Well a few reasons, one when it is built it has an effect on the Map... so if I Build the Great Wall, and then my neighbor conquers half my cities (excluding the one with the Great Wall), He now has some cities that are protected from barbarians.. even if he doesn't get the Defensive Generals. (so he can effectively 'capture it' without taking any particular city

Also No engineer Rushing is a minor Reason.

Finally it would just be cool to have an Ancient 'Project'


As for the effects not expiring, the 'Wall' is a map feature, NOT a feature of your cultural Borders... When you Finish the Wall it goes where your cultural Borders are NOW (ie the Great Wall is NOT on China's Modern Borders...but on its Borders at the time) So it really would be useless with a Terra Map

Also it might act like City Walls so that Gunpowder Barbarian units can cross it. (and Gunpowder or Rifling might make the Great General effect expire)
 
One question with the Great Wall. If at the time of building the wall, I had a city who's borders weren't connected to the rest of my nations, would the wall just go around the border that contains the buildng city, or would it go around all of the borders.

I'm guessing it's the former as having a second mini wall would be stupid but does anybody know for sure?
 
I would imagine all your borders, so you could have multiple mini Walls if your territory was a number of seperate cities. Basically it would prevent any cities you had at the time of completion from being invaded by barbarians.
 
the great wall video and advantages are the best ! Sometimes in game the barbs can be raging without having the option clicked .... its going to be good for my play style!
 
I think it would be nice if the Wall also provided the defensive effect of a River (-25% for crossing it on the attack) but not applied to your own troops ofcorse. That would give it some use against other players as well.

Temple of Artemis I was hoping for Free Granary in every City.

Well they already give it a bonus to Generals if you are defensive so That works....and the Real Great Wall didn't help against anyone on a scale of a Player (ie the Mongols)
