2008-2009 Mlb offseason

Congrats to the cubs for landing premium closer Kevin Gregg. Trades with the marlins always work out oh so well for us. I guess instead of getting a pitcher with an extra finger from them we got a pitcher with an extra G on his name.

Ha, great post! :goodjob:

Didn't Gregg have more blown saves than anyone? Plus didn't he lose
his closer role too? I guess Marmol will be the man. :scan:

What I am reading from cubs.com makes me suspect marmol will be the closer.

You guys got Gregg though. Granted, I think Marmol will probably be the closer of the future.

Speaking of closers, I hope my Mets get Fuentes. K-Rod is overrated and not worth the money.

the mets'll need a little more than a closer if they want to compete in '09. their entire BP singlehandedly cost them a spot in the playoffs :D what a beautiful thing to have watched, too :p in all seriousness though, it was one of the most disasterous efforts by a BP that i've ever seen. so imho, the mets will need to start from scratch w/ these guys if they want to compete...

Maybe the met's will go after wood.

The Mets are a playoff team, with a solid bullpen. And getting Fuentes is the first step to building that solid pen. Anyone have a list of bullpen free agents?>

the thing I like best about the off-season, everyone has the same hopes for next season (thanks to the Rays)!
I think that the Willingham/ Olsen trade was a salary dump for the Marlins and a little lopsided in favor of the Nats. Olsen is a potential 10-15 game winner, and if I had my way, Willingham would replace the disappointing Kearns in the OF...that is if Pena or Dukes don't live up to their potential.

You know what would be an amazing pick up (at this point) for the Nats? Teixeira at 1B!

Olsen is a clubhouse problem waiting to happen. Willingham is a good player.

Since when do the Nats care about clubhouse personality  Just look at Dukes and Milledge... Olson will fit right in with those guys!

Although I have to question the Nationals front office, while the deal was great for them, it seems to be they have more outfielders on their squad then the rest of their other position players combined... Kearns, Milledge, Dukes, Willingham (and is Nook Logan still there?), plus from what I've read they are targeting Adam Dunn as their next clean up hitter. Who's playing 2nd for them - they just traded away their 2nd basemen of the future in that deal!

with all due respect :) i disagree :)

it's actually one of the funniest things that i've recently heard :p let's be honest here - that BP was God-awful. it was like a revolving door last season. and i don't like to be one of those hen-peckers but the mets missed the playoffs the last 2 years :p

I think the met's are a playoff team. They got a killer rotation and line up.

Playoff team? Possible (and that's being optimistic). Killer Rotation and Line-Up? Questionable at best.

Rotation: After Santana, Maine, and Pelfrey, who do they have left that isn't a free agent? And who exactly are the Mets getting to fill them?

Bullpen: Laughable at best. Heilman is demanding to be in the rotation or be traded, so while he wasn't good in the 'pen last year, it's still one more arm they have to fill. And assuming they do sign a closer (likely Fuentes, but it's Minaya...) they still have to find a bridge to gap the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings.

Line-Up: Besides David Wright, where's the right-handed pop in this line-up (I didn't include Beltran and his 178 RH AB, although for that small sample size the numbers are good)? And will Delgado duplicate his resurgence, or was the 2nd half an aberration? And Fernando Tatis?!?! Need I say more there?

Now admittedly, my little report on the Mets is a little biased, seeing as I am a diehard Yankee fan (who'll admit his own team has major flaws as well) who could care less about the Mets (and that's putting it nicely).

Who else is going to win the wild card? The diamondbacks? It's not really so much they are a playoff team it's pretty much though that the national league is AAAA compared to the american league.

The NL won the WS this year! The Al west, and AL central are pretty bad. They may win the all star game every year, but I think we are pretty close to equal.

the cubs are good enough, i guess, to win the wild card :p

interleague and the all star game is had by the AL. but 7 game series...are a far different animal imho. i mean, anything goes in a 7 game series imo. yes, the NL is weaker on paper. but that's why they play the games :)

Please the Jays would be a playoff team in the N.L

Let's put it this way: The Jays would be a play-off team in any league or division if they weren't in the AL East. The AL East is just a monster of a division - it's extremely difficult to compete in which just makes the Rays run to the W.S even more incredible.
