Emporer level, normal speed, continents, standard.

I just finished conquest of my neighbor, Gandhi, and now I have a solid empire of 13 cities. I have a fairly small army because of my recent conquest, but I have excellent production capability and a good economy. I can run 70% without deficit and I have plenty of towns. My tech level is grenadiers and cannons. I'm #3 in score.

My problem is Qin who I now border. He is #1 in score, and I was dismayed to look at one of his towns recently and find SAM Infantry and Artillery! He's always been ahead of me in tech but apparently he beelined to rocketry. His border city to me has a ... size stack. I was planning to attack him next for obvious reasons, but now it may be impossible. I assume if I turtle and build Qin will crush me in the sapce race.

My option other than attacking Qin would be to attack Napolean who also sort of borders me. He is even in tech with me and has a moderate amount of land for me to eat, though it would spread my empire out a lot.

So should I just mass produce cannons, sell out on Qin and hope to beat the odds? Or try to take Napolean, hope Qin doesn't attack me when I'm weak, and then try to take Qin later with a bigger empire and Panzers. I suppose I could turtle and beeline for Panzers too, but given how far he already is ahead he may have Modern tanks by then.

I thought I would win easily, but now I may have no chance. I guess the way to win this game would have been to finish Gandhi much earlier.

I think that if you attack Napolean, Qin will engage you broadside when your about half way through your invasion. Your main troops will have to return to defend, and Napolean will recover and become best buds with Qin. In the mean time, it will be the English (who you didn't know was in the game) running an OCC strat and win by culture two turns before Qin completes the ss.

Can't you try to get Napoleon to attack Qin, so that you can take advantage of it?

Can you post a picture of the diplomacy relationships within the game? There also might be a cultural victory for you if you have been develeoping any culture in the top three cities (what is the year?). Have you ever tried a diplomacy victory? -Or- as Arcan stated just get them to fight amongst themselves. Qin is usually good about fighting other nations if given technologies while they fight.
Beeline for composites tech and build some modern armor while they get to it, then when the time is right join forces with a defensive pac with Qin while you get the United Nations wonder and force him to vote with his large empire and yours you should be a shoe-in for Diplomacy vote. Good luck!

Napolean and Qin were pleased with each other, Napolean didn't like me enough to do anything, and I had nothing to offer Qin.

My question became moot pretty soon anyway, as Qin declared on Isabella and then Napolean declared on me. Napolean came with 2 waves of about 25 calvary/riflemen each and I lost basically my entire army killing them. It doesn't look good.

I would try and disrupt Qin. Build lots of cavalry and pillage his mines. Build an army of spies if you have the cash and disrupt his (spaceship) production. When the time is right, swamp him with panzers. Bribe napoleon to try and help in the war, that would give him something to do other than build a spaceship. I find this Qin situation a lot on deity, except they have infantry when I have knights :)

In general, I make it a personal policy to make sure any Financial civ is fighting wars from as soon as I can start making it happen til I either own their territory or the end of the game, whichever comes first. :hammer: The Financial trait dovetails a little too nicely with what the AI is good at, especially on levels where they get significant bonuses. (Building cottages, space victory.) The best is where you can get one of the psychotic civs involved in longterm fighting with them. Monty vs Qin, Temujin vs Mansa, etc. I've found I almost always find myself in the situation you described if I leave them alone. My .02.
