A president with alzeimers

Ed Meese says it's crap, and it's Meese's word over the guy that danced in his underwear on TV (and I don't mean his ballet performances.)

So you prefer to believe someone proven to lack any form of ethics at all? :crazyeye:

I found the book. I will copy exactly what it says

Shortly after Reagan went public with his illness, Dr. Steven Miles. a professor of geriatric medicine at the University of Minnesota, published an article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune in which he said that he had suspected that Reagan was already in the early stages of Alzheimer's during his presidency. "We were concerned by the increasing vagueness of his presidency, his inability to speak lucidly outside of brief, tightly controlled settings," Miles wrote, adding that he and other geriatricians had even considered making a public appeal for an examination of Reagan to see if he was suffering from Alzheimer's -- but that they ultimately decided not to, "given White House medical reports that all was well."

And this

Is it possible that Reagan slipped into Alzheimer's disease while still president? Many experts say yes -- the onset of the disease is so gradual that a person can have it for years before doctors or even family remembers recognize it for what it is. "Once a diagnosis is made, it's impossible to say how long a person has had it," says geriatrician Dr. Cheryl Woodson.

Sounds like Obama might have it. Too bad I can't get a book published, or else it would constitute concrete evidence that he does.

There was more in the book. But its very long to type.

:goodjob: I think my cat has Alzheimers. I have written a one page book about it, so it is obviously true. :p

Regardless of whether he did or not, he was still a terrible president.

What is surprising is the conservative types who argue that Reagan did not have Alzeimers while in office, how do you know by the sound of it he was never checked for Alzeimers while in office.
Know what Alzeimers is, oh yes, my grandmother died of it, and yes she had moments when she was semi lucid.

But, having a bloke with polio with his finger on the button compared to one with Alzheimers
I would take the one with polio it does not eat the brain away.

And yes Alzeimers is an absolute horror, what we would do for a faithful dog we cannot do to help a loved relative.

This, oh so very much this. Unless the Polio is interfering with the Presidents ability to govern (i.e. he's bed-ridden for the 4 years in hospital) then it should have no impact on governance, but having someone who doesn't have the mental capacity to govern due to illness will.

Also agree on the absolute horror of Alzheimer's, had an Aunt suffer from it for ten years before dying.

Well, at least we know the vast majority disagree with you on this. I happen to think he was a great president. Top 10 at a minimum, if not in the top 5.

What does that have to do with him having it or not? Everyone over the age of 60 or so should have it as part of their standard checkup routine....it doesnt mean you have it.

In regards to Polio, or any other debilitating disease, its just a simple fact that any such disease that casues undue pain and discomfort is going to have an effect on a person mentally and psychologically.

And fwiw, some variations of Polio do indeed 'eat the brain away' as well attacking more than just the spine, but the brain and brain stem itself. Just sayin.

Ed Meese: "[doctors] were particularly careful to do all kinds of tests about his memory and his mental condition, particularly looking for any signs of deterioration of his mental condition..."

What are we disagreeing about? Meese is an authoritarian with no ethics. His words are are not to be respected or trusted by anyone. By the article you linked, he was a Stalinst on matters of law, rejecting all American tradition. He was involved in the Iran-Contra scandal as a key participant. His Meese Report was a deliberate rejection of ethical actions to support a political ideology.

If you are not assuming this man is lying, then you are not paying attention to who that man is.

As of last decade, there's no 'test' for Alzheimer's. We test for Alzheimer's during the autopsy. This is obviously even more true during the 80s.

What we test for in patients is dementia or cognitive deficit or declining cognitive ability.

Just FYI
