What about Canturbury Tales? It was a watershed in early English literature. Chaucer wrote it in English at at time when the court and nobility all spoke French.
Some important renaissance works would be good to, Shakespeare, Petrarch, the Decameron by Boccaccio...Actually I could use some of these for my mod set in the Renaissance...
