3.13 - Game crashes after start up.

Yeah, for some reason it appears that if you do "Base Install" -> "Patch to 3.03" -> "Patch to 3.13" it doesn't work, but if you do "Base Install" -> "Patch to 3.13", it does. Not sure what 3.03 did that's causing the problems, but I'm pretty sure that's the cause.

I tried several patch strategies, both 3.03 > 3.13 and 3.00 > 3.13, with the same lack of success.

You can't have done 3.00 -> 3.13 if it thinks you have 3.03 installed. :)

I said I had tried uninstalling and reinstalling many times, in many ways, trying to isolate the problem. It so happens that the last time, last night, I installed the 3.03 patch so that I could play the game. This morning, I tried applying the 3.13 patch again, but it evidently did not take.

I am now starting completely from scratch: first Civ4 Vanilla, in the middle of installing Warlords now, and when it's complete, I'll install BtS, then patch it to 3.13, if I can.

Stay tuned.

So, after reinstalling from scratch Civ4, Warlords, BtS, I opened the game (3.0.0.86) and tried to check for updates, but it couldn't find any. I find that rather strange. Could it be a clue?

Then I downloaded the patch from CivFanatics and applied it manually.

Then I tried to open the game, but got nothing. The init.log did not reflect any change, i.e., it didn't register the update, probably because the post-patch game did not initialize.

How did you uninstall the game? If you just delete the directory, then all of the registry settings for the game will still exist. So the game will "think" that you have 3.13 installed because it has registry settings for it.

You also need to remove the My Games folders.

You also need to remove the My Games folders.

Just to be on the safe side, make sure you remove BOTH My Games folders:

(1) the one at C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Games

(2) the one at C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\My Games

Note that (1) has your CustomAssets and saved games, and (2) has your profiles and cache.

Also manually delete C:\Program Files\Firaxis\... of course, too.

Uninstall/reinstall #7 following all the recommendations above (thanks, ori, Bh, jray and Methos), i.e., removing all traces of Civ4 from every possible location, including the Firaxis folder, then starting over.

This time I was able to download the 3.13 patch from the game's Advanced menu, but after the patch ran, the game would not initialize and consequently the log reflected only the 3.0086 version, as before.

Bummer... I wonder if there are still some Civ files lurking in the registry screwing things up. I'm not an expert with the registry though, so I'll defer to other folks for further suggestions.

Oh, and just a reality check, but you did uninstall from either Add/Remove Programs or the Start Menu before manually deleting stuff, right?

From the Add/Remove Programs dialog, followed by manual deletions in various places. Sorry I didn't mention this earlier.

It still thinks that you have 3.03 :crazyeye:

I have different problems but this seems to be good place to ask.

I have installed patch V3.13, no problems/errors. And now the questions:

1) How I can see that installation went OK, meaning that I haven't seen any version identification/number at any starting pages (I think any how that installation was OK beacuse culture points were missing with some icons, but got back after installing "unofficial patch fix patch")?

2) Haven't seen any list of fixes, can anybody give me a pointter?

Adv. thanks

Wenla

1) open the game, click on Advanced then on About this Build - if it says 3.13 version you are ok :)
2)look here

1) Seems to OK like I was supposing

2) Seems to be many enhancements for performance, but none of those helped in my (and some other's) case...

Thank's ori

Similar problems - 3.03 to 3.13 which remains un-updated, random crashes loading maps, worldbuilder is screwed, etc... Anyway the culprit seems to be the installer itself, which is ignoring the install path and instead just using whatever it feels is gravy. My main game is installed on D: thus where the patch should install correct? Wrong. The patch was installed to C:, of course I wasn't given an option to choose either - which doesn't remedy the situation any. I've never had the game installed to C: either, but I'm digging through the registry now to figure out if its pulling it from elsewhere.

Update: The only reference to c: I could find was the uninstall info for the patch itself. So my guess is the installer is defaulting to %PROGRAMFILES%

The problem is indeed a crappy installer routine (basically they just hardcoded a few install paths relevant to the various BtS versions instead of querying the windows registry). I am not sure how it looks like but basically the installer should create the file structure it needs by itself so it might be possible to just copy the stuff the patch dumped on c: to your actual install to patch but it is a :smoke: move by Firaxis/Take2 and it is one of a few things that should have made them patch their patch already :gripe:

That was my original plan to copy the files over, but the game wouldn't start at all then. So I replaced the original structure, and started the installer from the in-game update. Well its not relying on %programs%, thats for sure. This time when it run it started dumping files in C:\WINDOWS!!! LOL I got that killed before it done any damage, but decided to just be safe and do the whole routine over. Vanilla -> BtS -> 3.13 ... seems to work.

Oh yea I had to purge all the uninstall entries for 3.13 from the registry as well, before applying that patch. But the uninstaller was crashing for some reason, I think thats something on my end though.

In my case, none of my Civ4 installations were to custom locations. I accepted all the defaults. So the patch should have had no problems.
