BTW, I'm pretty straight edge (I even wear the X's sometimes when I'm bored) except for the whole "can't take Tylenol" crap. That's a bunch of bull and I can't stand it, because this friend of mine always goes: "You're not straight-edge, you take Tylenol." That's just stupid.

I think that addiction has more to do with the person than the substance. I'm not trying to put anyone down, but some personalities are more suseptable to addiction. Although I know that substances can very easily conquer strong personalaties just the same (I've seen it happen). I don't know how to spell that out in proper psycho babble, but I believe it to be true. For instance, I've been involved in circles of people doing hard drugs & less than half of us were addicted. Those that were, almost always seemed to be weak minded to begin with. I guess that I was lucky, in that I could go & have my fun, and leave it at that. And not be out on the hunt for more, or stealing sh*t at 3 in the morning so I could score another fix.

I'm not perfect though, I was a pretty hardcore drunk for a few years, but luckily I got over that. And I can't seem to kick the tobacco habit. Other than that it's like I said, as far as the hard stuff goes I was able to take it or leave it (although I took it more than I left it)...lol.

I never said that they weren't. Certain personality types are more susceptible to addiction than others, was the point that I made. I've read that before (although I don't have any bibliography), and I've seen it. In fact I've had friends that I've done drugs with (the same quantity & number of occasions) & I've never had a "hard drug" habit escape my control, while I've seen it happen to some of those that I was partying with all of the time.

Well said, gjts00! I've always felt that, while many substances do have addictive qualities, most actual addictions owe more to the weaknesses of the addicts than to the nature of the substances. In my experience, very few people will allow themselves to believe that, even partially.

I think that's a shame too Loaf...I mean, think of how many people someone could help get through an addiction if they could just make the addict realize that.
