I want to buy some goods films so i've decided to open this thread to concentrate some suggestions.

I would prefer to see the films divided in different categories and over all recent films (90s 2000s)

it might help if you gave some examples of movies you enjoyed

it might help if you gave some examples of movies you enjoyed

Hystory films in particular like THE LAST SAMURAI, 300 and THE GLADIATOR

Also sci-fi and horror are good. I am now seeing Star Ship Troopers and soon i will buy Serenity

Scratch my question, some films I recommend to own (unless already seen too often)

RomCom:
Father of the Bride 1 and 2
While Your Were Sleeping
French Kiss
Beautiful Girls

Action:
Aliens (the second)
Boondock Saints
Sin City
Face Off

Drama:
Vanilla Skies (or the -better- original Abre Los Ojos)
Das Boot
A Few Good Men
Steel Magnolias (because you have to own at least one Julia Roberts flick)

Comedy:
The Princess Bride
Shawn of the Dead

Fantasy/SciFi:
LotR, duh
Stardust
The Fifth Element
Starship Troopers
Willow
EDIT: gah! missed Serenity

Heist:
Ocean´s 12 was the best of the three imho

Documentary:
Shut Up and Sing (unless you absolutely detest country-ish music)
When We Were Kings (Ali vs. Frasier and some American history thrown in)
Supersize Me

by no means a complete list, just off the top of my head

no what is it?

Lord Of The Rings, The Departed, Children of Men, Anchorman, Talledega Nights, Superbad, Saving Private Ryan, Blood Diamond, Boondock Saints, and Gladiator.

Hystory films in particular like THE LAST SAMURAI, 300 and THE GLADIATOR

I'd call that the fantasy genre, but whatever.

You'd probably like Hero with Jet Li. Also check out Sin City it's from the same guy who made 300.

Tier 1:

Drama: The Shawshank Redemption
American Beauty
Whisper of the Heart

Biography/Drama: Jarhead

Crime/Drama: Lord of War

Sci-Fi: A Clockwork Orange
Blade Runner

Action: Batman Begins
Spirited Away

Tier 2:

Action: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Princess Mononoke
Gladiator

Sci-Fi: Children of Men

Drama: My Neighbor Totoro

Tier 3:

Drama: Gandhi
One Flew Over the ****oo's Nest
Hotel Rwanda
Syriana

Crime/Drama: The Silence of the Lambs
Pulp Fiction

Sci-Fi: Metropolis

Have more if you need them, but those are enough to get you started. The only films on this list pre 90's are Blade Runner (80's), Clockwork Orange (70's I believe) and Metropolis (20's). And Gandhi and Whisper of the Heart are 80's I believe, but the latter is animated anyways. While Metropolis may be too much of a turnoff because of age Blade Runner and Clockwork are musts, and you will not care when they were made once you see them. Enjoy. Films are one of my favorite hobbies!

Love me if you dare, brilliant French movie

I also recommend, Le Granda Voyage and Chicago. We cant forget Tarzan, the Lion King, Kingdom of Heaven, 300, Letters from Iwo Jima, Flags of our fathers and dirty dancing

City of God, the 40 year old virgin, superbad, half baked, Shaun of the Dead. + Nearly every thing anyone has mentioned here that I have seen ( about 3/4s ) I think were really good.

The main thing with movies, as with games. Is that they are recommended by people with similar taste :)
