Aabra02: Hammy Builds a House

Cont'd from the IBT where we got Philo and Lit:

IBT - Abu asks us to move our boat...sure. Philo comes in and we get Lit for our free tech. Go into Big Picture and trade Philo +1g to Brennus for HBR. Trade Philo and HBR to Abu for Math +50g. Trade Math to Brennus for Poly + 102g. Begin 0 research on CoL With 198g in treasury and +5gpt.

6) - 850bc - Send 2 workers to begin mining plains. One worker begins roading toward iron. One of our western curraghs sinks barb galley. Eastern curraghs see more of Arab coast. Change production to the GLib in 13.

IBT - Celts plant Cataractonium on the desert land bridge between their land and ours.

7) - 825bc - Move our warrior out of Cataractonium's borders. Worker begin mining plains tile. Exploring.

IBT - nada

8) - 800bc - Working and exploring.

IBT - nada

9) - 775bc - Move iron-roading worker west 1 tile. One of our eastern curraghs ends up right next to a barb galley.

IBT - One of our eastern curraghs is sunk by barb galley. One of our western curraghs sinks a barb galley. Arab settler pair comes into view from the northeast. Celts plant a town 2 tiles west of OUR iron.

10) - 750bc - 2 workers mining other plains tile, other working roading. One of the western curraghs sinks another barb galley.

Afterturn notes: Babylon is now up to 20spt, taking a turn off the GLib...now due in 8.

I moved our barb-hunting Bow in the east back toward home if you want to try some settler dancing...not sure we have enough units for that or if we even want to keep them away, as their town will become ours eventually.

Unfortunately, the eastern galley we lost was the one farthest east, so the other will have to cover the same territory again before seeing anything new on Arab coast.

We're now making +6gpt with 219 in the Treasury, and still 30% lux.

No new trades available. We still have a monopoly on Lit.

If we want to establish a colony on the closest iron, we're going to have take out the Celt town before it expands to cover the iron.

think about and discuss that one a bit. Any shot at taking that town right after it expands? Do you have the units and techs to do that? Too soon for the GA? Do you have ponies?

@scout, I prolly shouldn't ask, but WTH, what are you now certified for? Diety level combined arms?

@SimpleMonkey - sometimes strategy trumps beakers. You are absolutely right in terms of raw beaker cost but finishing the GreatLib in good time will return far more than just the beakers, and it will bring us the beakers foregone by choosing Lit.

lurker's comment: Ah, and by grabbing the GLib you end up with Currency as well as every other AA tech (plus a few MidA as well) all for free. I've been playing Demigod and trying to get by on my trading skills alone, no GLib ever. I'm continually trying to be in a strong position with techs at the start of the MidA, thus the strategy mentioned. Thank you, Bede. I now stop hijacking this thread. Carry on!

I just grabbed the save... playing shortly.

@Abra: I'm sorry I triggered a skip, for some reason I didn't catch that in the thread... I saw your PM and thought I was 'up'.

Through a little bit of MMing I was able to snag the Great Library a turn earlier. I think we can just barely snag the Mausoleum of Mausollos in 9 turns using a little creative starvation. If we manage to snag it we would probably be able to ratchet the lux tax down a notch or two and afford more troops.

The Celts queue'd up MoM in the IBT, but in Alesia, not Entremont.

Map Making will come in the next IBT... but I don't know if we need a boat in the water immediately, as a scouting curraugh just spotted another landmass.

I could also queue up a Library and complete it in 2 turns...which might put some cultural pressure on an arab town nearby... but I don't know if we want to spend the GPT on maintaining a standard Library just yet.

What is the pleasure of the team? Shall we try to snag the dead dudes tomb?

Pre-flight check: GLib in 8... MM the citizen off the wheat and onto a mined hill gets us 22spt and GLib in 7. It's a starvation diet, but I think the granary will hold just enough. I wonder if we ought to sell off the granary...

Hmmm.... research at zero... wonder if we ought to take that up a notch. I'll leave it at zero research for the moment.

IBT - The Arabs found Aden between the bananas and gems in the jungle north of Babylon. I wonder if we can get that to flip. :p

Turn 1/730 BC - take a bowman to go play whack-a-barb in the west... bring the nearby one homeward in case someone gets froggy again. I think I'm going to take these curraughs on a suicide run here in a few turns. GLib in 6

Celts know Map Making, and won't trade it at any price.

IBT - a curraugh sinks a barbarian galley.

Turn 2/710 GLib in 5.

Turn 3/690 BC - Oh wow, I didn't notice that worker mining the plains. The combination of that finishing IBT and the citizen on the hill took us to -3fpt, 23spt. GLib in 4. :)

Turn 4/670 BC - GLib in 3. Take 2 curraughs on a suicide run.

IBT - Both suicide curraughs sink, but that takes us to +8gpt.

Turn 5/650 BC - The price for maps drops to Literature +30g...since Arabia now knows the tech. I think that's an awfully steep price to pay for a civ that's 2 turns from finishing the GLib, what do you think, team? I take Babylon off the starvation diet, since it won't shave anything off the build.

IBT - the English complete ToA... ruh-roh...Arabia queues up GLight... I hope there isn't a cascade coming.

ToE.jpg

Turn 6/630 BC - our Curraugh spots a coastal tile that looks like a new landmass.

IBT - Our westward Bowman is promoted to Veteran defending against a barb warrior and horseman. The Great Library comes in

GLib.jpg

Celts queue up MoM in Alesia.

Turn 7/620 - Queue up Mausoleum of Mausollos in Babylon... and ask the team for input.

IBT -
Maps.jpg

Turn 8/590 BC - Now at the critical point... I can build a Library or Curraugh without wasting shields... so wait for the team's input.

Actually... there's nothing that says I *must* play 10 turns... maybe I'll just call this a set and let the team discuss what to do next.

Here's >>>>> The Save <<<<<

Nice turns, Scout. :goodjob:

We lost 2 rafts, so I say put a couple more boats in the water. Let's maximize value out of the GLib by getting as many contacts as possible.

I'd agree about the contacts, but it sounds like there was one curragh left.

If that curragh has found the other continent, we wouldn't necessarily need more boats.

Whether to build a regular lib or the MoM, I'm not sure. One would increase our happiness and save slider cash, the other would increase our rate of self-research.

Have we decided whether or not we're going for 20K? I can't recall how much cpt MoM generates.

I think I'm just babbling here without knowing what I'm talking about. :crazyeye:

Spotting the other continent isn't the same as making it across, though. And one curragh circling the other continent to make contacts could well be sunk by a barb galley.

Have we decided whether or not we're going for 20K? I can't recall how much cpt MoM generates.
Dunno. AFAIK, we haven't chosen a VC yet. With a variant this far out of my comfort zone, I could try any one of 'em. Thoughts, team?

It's not so great from a culture standpoint... only 2 cp/turn... but it's also fairly cheap as wonders go, at 200 shields.... so on a shield/culture point it's not so bad.

My thinking in stopping and asking is this: It's good for 3 content citizens. That should let us drop the lux tax... perhaps substantially.

If we want to keep 20k open as an option we should probably build a Library before we need it... as that is indeed some good culture for us. An "ancient" library making 6cpt is better than many wonders.

One built City is a natural for a 20K culture victory. Capturing additional towns for resources and financial support is useful but not mandatory.

If the consensus is play for a 20K then the MoM has some utility above the added happiness, though with the current resource situation having some extra happy is not to be sneered at.

If 20K is an option the next big wonder for that quest is Knights Templar. It has a high cultural value and churns out resource free troops (pikes with attittude) for a fairly long time.

The little library is not needed for its research value right now but for its cultural, but I would be inclined to wait and see if we can pull of the MoM first.

I agree. Though I'd like to win by "whackage" leaving 20k open makes a lot of sense.

Let's get MoM and work from there.

Does this mean that you did call it a set? Or are you going for 10 turns?
 I'm sorry - I did mean to call that a set... I posted the save (didn't I?) and opened up the discussion on MoM. It just seemed like a logical point to hand off the game, since there was a decision that needed team input.

Edit: Yes, the save is there at the end of the turnlog.
