defender in the city and defences are gone.
As there is almost no warweariness penalty (unhappy from previous civ's) - you can promote your entire ranged army. The swordsmen / other melee cannot benefit though as they would capture the city. They can defeat any enemy spawning though...

my tips:

-Don't attack barb scouts unless you have nothing better things to do. go directly and kill their camp, even one warrior can do it
-buy relics from ai
-getting a spot with 2 or more luxuries is a good investment even if you plan to neglect that city.

A question from me: do we have a definitive answer wheter more than one luxury of the same type is useful for or cities or not? I've heard differetn things. one thing for sure: The ai buys any amount of luxuries of the same type as log as it has money.

You can start researching and get the eureka while you are at it. In fact you can research half of it and change to another one. It will get automatically discovered once you get the eureka.

- Great scientists in the earlier eras are not very strong.

I generally agree except for two: both Hypatia and Hildegard von Bingen can actually be quite strong. Hypatia provides +1 to Science from all Libraries (and builds one) and Hildegard essentially turns one Holy Site into a Campus by having it provide adjacency bonus equal to Faith in Science as well - this can be quite useful, especially if you have a pantheon like Dance of Aurora, when a Holy Site can generate 6-7 Faith from adjacency alone.

Do not neglect faith if you are going for a culture victory because you really want national parks. Holy districts is perhaps the second most valuable district for a culture victory after the theater square.

You mean "are not going for religious VC"?

But yeah, national parks cost a lot of faith. Need to really store that up before they come online.

I ment culture victory. It is pretty obvious to get faith if you are going for religious victory but less so for a culture victory.

Hopefully the exploit allowing you keep getting XP from bombarding cities with 0 HP will get patched.

That's been in Civ games as long as we've had xp. It's not a very potent trick.

Here's some simple tips...

Harvesting bonus resources is a great boost and handy when the city doesn't need them. For example: Early game quarries aren't very good later. Remove the quarry (no build action cost) and then harvest the stone for a one-time production boost. Then replace with the district of your choice.

You can clear marshes for a one-time food boost. This is awesome for jump-starting cities at the cost of a single build action since they aren't very useful in most circumstances.

Have at least one city with a developed industrial district and send internal trade routes to that city from your new cities to help them build up substantially quicker than normal. Yes, gold is awesome but you can't use gold to buy districts, only the buildings you put in them. Use this trick to build the districts and then put the traders back to earning gold for you.

In 5, a 0 health city gave nothing, and a city with 1 archer and itself could kill all your units without 3 range. Some people did use the city state they DOW to worker steal to get some general exp and be closer to range 3. General exp and getting super powerful range 3 archers are gone, but now you end up fighting cities that can't shoot back sometimes and early wars have basically no penalty, especially with CS where you didn't get a free envoy and the quest isn't something you plan on doing. That said... It does slow you down from you know... Taking the city for yourself.

Now for tips...

You can plant districts well in advance if you know where to place them, even more useful if you already own the tile and don't plan on using it. This will fix the cost of the district which slowly creeps up as you get more advanced, just make sure nothing will change your mind.

Secondly... Internal trade routes are based on number and type of districts in the city you target. Don't neglect your capital districts too long since it's one of the best ways to grow a new city. Encampments, Commercial and Industrial give extra hammers. Most others give bonus food.

Once that trade route is done growing your new city, a tradepost will form. Getting in a routine to send your first traders BACK to the capital and then out from the capital to international locations is not only a good way to grow cities and make future trade routes very good for gold.

Best way for me to learn AI agendas is playing Catherine.
She can get into hidden agenda during Ancient era by sending 25 gold to Ai. Its also give you a nice buff to relation.
And on higher difficulties AI dont like you by default. So, for a peaceful ancient era its nice to send som gifts and ensure you get some trading partners early.
This works if you intend to play the hard way though, as a peacemonger. Atm it seems that early aggression gets you more rewards than playing nice...

Check the Great People screen frequently and make sure you buy (gold/faith) the ones you really want if it's a close thing, or you need them at a specific time.

And don't be afraid to pass if you don't see much value from the one that does pop up for you, you'll get the next instead.

This only really applies to the non cultural guys - the culture ones could use some variation.

If you levy the army of a city state, you can disband it all when you don't want it anymore (you don't get gold for that, sorry), then they will build new up to date units. This could potentially make levying a viable strategy, especially for Sumeria.

Example: I levied Carthage army, which was enough of warriors+pults to zerg rush a 5 city emperor AI in the early medieval era. At the end I disbanded all warriors and now Carthage spammed a carpet of Crossbows, which would have been a very valuable asset in the next war, if there had been any more AI to invade at that time.

Levying to disband can also in some situations be useful just to get rid of those units blocking your way. Had to do this to get my late game Great Scientist to the preferred 6 rainforest location.

Check the fog of war tosee barbarian encampments spawn. You will see them immediately when they appear.
Particularly interesting if playing Sumeria, since a barb encampment in the atomic age can still trigger an eureka.
