What approach do you consider the more childish?

Approach 1) If you don't give me the source code, I'll won't be your friend anymore. I'll sulk. And I'll hold my breath until I become blue. Oh, and I won't buy your next game.

Approach 2) Trying to propose a business plan with analysis of cost / benefits?
Spoiler :
Ok, it's a very raw analysis...

I don't consider it childish to draw the line and say, "enough is enough"! The point is that it's a statement, forcing the other party into talks. With the other proposed method, one is completely at the mercy of the other party, and must cede if said party decides to reject the proposal. But hey, if you feel that after all these years of failed talks with Take 2 that you will ALL OF A SUDDEN be able to strike up talks reaping positive results, by all means, don't let me hold you from it. I'm just saying that more of the same will lead no where.

Give me a week or two - I have a card up my sleeve. Granted, it might be a deuce, but it might also be an ace.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to say I'm not up for any ideas you guys have! If you have something that could give us an advantage during talks with Take 2, I am more than willing to offer my full support. I just figured we were going to try old tactics and expect different outcomes for some reason.

*Waiting with baited breath!*

There is another important point. If I manage to get someone interested at Take2, i.e. if I find the right way to present my points, I think we can move forward with a relatively small people actually involved, and it seems to me a reasonnable goal.
Although when I see the huge crowd of people volunteering to help me with my game, I sometimes have a little doubt.

However, a boycott campaign can work only with a LARGE community support, and vocal enough so it is known why the sale are decreasing. I strongly doubt we can achieve that.

A boycott would take a lot of people interested in the cause in order to be effective. While it is an interesting idea, I do not see it as realistic without huge support.

I agree with Steph and BadKharma - let's face it, less than 50 people have voted in this poll. Even multiplying that number by 4 (silent supporters) and we're not even a blip on their sales charts. Besides, a priori, we've all already purchased Civ 3 ...

Best,

Oz

Fine, fine, fine...alright already, I get it, I'm getting back to work on my units! ;)

But I still say we won't be getting anywhere soon. Whether a boycott is a better course of action, I will not debate anymore. I just hope you guys truly have that ace up your sleeve... :mischief:

I'd rather use another ace: "look at Steph's game. It will be so good when it's released noone will buy any more strategy game from 2K!"

but if you let him work on CivIII, he'll be busy for a few months, and that's as much head start won.

Unless the designers of this game are planning to go back and rework this game and then market it under a new name, I cant see why they would not release the program code.
Because they fear a fixed Civ3 would canabalize Civ4+ sales.

Ozy,

I very much support your efforts in this even though I think Steph is right and there is no API. But, since none of us know for sure (not having seen the code or being told by an authoritative source) I see this as a no harm effort. At worst it will change nothing. At best it will illustrate our strong desire to have an update to Civ3 by ourselves or others... and who knows maybe it will go somewhere.

Ah, but when will Steph's brilliant effort be ready for prime time? :mischief:

Hi Steph, am I right in thinking you are making your own version of CIVIII from the ground up?!?!

You are right in that I'm making a game from the ground up.

You are wrong in that it's not my own version of CivIII. It will be much better, with many more options and moddability. At least it is so in the blue prints.

I couldn't resist to post a few old screenies. I'm currently in an active working phase, so I hope to have new ones in a few weeks?

May I be the first to propose... murder?

Steph ...

As I have no idea as to how far you are along in design of base code, am not sure if you'd be interested in looking at another game dev system, but just saw an article on bluesnews.com that the Europa code is being made available for 'free' (some restrictions as they want to make sure you are a developer and are gonna make a game, etc.). This is what was used for Europa Universalis II and some other games. Just in case want to take a look

Europa is not the same scale, it's RTS, and it's a very different game, so I doubt it would be very useful, although it can be quite interesting

Everyone kindly metaphorically keep holding your breath. At the beginning of this week, I spoke to the assistant of and emailed someone very senior at TakeTwo. Experience tells me that a week of silence = "No news is good news". In the unhappy eventuality that next week goes by without any response, then, frankly, I'll assume the worst and report accordingly.

All The Best,

Oz

No debate there .. i just didn't know if had seen the offer and as not sure what stage you were in your code if could use something there. I know hearts of iron was rts, but EU2??? been so long i can't honestly recall at this point ... heck i'm lucky these days to recall the bottle of wine drank 2 days ago (oh yeah was a 96 Haut Brion ... one of my favs).
