A huge ~630MB update. What did it contain?

Well, I've sent you a PM and a link RAH, nice to see you anyway.

mosphet, that's news to me. I've not seen any other reports of broken saves. Has anyone else seen that problem?

Yes, I can not open any previous saves before the update. I had a nice game going too.

not only is it 630 mb, but steam also wants to download it for civ4, civ4 bts and civ4col.

what a mess. haha

I believe I found what my problem is anyway. I always play with lock modified assets on. The error message was complaining about modified assets in the mods folder after the patch.

I still don't know why that caused the game to crash...

That could be. I was playing with LMA on as well for a HOF challenge map, and the saves I tried to load had LMA on too. And I know if I generate maps with LMA on, I get a HOF error message saying that the games aren't valid for the HOF.

If you don't want to play online MP, don't download the patch! It removes Direct IP, breaks PB and just changes from GameSpy to Steamworks. Oh, and a spelling correction and some font changes. Workaround for Steam users playing PB is here

The worst insult to injury is Steam asking CD users to email them to request their crippling patch so they can play with their Steam counterparts. Sorry I'm not going to beg a DRM company to break my game, thanks.

Barring the shortcut. Either I have to pick this horrible option or plead with my friends to pay for the game again in CD format. Still think you own your game when purchasing it on Steam?

This topic reminds me of why I hate Steam and what it's done to PC gaming...

If I have the Steam version of Civ IV, is there any way to get mods working? Fall From Heaven 2, Fairy Tail, and event BAT are all dead for me now... I can play vanillia BtS, but whenever I try to load a mod, it exits as normal, but it doesn't reboot the game with the mod. Instead, the process just keeps running, but nothing ever happens.

What we should do is send them pictures of our Steam accounts with Civ IV and ask them to send us a hard copy of the game.

But...but...isn't mod support one of the 'benefits' Steam fans are always pointing to when they are saying that even though Steam is DRM it is 'good DRM since it is by gamers for gamers'?

I haven't looked at the work around referenced above, since I don't need it myself...but if it is what I'd guess it is it should solve all Steam related problems for Civ IV in one swoop.

I am sorry to say that, but best solution seem to be get Civ4 on cd from Amazon and forget about Steam (at least for this game).

I'd happily try it if I knew someone in proximity with a non-Steam version of Civ4. Luckily, I'm moving at the end of the month... My father has a non-Steam version of the game. I'll just have to ask him about it after I move.

I hate to say it - but I told you so many many times... ;)
And how I have been bashed for it by the STEAM lobbyist faction around here!

I think it will be difficult for any of the loyalists to support this giant cluster.
but it could be fun to watch them try.

I must say, I'm very glad to see a community that doesn't blindly worship Steam... I swear, Steam users are practically cult-like with how they react to any complaints about it. This makes me very tempted to be more active on these forums.

I guess I am glad I don't play multiplayer... I have not had problems with the mods either. I am neutral to the steam issues, are people really arguing about it? I think it is the way everything is headed, like it or not. No physical transaction, all electronic.

That may well be the way we are headed...which is all the more reason to fight Valve at every turn. If they are allowed to have their way with their dirty marketing and digital distribution does indeed become the only option that leaves us all stuck with Steam. There was a day when no one really worried about Microsoft's tactics, and by the time anyone started it was too late for even an anti-trust action to restore competitiveness to the market. We need to learn from our mistakes, not repeat them.

:hmm:

I've actually never met a group of fellows so uniformly anti-Steam, I have to say. I've fought this fight before on this forum. I can understand the reasoning, but I don't buy it.

No fun at all. As evidenced, the loyalist comes along, ignores the entire topic, and writes off all complaints as just 'people being anti Steam'.

I would greatly prefer if I was allowed to speak for myself.

I never dismissed your complaints. In some form, they have merit.

Now, whether I buy into them or not is an entirely different story.
