In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

World War I was the stupidest thing.

It's traditional to observe 2 minutes of silence at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. I'll probably be asleep, so I hope that counts.

Once-yearly avatar change. Back to the Voldemort Eyes tommarow...

The saddest part is that there has been stupider wars.

Stupider causes, maybe. But none stupider in how they were fought.

:salute:

I have also added a poppy to my avatar for this day.

:salute: Salutations to the victims and veterans of this horrible war.

The Habs motto is from Flanders Field:

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.

Nos bras meurtris vous tendent le flambeau,
à vous toujours de le porter bien haut.

:goodjob:

The First World War ended exactly 88 years ago (+1 minute).

I salute all those young men that lost their life in a most useless and cruel war. Let human mankind learn from this one fine day...maybe maybe one day we do not have to have remembrance days anymore

Armed forces service members are purely and simply the instruments of policy for the nations' governing bodies. They are merely tools used in attempt to accomplish a desired goal.

There is no glory. Only politics. A filthy machine of death and deceit, which plays upon the naivities of society's masses.

I'm a veteran, btw. Happy Day. :salute:

Nope sorry. During that 2 minutes you are supposed to think about adn thank those who made the sacrifice.

Of course, 11am means the start of the second half of Saturday morning football, and since it won't be 11am in the UK they won't take a moment out, guess I'll just have to shut the TV off.

Other than the Second World War (from the allies point of view), I can't think of any war that wasn't stupid.

But I'll still give my respects to all veterans. :salute:

What about you guys burning down the White House... that was pretty brilliant, no?

I jest. :mischief:

:salute:

I'll be going to the Halifax Grand Parade for the ceremony there..Oooops! Better get going!

I don't think so. At least if you are a patriotic, nationalistic, bastard that says all irish and saudi-arabians are a pain in the bum, like's to keep all imperial measures and currencys, and so on. Only when it's OK.

WWI didn't occur because some old monarch died. It was because France and Germany couldn't stand the sight of each others. It's called nationalism.

Couldn't say it better if I tried.

There's no doubt that the Germans set all the dominoes in place, but it was the Austrian Archduke's Assassination that started knocking them down.
