2010 PC game of the year according to gamespy is... CiV!

Its a great game I.M.O.,having great fun with it but i understand people who dont think it deserves this award.

Units don't consistently obey orders! It doesn't just "not deserve" the award, while issues like that are still around it doesn't even deserve being CONSIDERED for an award.

Game of the year my a**. More like dissapointment of the year. 2K must have lined their pockets with even more swag.

Another award given by my mother.

Of course I am !! Any doubt ?

Civ V can't touch Starcraft II with any pole in existence. Sc2 has 0 control flaws, runs well according to its specs, and generally doesn't fail any of the gameplay 101 basics that V fails. When you give an input in sc2, it happens.

This topic encouraged me to check out Starcraft. Can you or someone else explain how sc2 has improved from sc? My first impression is that the gameplay is identical, only with much better graphics and multiplayer functionality.

Civilization 4 w/expansions was an excellent game but fundamentally flawed. Civilization 5 has begun to seriously redevelop the combat system of a gaming mega-series. The combat system of Civilization has long been its weakness, and in this regard I rate Civilization 5 really highly. Im tempted to agree with its goty title because I cant think of any other revolutionary games released this year.

that depends on how good your dog is

Again, not until a unit on the screen with a displayed order actually executes that order every time. Civ IV didn't do it. Civ V hasn't done it yet. Neither game is a viable candidate for GOTY with failures in gameplay 101.

Examples: control/alt/shift click units in civ IV, siege moving when the GUI displays "ranged attack" in V. It is not the ONLY problem with controls in either case (raise your hand if you like declaring war on someone by accident without prompt. Come on. Any takers?), but they're glaring examples.

Sc2 reworked unit balance and added a much heavier dose of SP than sc1 had, but by and large the game is similar in the MP arena.

GOTY =/= revolutionary title of the year. It is GAME of the year. Games that haven't even polished basic gameplay elements have no place being considered. It is an insult to players and to the developers of polished games that Civ V is even considered for GOTY. It also rewards failure, which does *not* encourage a change in pattern. I want civ V to be good, hence I am VERY annoyed that gamespy dared give it consideration, let alone an award, in its present form. It's a joke.

Well, Civ V is definitely the best PC game I've bought this year.

But given it's the only game I've bought this year, that's hardly a glowing review. It would seem that 'PC game of the year' would be a rather odd title to win, given the very numerous complaints about the game.

ok despite your considerable use of caps, a few balance tweaks and a singleplayer option doesnt make sc2 anything special.

i agree goty is a funny title for civ5, but nothing better has been mentioned

Every game with polished controls and balanced options beat it. So does every RPG/other genre that works w/o bugs or control issues. There's no point in mentioning ALL of them, since a good chunk of console releases and even things like MINECRAFT have better control schemes.

But you can't come up with a counter-argument, or don't want to, so I don't see the point of arguing with you further. If all you can do is disagree w/o supporting statements, your side of this debate hangs an L.

Civ5 is as much game of the year as was Failout 3. Money talks, people are being taught that turd is new chocolate.

What a sick joke naming Failure 5 as the game of the year.

Do not reward mediocrity!

This award must be so that civ5 can sell a GOTY edition somewhere down the road? I don't know how it happened, but every second game these days ends up with a GOTY at some point.

I think your mom is slightly off. The most beautiful, talented, cute, smart etc etc kid in the world is my son. I'm sure you're a close second, though

When I accidentally shot a city state worker full of arrows instead of capturing him I just shrugged my shoulders and reloaded while making a cup of tea. Some people just don't think such things are massively important.
It would be my game of the year as I'm not a gamer.

so, as there may be lots of problems with it, i do play ciV more than any other pc game. that being said, i would say it would be my pc game of the year.

Mass Effect 2 crushes Civ 5 in that it is actually fun and not broken.

I am disappoint.

And insulted.

I'm pretty much in agreement with a lot of the people here. It's not a bad game, and do play it and have good fun with it, but it should not be game of the year, just because of the ridiculous bugs and control issues in it. I'm a regular apologist for the AI just because I recognize the difficulty in creating a good AI for this type of game, but the pure gameplay issues are too numerous to count.

Just looking back at my last game, I actually had an enemy archer stay alive in a city I just took over for a turn, and fire on and kill one of my units in the IBT time. That's just ridiculous, and it's just at the front of the line of other issues like the strange ways in which the units move through/stop in/fail to stop in empty cities and city governors making bizarre decisions which prevent a city from ever growing, even with happiness to spare. If you can look past the issues, there's still a lot of good stuff, and an enjoyable enough game, but there's no way it's the best game this year.

I am in shock. I'm already skeptical at professional reviewers after seeing Civ 5 the final product... and this GOTY title now completely discredits the GOTY title (and the entire publication!) for me as well.
