Aabra02: Hammy Builds a House

Hey! Since so many of my friends are in this game, I just had to take this opportunity to announce I finally got my first Emperor solo win, Chinese domination in 1380, std continents map. :)

A big THANK YOU to Bede for his infinite patience teaching me so much about all areas of Civ. Thanks also to Scout for some of his warmongering tricks I used in this game. And appreciation to all of you who have given me tips, suggestions and morale support in the 3 years it's taken me to finally manage this. :thanx:

Now, back to your regularly scheduled progra...er...game. :p

Congrats! I hit the same milestone myself not too long ago.

Awesomeness Gram!!

"Got it", but I have questions (as usual).

I don't know what's up next for the workers: iron (my pick), mountain or irrigations, but I do know that we'll starve the city down at some point, for shields. Also, on the long run, we have 2 plain tiles that could use a mine: 1 food cost for 2 shields is better than 2 food cost (1 citizen requires 2 food but gathers 0 on the mountain tile, thus the cost) for 3 shields until there is coal or uranium over the peak.

Does "iron" mean roading as quickly as possible toward the iron with all workers, planning to then establish a colony? If so, should they be covered with a bow or spear? Does the team have any other first preference?

Philo due in 6, got 94g -15gpt meaning we won't be bankrupt until after we have got our tech(s?).

If we're first to Philo, we want Lit for free, right? then what to research? If not first, then research Lit anyway. I'll continue pre-building GLib with Pyramids. If anyone else gets them before we get Lit, what to dump our shields into? MoM won't be available until we have Philo.

Do we want to trade writing to Abu for Poly +25g? wait until he has more gold? other plan?

I'll continue exploring with the curraghs. Are we more interested in the shape of our continent or making suicide runs in likely spots to contact other civs?

I'll wait to play until I have more team input. Working with only 1 city has me completely out of my comfort zone. :crazyeye:

Cover with a spear and use one worker. And keave the spear to cover the colony.

I forget what other wonders are available for dumping

Can we trade Poly to anybody? The trade rules still apply

The basics still apply regardless of the comfort zone.

No, we can't, as the Celts already have Poly, we can afford it (via trade), but don't need it UNLESS...

There are no other wonders currently available with the techs we know, and a regular lib or temple cost less than the shields we've already collected (57). However, if the Pyramids were built before we reach Philo (and the MoM), we could make the trade to Abu of Writing for Poly +gold and switch the pre-build to the Temple of Artemis. If that happened, I could go into the Big Picture to make the trade and switch the build (I think).

Would losing the shields already invested the GLib pre-build qualify as "needing it" under the Bede rules of trading? How badly do we need the GLib...or how badly do we want it?

IMO, avoiding a waste of 57 (or 57+) shields by avoiding a wonder cascade qualifies as "needing" a tech. I don't know if you need to trade for it immediately, and if you have any luck the liferafts, you may be able to get a better deal.

Speaking of rafts, as much as we'd like to know who's on the other continent, seems to me that getting our own continent's contours would take priority. We don't even know if it's just the 3 of us on this side of the pond.

That's what I was thinking re the wonder cascade. There's no immediate need unless I get the notice that a civ has completed the Pyramids.

OTOH, we will be almost totally broke by the time we discover Philo...unless we can disperse enough barb camps. Since Brennus already has Writing, I don't want to wait until Abu can buy it from the Celts. However, I think our city placement will prevent them from meeting each other until Map Making. I don't seem to recall seeing the AI build curraghs, but maybe I just haven't been paying attention.

We don't even know if it's just the 3 of us on this side of the pond.
You have a good point there! We have 4 curraghs. If the barbs don't sink any, maybe 2 of them could make a run. I'll see how it looks.

I won't be playing this until tonight, so if anyone else has thoughts.....

Edit: Much later. Playing now. :D

I'm on turn 6 and need team input on what to research next. I'll post my log to date so you can see the trades I've made and the save if anyone wants to take a look.

Turn 0 - Preflight

Everything looks fine. Hit <enter>

IBT - Barb galley sinks while attacking our curragh which becomes a vet. We get a nice facade on our palace.

1) - 975bc - Curraghs and bows explore.

IBT - nada

2) - 950 bc - Workers finish mining hill, begin roading. Western bowman spots another barb camp. Curraghs explore.

IBT - Abu demands writing...I reluctantly cave. We sink a barb galley.

3) - 925bc - Arabia now has Maths. More exploring. Lower sci to 50%, Philo still in 3 at -9gpt.

IBT - lots of barb movement.

4) - 900bc - 2 workers begin irrigating grass tile, 1 sent toward west for roading to iron along with a spear.

IBT - nada

5) - 875bc - We disperse Seljuk barb camp for 25g. Worker and spear move into position to begin iron road. Curraghs explore. Philo due next turn, 56 gold in treasury at -9.

IBT - Abu asks us to move our boat...sure. Philo comes in and we get Lit for our free tech.

Go into Big Picture and trade Philo +1g to Brennus for HBR. Trade Philo and HBR to Abu for Math +50g. Trade Math to Brennus for Poly + 102g. Begin research on ??? With 198 in treasury, COL in 15 at -15g, Currency 24, Map Making 18.

6) - 850bc - Send 2 workers to begin mining plains. One worker begins roading toward iron. One of our western curraghs sinks barb galley. Eastern curraghs see more of Arab coast.

Oh, and I still need to reset Babylon the the GLib. Will do that first thing when I go back to the game.

I set research on CoL, but we have no beakers invested yet. Lux is at 30%, so the -15g is the fastest we can research anything. I'd usually pick Currency as a tech not often researched early by the AI, but 24 turns??? I need advice from the team.

lurker's comment: I might not have gone for Lit as the freebie. It's a realatively cheap tech, and the AI tend to avoid it. I believe that it might have been a better idea to go to diplomacy BEFORE taking the free tech, trading Philo for Math, taking Construction as the freebie, and then making a run for Lit. With the headstart on building the GLib, you would have had excellent odds of snagging it anyway. Regardless, an entertaining game so far. :goodjob:

Checking in... I've been pretty swamped with RL this week, but it brought me some good news; I now have only one more requirement to meet in order to finish the certification I started last december.

I'll catch up with the thread later today and play this over the weekend.

I had originally declared it a skip, but if y'all'd rather call it a swap so that scout can get a turnset in over the weekend, it's fine by me.

@gma -- looks like a fine round of trading that you did there! The AI usually researches Map Making before Currency, but I might rather research MM now, for several reasons. (1) It's cheaper than Currency and will come in 6 turns earlier; (2) there's a wonder attached to it that might keep us from losing tons of shields in a cascade; and (3) once you start researching it, even if an AI gets it first, you might be able to buy it somewhat cheaper and still avoid that cascade; and (4) it'll help us set ourselves up as the tech broker.

@scout -- congratulations on that certification!

@gma-Go back to zero research until you build up a kitty. You did a fine job getting to reasonable parity with the AI so I don't see a real need to chase expensive tech with our weaker economy. Let them do the research for you.

@SimpleMonkey - sometimes strategy trumps beakers. You are absolutely right in terms of raw beaker cost but finishing the GreatLib in good time will return far more than just the beakers, and it will bring us the beakers foregone by choosing Lit.

@gma-Go back to zero research until you build up a kitty.

Will do! :)

@Aabra - I think Map Making is already out there someplace, else I think the barbs wouldn't have galleys. It's probably on the other continent, but maybe we can get there before too long, or there may be another civ hidden somewhere on our continent.
