Adventures of the Vietnamese (II)

60 years into the war with the Vietnamese, Japan's distinctive red color has been erased from the mini map. Tokyo fell in 1090, right after the declaration of Dinh Tien Hoang (having the cultural advantage was very very handy ;)). The city of Edo became ours the following turn. Meanwhile, we failed with the lightning attempt with three knights on Kyoto. Two archers were killed, but the only spearman was able to hold his ground. Between turns, a Japanese wandering swordsman got back to the capital, and an axeman appeared there as well, so we couldn't finish it. But anyway, Osaka was razed in 1110 after being bombarded to 12%. This city was settled one tile nearer to the desert and also farther to the river, so despite of it having Confucianism spreaded, Dinh Tien Hoang decided to burn everything to the ground and let a new city to be founded on a better spot. This year saw the destruction of a brand new Japanese city as well. Its name was... err... hmm ok we can't remember it – the appearance was too short to be memorized  Roughly described, it was settled down next to our swordsman in the south with two defenders, so naturally he took it as a chance to practice some raiding techniques. It actually cost him two turns and most of his hit points to destroy the city. Finally, ten years later, Dinh Tien Hoang entered the streets of Kyoto, revealing one of the last places on the map we haven't know of :king: Now the Japan civilization has been wip... – oh wait:

Bah, so Toky has evacuated into Satsuma – the famous 1 pop 1 tile capital we forgot to take :crazyeye: Come on, get out and grab our Great prophet as a revenge! Or the worker is ok, whatever :p No? Then meet our longbows, and goodbye, Tokugawa. Next time, try to be nicer to us, and you may get a better place than this hole...

I wonder who you will attack next.

Good question Hoplite, good question indeed :D

I know what you all are thinking of... but don't be so sure, for Dinh Tien Hoang will stop his campaigns here. Alex is a friend of his, since they share the same love for war.
Ok ok, just kidding :joke: I'll satisfy you all then ;)

During the war with Tokugawa, Dinh Tien Hoang has grown more and more annoyed toward Alexander because he kept refusing our suggestion to invade his Japanese neighbor, although they have separated their path into two different faiths centuries ago. But that's not the only case, in fact the Greek leader also declined to help the Vietnamese in four previous wars against the Arabian, Malinese, American and Malinese (again), all of whom he quite hated at the time  Inevitably, Dinh Tien Hoang had to come to a conclusion that this guy is really plotting something against us :scan: A world cannot hold two warmongers, and one of them must die sooner or later  That's why our troops are now exploring the Greek land:

Well, to be honest, every tile out there was revealed dozens of turns before. However, there's still a small fraction of the map that is unreachable to the Vietnamese – did you notice those four fogged tiles on top? In a Raging barbs world like this, it's possible for that piece of land to be already occupied by some savage guys. Will be pretty interesting when I finally open the Worldbuilder after this game ends to see, but my bet for this is yes, there'll be at least a barb warrior patrolling those tiles for 3000 years
Back to Alex's land, there's a total of six cities, and another settler waiting for a good spot. Among them, Athens is of course the most difficult to beat, with hills, a river and some phalanxes protecting. All the other settlements are not that tough, and can be approached within two turns. That's why our army is being divided into many parts. Oh, and can you see our legendary Son Tinh the scout? He's out there, too, for this final push... (acting maybe as a bait then ;))

As the Greek war carries on, our cities have finally dominated the top five greatest settlements of the world for the first time:

Before this, Athens has occupied a place on the list since 4000BC! Now it is Chen Ni the illustrious pink spot being the number one :) With four wonders and at least two more on the way, no wonder this city is one of the key elements in the Vietnamese's success. It's also the biggest triumph of Dinh Tien Hoang so far. Chen Ni has contributed to our empire with one culture for each city, a free tech of Machinery and one happiness! However, due to its position near the battlefield, Chen Ni is suffering from serious unhappiness, whereas all our other cities aren't. The second place is of course reserved for Hanoi, the Vietnamese great capital with marvelous resource concentration, a river, towns and a Great library. That's not taking into account the fact that Hanoi had to share, or even give, some of its valuable tiles to other weaker surrounding cities. On the contrary, Namdinh, which is founded in 940AD, makes an unexpected appearance in this list thanks to an enormous amount of culture a great artist has granted to (by the way, what does the game use to rate cities? My wild guess is that it is based on culture – which city produces the highest culture in 2050 at the current rate will make it into the list. Anyone knows about this?) Number four is somewhat another surprise. Mecca, the Arabian no-food-lack-production capital has done very well :goodjob: Not only its cottages are now matured, the Mahabohdi also makes this city our best gold hub. The fifth place is used to celebrate Hồ Chí Minh and the city under his name. Without direct access to a river and a lack of decent hammers, by swapping tiles with its brother city Hanoi and an extensive use of the whip, Hochiminh city has grown into a big power of the world...

It's 1250AD. Nearly everything has gone according to plan. Dinh Tien Hoang has both razed and captured all but one of Alexander's cities. Saxon and Delphi fell in the first moments of war. Ten years later, it's Sparta and Thermopylae sharing the same fate. Athens people surrendered to our mighty army in 1230. And the Vietnamese troops are now surrounding the new Greek capital of Corinth, far on the top left of the world:

By Dinh Tien Hoang's calculations, this city should not be the last one standing. Surprisingly, the defending units here, which consists of a longbowman and a phalanx, managed to withhold our striking force of five knights. The next turn, our last knight killed the last wounded longbow, but by that time Corinth has produced a catapult, and thus the city didn't fall. Eventually, it whipped one more longbowman and received another from Athens, further delaying our progress. However, one city's consolidation is also another's weakening. It's Athens itself which had to suffer from the decision of Alexander the military genius. The Greek then-capital's defense was reduced to only two longbows, and Dinh Tien Hoang grabbed the chance by ordering his knights to attack despite the 60% cultural bonus. And our leader was once again proved correct. Alex had to evacuate to his hole in the corner of the map :)
Between turns, the Greek leader attempted to make a sortie using his sole cat. No chance :mischief: Now that his military campaign is having to race with his empire's domination speed, Dinh Tien Hoang launches his final assault on the opponent's last citadel.
Alexander is killed in action (though, which action it is, we still have to study some more :p). Dinh Tien Hoang is now the only leader of the world! :king:

So, this is the end of the Vietnamese's second adventure :king: Throughout the history, Dinh Tien Hoang has led a life full of battles. Once started his first war, our leader has never rested for more than 400 years. One of the key to success, we have to admit, is the fact our capital Hanoi is blessed in a resourceful place that surpasses most of other ones, and even rivals Washington city :goodjob: Being boxed in the south east corner has its own advantage: we faced much less barbarian activities than the AI. Dinh Tien Hoang balanced the need for expansion land by aggressive moves, and Saladin was his first victim. Displaying a poor performance and neighboring Vietnam, the Arabians were swept out of the map in the BC years. Right after that our leader switched his focus on Mansa Musa: half of his empire was annexed for grabbing our pink spot. Also the capture of Chen Ni is one of the big milestones that changed the future outcome of the world – from then on the Vietnamese just kept growing more and more powerful. Unfortunately (for the American leader, of course), Washington didn't seem to be able to see it ;), and had to pay for his mistake of stealing three wonder from us. The American war was truly Dinh Tien Hoang's most difficult campaign: he could only advance to cities one by one, since Washington also had a decent force due to his ridiculously powerful capital in term of hammers. After that, our leader operated three all-out, multiple-front wars against the Malinese for the second time, the Japanese and finally Alexander. Of course all of them were quick and big successes, because they're all planned by a brilliant warmonger :p
Before Dinh Tien Hoang saying his goodbye, as a tradition it'll be a bonus for you all. Remember the unrevealed tiles? I did access the WB after the game, and here's what I found:

:) Our adventure #3 will be out some time soon :D

Poor warrior. Standing on the same time for centuries
Congratulation on killing everyone of, and you did it quite fast on top of that.

Yeah he is suffering from obesity, I think :)
The all-land map partly help us in the quick conquest. And you know, it's the snowball effect also. As we're bigger & bigger, the battles become faster & faster! ;)

Next game I wanna see you sweat :trouble:

Ok more difficult next time :) Also I'll try something completely new to me, so it'll be quite a challenge, I guess :mischief:

Nice game 12tn2. WP.
