No, the term african american refers to the ethnicity of the descendents of the american slaves. That's different from someone who comes from Africa, (and the term isn't used as such) or calling someone black.

I think Skads point was that you can indeed be a white person in appearance and still be a decendent of american slaves.

I thought the one drop rule was obsolete. Anyway, it's not simply a matter of having a fraction of blood, but identifying with the culture, really.

Its actually neither - but a simple fact of who your ancestors were and your line of decendency.

For example, I do have some part heritage in me from the Cherokee....but I look nothing like an american indian...but it doesnt change the fact that I can trace part of my heritage back to some native american origins. In that regard, I am as much an native american as anyone else who claims that title.

Actually my point was aimed at the south African whites who come over and are actual African Americans. But you very right in your point. African American refers to blacks. Period. An immigrant from Africa who was never a decedents from slaves is still considered an African American. As to are the decedents of non-slave black Americans from the same time. Not all blacks were slaves some free blacks were even slave owners them selves. There was a good number of Moorish Spaniards in the New Orleans area during that time. They were black free and not from Africa yet their direct decedents would be called African Americans.

The term "african-american" is an useless PC construct and life would be easier if we could call a spade a spade.

A white South African who emmigrates to the US is indeed many times more "african-american" than an american-born black guy will ever be (unless he emmigrates to Africa and becomes an "american-african").

Unlike you, I don't go for wit, because I don't find myself witty. Maybe you like to repeat the "thanks for playing, , rofl, /sheesh," and whatever it is you do these days, but another hint to you would be is that repeating the same stuff over and over again isn't very witty either.
