IGN PC announced Gauls, Carthaginians, Arabs and Ottomans as 4 of the new civs (PTW). Everybody announced the Vikings, Spanish, Mongols, Koreans and Celts would probably be in. That makes 9, and still lets the Incas out. Speculating about it, I would say:

If it was up to me, I would chose:

Arabs
Carthaginians
Celts
Incas
Mongols
Ottomans
Spanish
Vikings

But looking at Civilization's historic, I would say their choices probably will be:

Carthaginians
Celts
Gauls
Koreans
Mongols
Ottomans
Spanish
Vikings

Any thoughts or ideas?

Cheers!

somebody said somewhere that celts was the equal of gauls. Maybe yes because in all the civilizations there the celts I really don't know what they suppose to be.

P.S.: sorry but celts remind me nothing
or ING PC was wrong simply

I think the Gauls have lots in common with the French (they are their ancestors!). It would be like having the Romans and the Italians...

And I regret the lack of a South American civ - the Incas would be a good fit.

I am not stupid I know all the others civilizations except the celts but I just want to know what they suppose to be?

Can somoene is able to explain me a little?...please

ôåóôåñ, ðëåáóå å÷øèóå ìå, the shame of it!
I thought the inclusion of the Koreans and the Vikings was bad enough...now we're going to have Gauls instead of Celts. So long as they call the Turks Turks and not Ottomans.

The little poeple of the gauls became the fabulous, fantastic and powerfull nation of France:king:

Vive la France!!!! et chantons tous en coeur la Marseillaise

Celts were people from northwestern europe in Roman times, I think. They were spread from France to the British Islands, maybe Germany as well. Don't know them too well, neither...

I watchin in the dictionary and they (celts) are living in europe and destroy in part by the romains. They go in the north of europe and they were spread by the germains (barbarians) in the islands of england and irland. They survive only on irland.
They are the ancestors of irland' poeple in some way.

Not very glorious civilization I must say;)

Although your language is unclear, it is untrue to say that the Celts survive only in Ireland. They survive in Wales, Scotland and France (Brittany) as well. A summary of how the Celts or any other civ declined is not enough to justify the statement "Not very glorious civilization I must say".

And FYI England is not an island.

Who would be the leader of the Gauls, if not Asterix! :) And special unit would be Obelix, right?

Hmm, the most famous real Gaul was Vecingetorix, I think...he almost defeated the Romans and was so close to capture the city of Rome, but his barbarian hordes was too interested in looting and scavanging to see the main goal :)

If you don't like my humor don't read it and my statement on the fact that they only survive in ireland it true because their culture remind more far away than any place in europe. My source was the dictionary then I have all right sorry for you ( pardon my poor english but I don't care about it because most of the poeple are able to understand me)

Finally, the Spanish and Mongols make it in, but the Arabs/Caliphate are still out...whose bright idea was it to leave out 3 of the 5 greatest empires of all time?

And I don't have a problem with the Turks being called the Ottomans, since the other civs have followed the same trend (being named after a specific empire instead of a culture)

The name "Gauls" refers to the Celtic people that lived in what is now modern France and Belgium in ancient times. They arrived there sometime around 1000BC and remained there until their people and culture were absorbed under the Romans in the first few centuries AD. The Germanic invasions that began around 300AD changed Roman "Gaul" into "France." The Gauls disappeared, but the culture and language of the Celts survive to the modern day in Brittany, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.

So there are not 9 civs, as the Celts and Gauls are actually the same civilization. It would make more sense to refer to them as "Celts" than "Gauls", as that denominates a larger group that has had more historical impact, but either way it's the same group the Civ3 designers are referring to.

But Gaul is not the same as France at all; the Gauls were about as closely related to the modern French as the Aztecs were to modern people of Mexico. :)

It's a good thing we can add civs ourselves. Some of these choices are laughable. Koreans? A civilization? Give me a break - I have no problem adding small municipalities to the list but work on the bigger stuff first. Kind of irks me that they include Korea of all places but no Incans. Aside from historical perpective standpoint, look at game balance on a world map. Not a single civ in S. America, and then China, Japan, and Korea sandwiched in there.

As for the Gauls, we already have France, what the hell? Why don't they add Italy and five or more incarnations of China for each dynasty while they're at it? I don't really have a problem with adding any of these civs, but when they have a very limited number that they're putting in there and this is what they come up with I wonder who's setting the priorities.

I think the list of civs is very good, I think it's just that the names aren't right. Firaxis is using the names of states or small subgroups instead of more broad cultures. The Carthaginians should be Phonecians, the Gauls should be Celts, the Ottomans should be the Turks. These names are more recognizable for the most part, more general, and still encompass the states/groups represented in the original names. This takes exactly five minutes to fix in the editor, though, so it isn't that big of a deal.

I am fine with the selection, althought would have liked to see a Turk Or Arab civ among them, if they are already not in.

I think it is pretty certain (based on a variety of sources from E3) that we are getting:

Arabs
Carthaginians
Gauls
Koreans
Mongols
Ottomans
Spanish
Vikings
